Real life knights and real life wandering lawmen were rarely, if ever, like as we romanticized them to be. Most knights, vassals to a lord, were more often petty tyrants over their fiefs. Most wandering lawmen were little better than the desperados they brought in. Yet still the romance moves me. I think it is not that any real knight of Merrie England or lawman of the Old West were truly like Shining Knight or Vigilante. I suspect none truly were. But in a thousand small and hundreds of big ways, the "little" people had the courage we ascribe to these larger than life figures. It is in everyones power to be that brave. To have that much integrity. To "die as befits a knight". I suspect human beings tell stories of great heroes and vile monsters because they cannot believe they are capable of embodying these heights and depths. Yet throughout history, we have in countless cultures. One person cannot overthrow a tyrant, but one person nevertheless trying to do so can inspire the rest to join them. And no magic armor and winged steed is needed to do that.
