I kinda love how the game ping pongs between a plastic neon aesthetic and environments that'd look normal in silent hill 3. Weirdly, it doesnt seem to whiplash. This game seems to be what you'd call "extremely gay (non-pejorative)" and I don't think I have to explain why, but I do think it's worth mentioning that amongst the analytical parts of the communities that'd appreciate it, it's very common to pose the argument that horror as a genre (specially in film and games) is often very strongly associated with queerness. This happens because, be it either due to societal marginalization or due to the extreme (and often body-related) experiences discovering such identities and orientations tend to bring, horror tends to present metaphors that strongly associate with the life experience of queer people, as well as a space for transgression that permits expressing them.

That point about feeling like you are intruding on the main character's choices is a great one. Sometimes it feels like any character with a story worth engaging with deserves to have their own fleshed out narrative, or at least options limited to what the character seems like they would actually do.

As one who played for many years over many many games. It released recently and it's got so much to it. and even now. I could not have beaten the game. It's extremely hard even in the first 10 levels. It's so skill based and knowledge based you have to go through atleast 100 tries before you know what's best from scratch. even then it's insane. So many times have i gotten to around level 20 in somewhat progressed through main quest only to get completely destroyed by some enemy with god like powers. This was all through playing permadeath. i never do checkpoints.

See, now I'm of the mind that the timed segments WERE the natural evolution of the game. To me, Lorn's Lure is a precision platformer first and foremost. The atmosphere was the butter on top of the bread. But that bread, that surprisingly deep and sophisticated loaf, I saw it as a visionary example of the relationship between a character's moveset and level design, in same the way that Mario had with his levels in 64 for the first time. Lorn's Lore feels like a step forward for a sub-genre that doesn't exist, perhaps only yet. It's a first person platformer that accounts for your every step, dash, cling and grapple with a level that knows how you want to traverse it and still makes it difficult and questionable. It is the question of "how do I get there?" but presented in such a wholly interesting, challenging, confusing yet well designed manner that teaches how you to think in this space. How to get good at climbing and descending this cold and harsh world. I thought I was being challenged at every step, and each timed segment only made it more apparent. It was the crescendo to my quest for movement. I'm glad that it recently did get an explore mode though, for those who needed to take the chill pill before taking on the real and genuinely brilliant challenge the game presents to all platforming aficionados.

just wanted to push back on some of these points with my own thoughts because i feel like some of them are a little flawed I think the point of the game is that it's very nostalgia-ridden and gives off this cheesy comic book style look. i dont think the characters have to be super deep or have amazing design to have a good roguelike game. I also find it kind of misleading that you're arguing 90% of the game is what looks like a really early fight with none of the synergies the game offers. I don't have the game, I don't plan to purchase it, and I get this is an opinion piece, but this criticism is a bit too harsh for a review that isn't very in-depth. Also, from what I've gathered, mino games pulled out of web3 integration june of 2024. Is that too late? Should they have never done it in the first place? I don't know, the only things I know about crypto come from Coffeezilla. Based on your wording I assume you already know this, I just wanted to point it out because a lot of the sponsored videos were made in september-october.
@bench0_27 күн бұрын
@@funderscoretoast3220 thanks for you input! I did not know they pulled out of web3 early this year, I will edit my comment accordingly, although I find their willingness to participate in crypto gaming a red flag regardless of a change of heart it is a respectable thing for them to change their minds and still release the game outside of crypto involvement. I agree that my opinion may be overly scathing without having sunk more hours into the game but how I generally approach these reviews are I usually play the game for about 2 or 3 hours and if I enjoy it enough I will play it longer and ultimately write a more in depth review. A personal opinion of mine that I have about games is they should hook you in the beginning and you shouldn't have to wait past the 3 hour refund period to actually start enjoying it, what hooks a player is different with each person and if the art direction and style of the game is what does it for you then that's great! I however, prefer to judge a game off how it plays mechanically right away and generally can only name a few edge cases that the graphics were my primary draw. although there are synergies and mechanics that reveal themselves later in the game, the early game should still be entertaining enough for me to want to continue and in this case it wasn't, paired with their marketing relying on the visual "90s saturday morning cartoon nostalgia style" and collection aspect, with the only gameplay being shown being boss fights I felt their priorities were in presentation not gameplay, which I found to be true in the hours I played it. I also don't agree with their business practice, in my experience, if a game design company's website is catered towards the financial success of their company and pure analytical data of their games, it tells me their priority is profit and convincing investors that they will be lucrative and although every game dev wants to he financially successful I imagine, I believe their first priority should be making a game worth playing not a game worth SELLING. Ultimately I'n glad they opted out of web3 involvement but that was 100% a profit driven incentive to do web3 to begin with but I also believe opting out was also a profit incentive, because of the many cases of crypto killing a project, they were just wise enough to realize it was a financial mistake. I hope this clarifies things a little more, at the end of the day I just want people to actively enjoy what they're playing and not settle for something that is merely passable. If you find true enjoyment from Dimensionals then that's the best I could hope for, but I personally think that we live in a time of great excess and owe it to ourselves to find games that exceed our expectations.
@funderscoretoast322027 күн бұрын
@@bench0_ Hey, thanks for responding the way you did! The review felt a little mean-spirited but this is the first video I've watched from you so I don't really have a good understanding of how your reviews tend to work. I agree with the sentiment that while you could have put many more hours and gone much more in-depth, that isn't necessarily isn't a requirement to share your thoughts on a game. I think that would be pretty unreasonable. I actually thought you already knew that Dimensionals had already pulled out of web3 integration, and even then I'm glad you pointed this out. The fact that a company would consider it is something to be concerned about. It's a valid criticism. I think if anything, you should've done more to note that there's nothing wrong with supporting Dimensionals, or at the very least enjoying Dimensionals. It seems like a cool game, and while there are issues surrounding it there definitely pressing, i think Dimensionals has found its niche. The way you're approaching this in the reply section feels very nuanced in comparison to the actual video, if that makes sense. Have a good day!

3:07 One of my beliefs about creativity is that when creating any work of art, a creator needs to have the creativity to make something interesting, the skills to make something good, and the courage to make something bad. That's what gets people new experiences within the media we consume, and even if the media turns out to be bad people can still fall in love with it for the potential the idea has and the respect for the creative risks the artist took. I feel like this moment encapsulates that idea very well in a more interesting way I ever could. 4:42 I completely agree with this idea that you need to have a game that either has amazing gameplay or immaculate charm in order to be memorable, but in my experience some of the best games I have ever played have a mix of both, with Slay the Spire being one of the few exceptions among my favorite games (it has extraordinary gameplay with only a bit of charm when other comparatively good turn-based roguelikes I've played like Monster Train and Brutal Orchestra are really good in both categories).

I'm sorry.. reality doesn't adhere to your preconceived notions of "creativity". If someone wants to do something, they just can.. and if they do, there's nothing you can do to take that away from it. Some things just exist because..

@@Big_Dai I did say it was a belief of mine, not a hard fact. You have the right to disagree with me on that though, and that's ok. I will say that my belief on creativity reflects the end-of-year videos Yahtzee (of Second Wind) does on the best, worst, and blandest games of the year (where Yahtzee describes a bland game as being worse than a bad one specifically because a bland game has no use within the medium while a bad game can be so fascinating in a way that you ponder how it could be so bad), and also offers a partial explanation on the definition of a cult classic (they usually don't reach mainstream appeal, but they have a strong enough niche that they appeal to a very specific type of person).
