what if you scribed 4x4 posts instead of the legs? that way the vertical force would be downward on the wood, not on the screws. just another though. alternatively half lap style joints, although it'd be hard to cut right. thanks for this video.

@GorillaSheds 4 ай бұрын
The legs aren't just screwed, they are also glued. They go right up, tight to the underneath of the flooring. There's nothing wrong with notching a 4x4 post to accept the 4x2, but I don't think theres any real benefit. Thanks for watching.

Nice shed that's good using screw base never seen before shed firms I've worked for use 2x2 slabs keep up the good work simon from Worcester
@GorillaSheds
@GorillaSheds 8 ай бұрын
A lot of firms do that, but unless the slabs are bedded properly then they'll shift. It used to be commonplace that sheds would have a good,. stiff floor frame that helped prevent the shed from settling unevenly and help withstand any movement in the slabs. The slabs would provide airspace under the shed and help prevent rotting and give good airflow under the shed. That method is still widely adhered to in the USA Then, to save money, manufacturers (including us) went over to using ventilated floors with the floor joists running the opposing direction to the floor boards. This style of floor demands a solid base, either concrete or well bedded slabs. The problem is that the shed will sit directly onto the concrete which, when it rains, will allow the rainwater to flow under the shed and rot the floor timbers. The groundscrew system gives the same benefits as the old way of doing this: keeping the timbers off the floor and promoting airflow. They also have the benefit of going down into the subsoil which makes them incredibly stable, and being able to easily cope with sloping ground. Plus they're quick! Plus, they are clean to install and instantly loadable as well, so no waiting for concrete to dry. The biggest benefit on sloped ground is that they work out massively cheaper than having a concrete base laid that is 100mm thick one end and 1m thick the other end!

@GorillaSheds
@GorillaSheds 8 ай бұрын
They absolutely are! We check the British Geological Survey database for the area the shed is to go and use an appropriate length groundscrew for the area we're going to be working in. If we need to use a longer groundscrew than standard, we will. We've conducted pull tests on groundscrews that have been put into the ground to a depth of 700mm. In the south of the U.K. where we typically work, the frost depth is 200 mm, as is the depth of topsoil. The subsoil is typically clay or loam, but in some areas it can be chalk which is even better! We're working with around 500mm of the groundscrew going into the subsoil. At that depth, each groundscrew will typically take around 500kg in weight in clay soil (that being the predominant type) but even if each one was to take only 200kg, and using a maximum spacing of 1.2m between groundscrews, that would give a load of around 555kg per square meter. There's not many sheds that need a load bearing ability that high. On this job we used 20 groundscrews. across the front the spacing was approx. 1.2m on centre, front to back they were 0.75m on centre. Using 200kg per groundscrew as a guideline minimum, that would give an overall estimated minimum load of 4,000kg If required, we can perform pull tests to ascertain the load bearing capabilities of the soil in any area for the size of groundscrew tested. We can install groundscrews from 800mm x 68mm right up to 2.0m x 76mm - those bigger ones can take over 6 tonnes each!

@@dord1954 The way we word it, just to cover ourselves, is that we install the sheds free of charge at the time of delivery providing that there is good access and a suitable base. The reason we put it like that is because we arrive at the clients address fully equipped and prepared to install the sheds. If we can't get the shed into the garden, or if the base just isn't suitable, then we can't put the shed up. If that happens, we don't offer a discount as we still have to pay our installation team for their day of work regardles of whether they just deliver the shed or whether they deliver and install it. In the last 5 years I don't think we have left any customer high and dry. I wish my soil was better for these - it's hard compact rocky clay soil. I'll just use 2 20' skids for mine - same exact shed design as what you guys did in this video.
@GorillaSheds
@GorillaSheds 8 ай бұрын
Hi Michael, if you can email us your postcode then I can take a look at the geology for your area. I very much doubt that 2 @ 20' skids would provide the necessary support for the floor of a shed this size, although you may have a cunning plan that would achieve that! If you envisage using the same size floor frame that has been used in this video (4x2 treated) then the maximum distance between load points is a smidge over 1.5m (59") but we would advise that you keep it to 1.2m (47") or thereabouts. With 2 @ 20' skids you would need the floor to comprise of 2 stringers at 20' long, which would be used to tie together 16 10'floor joists spaced at 16" on centre. These could be cantilevered over the 2 skids, but even with the two skids being placed at the maximum of 59", it would still leave 30" cantilevered each side of the skids. Whilst that would probably do the job, it would be considered excessive. If the same floor design were to be placed on 3 @ 20' skids, the floor could be supported at 47" centres with 1' of cantilevered timber each side. A much more stable design..
@michael.phelps
@michael.phelps 8 ай бұрын
Hey! Thank you for the thorough response, I'm located in Minnesota with very poor draining soil conditions. It seems like the 20' skid route will not work, especially since I just got approval to make the shed 2 stories tall, so there will be a larger weight than the design above. My other idea was to use deck blocks (4 on each long side, and one each short side, none in the middle since I won't be able to adjust the height of those if they sink) along the perimeter, and have 16 2x8x10 joists with 2 double (sister'd?) 2x8x20 boards on each edge. This method is also cheaper than buying the 3 20' skids, and I would dig a foot below each block and place compacted rocks under. Would that work?@@GorillaSheds

However, they won't stop a determined thief, if they want to get in then they will.

Like the shed, especially the relieved eaves detail & 4”x2” ridge, but that ecobase looks a bit dodgy without the usual gravel filling inbetween the plastic grid & with plastic sheet below.

A shed will always rot from the floor upwards as when it rains, the rainwater sits against the timber. When wood is under pressure it takes on water a lot easier so the floor timbers rot first. By using the ecobase it doesn't just create a damp barrier but also lifts the floor off of the base and promotes airflow around the floor joists. It prolongs the life of the shed. If the ecobase is being laid directly onto soil then you're right, there should be a semi-permeable membrane (definitely NOT plastic sheet) under it and the tiles should be filled with gravel. We also advise that when an ecotile base is used you should also put down a sturdy floor frame to tie it all together properly.
