In addition to using the word "cordage" far too much 😅, the guidelines are cinched down far too tight. It puts undue pressure on the tarp to have the guidelines cinched down so tight. It's better, and this is effective, if you keep it a little bit looser so there's some give to the tarp when the wind blows or to put a loop of send elastic cord at each of the d rings and tie off to that

I have osteoporosis of the spine, I find that these lightweight packs don’t agree with my back, not enough support. Someone told me to try a traditional pack with a full suspension system,they leant me their older gregory pack before a 4 day hike I was planning. Well, my back really agreed with the pack, I barely felt it on my back, a night and day difference. So I bought myself a Gregory and I love it! It’s a good thing that my base weight is only 13lbs, but like I said, I barely feel that pack on my back.

Looking to do this as my first solo backpacking trip ever and with my dogs and was going to have triple a tow my truck to the Ohiopyle area. Any tips where to have it towed or think it may be a bad idea? Only thing I'm really worried about is someone messing with the vehicle since it'll be there a few days. Probably just overthinking though.

Hear me out even better looking is the frogtogs poncho. But keeps the backpack from getting wet at same time. Plenty of ventilation when it raining but hot. And you can ditch the weight of a backpack rain cover.
@Bacon_N_Backpacking2 ай бұрын
I have their poncho as well. I agree a poncho is probably the best way to stay mostly dry in rain that lasts for hours at a time. Ponchos are more ventilated and you won’t wet out from the inside with sweat like you would a rain jacket. Downsides are that they’re a pain in the wind, get snagged more easily, can be hard to throw on over your pack if you’re solo and don’t cover your forearms or shins. They’re also not as good as a wind breaker garment compared to rain jacket and pants. Everything is a trade off. The benefit of it acting as a pack cover doesn’t really matter to me since all of my packs are mostly waterproof. Combined with a good pack liner I’ve never had items in my pack get wet that weren’t supposed to, but I get your point.

Yeah, hit up the triple crown loop in my backyard of Roanoke, Va. Id like to see a play by play on one of my checklist hikes. I hear it has some challenging water management issues as well as crossing through private lands in certain regions that might make it difficult to find campsites. There are a few videos on it but oddly people only mention the tough logistics and never really explain in detail where they are and how they worked around them. Might be a fun one.

My wife and I ran into a hiker when we were just beginning Rocky Ridge and we asked him how far it goes on this way, he said "It's almost over for you already". It went on seemingly forever after that encounter. It's a tacit rule out there to always provide accurate advice, don't be that prick.
@Bacon_N_Backpacking2 ай бұрын
I mean that’s a subjective statement. Rocky Ridge is probably about 1-1.5 miles of the bad rocky stretch. That whole section takes maybe 20-30 minutes. A lot of backpackers hike 12-14 hours per day so 20-30 minutes would be a relative blip in the day. I can see it from both sides.

Can’t beat that, Mr Durston beat me to it lol. In all honestly the set up didn’t cross my mind because it’s very easy. You basically just stake out the floor, unzip the fly, put the pole in and stand it up. Only thing left to do is stake out the vestibule and any additional guyouts you desire. It’s very simple.

If you look online at most backpacking groups they seem to be universally loved. Thanks for the sub!

Save weight with the dynema floor, add weight with the footprint... Are you still saving weight, even with the footprint over the woven bathtub floor?
@Bacon_N_Backpacking2 ай бұрын
That’s a personal decision. The footprint for the 2+ is 5 oz. You save about 3 oz with the dyneema floor, so you’d still be 2 oz heavier with dyneema floor + footprint over woven floor with no footprint. There are two trains of thought: 1. I spent big money on an ultralight shelter so I want it as light as possible (21 oz) 2. I spent big money and don’t want to tear a hole in it so I’m getting a woven floor and footprint (28 oz) I’m not going to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do, totally up to the individual. It’s Sara’s tent and she preferred to get the footprint.
@rungavagairun2 ай бұрын
@@Bacon_N_Backpacking I bought my X-mid pro 2 before there was an option for the dyneema floor. The poly floor feels super thin, and I did get worried when using it that I was going to end up with a puncture or tear, but I never did. I wasn't saying what you're doing is wrong. I was just curious about the tradeoffs. And different terrain may require different considerations. I've switched over to a hammock setup now. No floor! :)
@Bacon_N_Backpacking2 ай бұрын
@@rungavagairun Yeah it’s personal preference honestly. If you don’t abuse it, the floor SHOULD be fine. I’ve never actually broken a single ultralight gear item over the years, but it’s Sara’s tent and she decided to go with the footprint. I just tell people it’s up to them to decide.

It’s a complete non issue if the weather is calm. We spent a full week on the Uinta Highline Trail in Utah AFTER I shot this video. In the right (wrong may be more appropriate) conditions, sleeping on the low side can be annoying. For example, wind blowing in from behind your head pushes the tent fly down towards your face. The inside of the fly has light condensation on it and as a result you get little sprinkles of water smacking you in the face. Also, the fly is like 4-5” from your face with the rain hammering off the dyneema. Again, only had that happen 1/7 nights and it didn’t affect my sleep but I could see how it could be annoying. All in all I’d still highly recommend the tent.
