One thing I have found useful is a gear sling to store gear off the ground hung under the hammock. Helpful if you are in heavy rain and a “stream” forms under your hammock.

Nice video. I use shock cord loops on the tarp tie out points tied to the regular tie out cords. The loops give it some “give” in strong winds and helps with tension on the tarp in rain (especially if you have a sil nylon tarp that stretches in rain).
@Bacon_N_Backpacking4 күн бұрын
I use shock cord for my dyneema tarp. Thinking about getting rid of it though. Most people these days are saying it makes no difference. I’m still undecided.
@lt22464 күн бұрын
@ I think it mainly makes a difference if you are in some pretty strong winds. On the other hand I have not heard of any downside to using shock cord.

WV has always been a special place for me. I used to camp in that area decades ago, when I did a lot of caving. I even climbed Seneca Rocks. I haven't been caving or climbing in years, but I still go backpacking, and have taken up cycle touring. I love the outdoors. At the time I was living in Baltimore County. Even away from the City, the light pollution didn't let you get a really good view of the night sky. I distinctly remember a night near Spruce Knob, where I first saw the full glory of the Milky Way. The stars were so thick, that it was obvious where the name came from.
@Bacon_N_Backpacking4 күн бұрын
Yeah I typically take pictures of the Milky Way when I’m at Dolly Sods. The smartphone cameras are so good now you can capture it on a phone.

This was my first backpacking trip, back in 1974. Back then, it was a designated Primitive Area, not yet an official Wilderness. There are two other similar areas in WV. Cranberry Glades, and I don't remember the name of the other one. The ecosystem is different because it is left over from the Ice Age. These areas are like little islands of Tundra. After hiking all day, we setup our tents, then raced up a steep trail, to get to a beaver pond before sunset. We sat in a huge wild blueberry patch and watched the beavers come out for a swim, and a run along the shore. It was Fall, so we enjoyed the wild blueberries. While doing this, off in the woods, I heard a loud growling sound. I guess a bear wasn't happy that we were in his berry patch. And it deserves the name Sods. The trail went right through a very boggy area.

I envy you for doing it in the 70’s. There are traffic jams on the trails these days, it’s hardly wilderness anymore.

Hey B+B, New to hammocking and I have the exact same setup. I was curious as to how it would handle winter temps. Would love to do the 36 m. loop, but as a former smoker of 45 years, don't think I can do it, maybe do an out and back on the one side over a 3 day span.

In addition to using the word "cordage" far too much 😅, the guidelines are cinched down far too tight. It puts undue pressure on the tarp to have the guidelines cinched down so tight. It's better, and this is effective, if you keep it a little bit looser so there's some give to the tarp when the wind blows or to put a loop of send elastic cord at each of the d rings and tie off to that

I have osteoporosis of the spine, I find that these lightweight packs don’t agree with my back, not enough support. Someone told me to try a traditional pack with a full suspension system,they leant me their older gregory pack before a 4 day hike I was planning. Well, my back really agreed with the pack, I barely felt it on my back, a night and day difference. So I bought myself a Gregory and I love it! It’s a good thing that my base weight is only 13lbs, but like I said, I barely feel that pack on my back.

Hear me out even better looking is the frogtogs poncho. But keeps the backpack from getting wet at same time. Plenty of ventilation when it raining but hot. And you can ditch the weight of a backpack rain cover.
@Bacon_N_Backpacking3 ай бұрын
I have their poncho as well. I agree a poncho is probably the best way to stay mostly dry in rain that lasts for hours at a time. Ponchos are more ventilated and you won’t wet out from the inside with sweat like you would a rain jacket. Downsides are that they’re a pain in the wind, get snagged more easily, can be hard to throw on over your pack if you’re solo and don’t cover your forearms or shins. They’re also not as good as a wind breaker garment compared to rain jacket and pants. Everything is a trade off. The benefit of it acting as a pack cover doesn’t really matter to me since all of my packs are mostly waterproof. Combined with a good pack liner I’ve never had items in my pack get wet that weren’t supposed to, but I get your point.

Yeah, hit up the triple crown loop in my backyard of Roanoke, Va. Id like to see a play by play on one of my checklist hikes. I hear it has some challenging water management issues as well as crossing through private lands in certain regions that might make it difficult to find campsites. There are a few videos on it but oddly people only mention the tough logistics and never really explain in detail where they are and how they worked around them. Might be a fun one.

My wife and I ran into a hiker when we were just beginning Rocky Ridge and we asked him how far it goes on this way, he said "It's almost over for you already". It went on seemingly forever after that encounter. It's a tacit rule out there to always provide accurate advice, don't be that prick.
@Bacon_N_Backpacking3 ай бұрын
I mean that’s a subjective statement. Rocky Ridge is probably about 1-1.5 miles of the bad rocky stretch. That whole section takes maybe 20-30 minutes. A lot of backpackers hike 12-14 hours per day so 20-30 minutes would be a relative blip in the day. I can see it from both sides.
