In commercial minnow harvesting, theres two truths, galvanized and shiny traps will outproduce a black yrap 3:1 even when baited. If it rusts up, hit it with cold galvanizing spray paint in the off season. Rule #2 at least in mn: the best bait is a block of white styrofoam floating on a cord in the center of the trap. in the center

i didnt see a single fish swim sideways and enter the trap. i saw two edits, both times "MO FISH". but never saw a single fish enter the gate.
@ReelTexasOutdoors17 күн бұрын
Im confused by your comment. Is it implying that the fish were placed inside the trap? Ive made one trap to date with horizontal openings, and this is the one in the video. It was an experiment for fun, but it clearly caught the fish. I would use this trap now only in certain situations, for like crawfish. It's not ideal for bait fish.
@RobCardIV19 күн бұрын
instead of using the wire grid with the 1 inch holes going vertically.... turn it 90 degrees so that the half inch holes go vertically.... i mean... maybe a fish might try to swim horizontally to escape but... i dont think so. laymens terms. the walls of your trap have the 1 inch holes on the wire going up and down. why ? fish are tall , not wide. turn the walls so that the wire runs half inch tall holes and 1 inch wide holes. i doubt most 1 inch fish will swim horizontally to escape.
@ReelTexasOutdoors19 күн бұрын
Good idea. However, the traps are cut the way they are to save wire and time cutting/assembling the traps. If I were to cut the wire in a manner that made the mesh run horizontally, I would have to use a ton more wire, make more cuts, and use more time to build one. It's just not efficient to build one this way, unfortunately. However, it's a non issue now as we make traps out of 1/2 x 1/2 heavy gauge wire also.

@ReelTexasOutdoorsАй бұрын
Thanks for the comment, I sincerely appreciate it. To be honest, this is the only trap I have ever built with horizontal openings. I have built thousands of traps with vertical, but I still have this one to date. It’s not very practical for fish, but it isn’t bad for crawfish and other things that crawl up the ramps. Overall, it’s an okay trap, but I would not recommend it for fish exclusively. I have not caught any turtles in it however I don’t typically use it very much either. Either way, thank you again for the comment. I sincerely appreciate you.

do you have a preference for a trap used in creeks and rivers vs lake and ponds?
@ReelTexasOutdoorsАй бұрын
Hi Clayton, my apologies for the slow response. I think it would depend on whether or not you can find some pockets/pools of slow moving water. If so, then I would go with a Z-trap. If you cannot and you have to bait it, then I would say clover. Check out that last short i posted on the channel. That guy was using one of my Z-traps in a creek and caught a ton. Hope this helps man, have a good one.

Hey bud I’d like to know what brand also length your camo aluminum boat is with the Yamaha 150. Also if there is anything you don’t like about it and if you would purchase again? I am looking into getting a boat and like the look of yours. Thank you in advance for your time and keep up with the great content. Thanks
@ReelTexasOutdoors3 ай бұрын
Hi Ross! That boat is a G3 1910, in camp obviously. I do like the boat… I purchased it because I wanted something without carpet that my boys could eat snacks and spill red Gatorade in without it staining. This is super easy to clean out as you simply just wash it off at a car wash. Also like the fact that I can use it for almost any type of fishing, whether catfish or bass fishing. Again, being super easy to clean off is the key for me. The boat rides okay, and top end is around 55 miles an hour. I won’t say it’s an exceptional ride or anything like that, but it gets the job done. Really the only two negative things I have to say about it are the hatches and weight distribution. They did not waterproof the hatches very well at all. When it rains hard water will roll in down the sides and get your rods wet. The center hatch, where all your tackle goes does stay dry, but the side hatches where my rods definitely get wet. Weight is the other issue. If you don’t run lithium ion batteries and upgrade to regular batteries in the back, it will definitely sink the rear of the boat some. I know this is common with a lot of boats, but it seems a little bit bit worse on this lighter aluminum G3. Just be prepared to run lithium ion batteries if you get this boat. Finally, I would be about 60/40 on buying again. I might look into a center consul type rig with a 90 hp before purchasing a sportsman/bass, boat style boat. That’s just my preference though. There’s nothing wrong with this boat at all and if you plan to do a lot of bass fishing out of it, then this is a great boat. Now, I don’t recommend it solely for trotlines, as you saw in the other video though. It is quite too heavy for that, but it can get the job done. I hope this information helps some. Best of luck in whatever decision you make.

Hey there, thank you for the comment and question. Running them between two clumps of concrete blocks is probably more solid thsn tying to a tree. Actually, they will be there a lot longer than that tree will be. We use both, but these lines were all sunk with blocks.

Hey Tom, thanks for the question. These were nuisance beaver and not being trapped for the fur. I’m no expert on the fur trade, but as a general rule of thumb southern fur is a lot less valuable. In Texas, we don’t have a real winter so our critters don’t grow the thick full coats their northern cousins do. Now, southern fur willl still sale, it’s just not as valuable. Have a good one, sir.
