I can save you time and you are not a cheater. Her argument is that to avoid being a cheater you HAVE TO (why?) turn up difficult so that it would require you to grind at a low Rpm (like 50) and therefore fatigue faster, and, therefore go slower (you will reach exhaustion faster) -- BUT who would do that in ANY scenario? Not me, especially b/c I don't need to work that low cadence and I know how to set up a bicycle to spin at my preferred wattage within my preferred cadence (~85 rpm). Actually, it's really smart to gear a bicycle correctly -- virtually or real world -- this is what professionals do -- it's called "SPIN TO WIN". Essentially, the trainer's difficulty is virtual gearing b/c you could do the same with your real bicycle. Have fun people, and don't get sucked into feeling like a "cheater". LOL, it's like an elementary school bully challenging you to a push-up contest -- you have to do the low RPM grind or you aren't doing it right -- NO! Grinding is not fun and only fruitful for specific training like simulated race training where it is unavoidable.

As a 190 lbs 61 year old who's been cycling for years I keep my difficulty level at 50% for the simple reason that I don't like standing up on my bike indoors. I actually wiped out once! When I ride outdoors I stand up on my bike when the hill is above 6% and I alternate if it's a long hill. Where I live that's all there is, either going up or down, very few flat roads. I live in the mountains.Now I ride with quite a few younger cyclists and they have a hard time keeping up with me on the hills. Good for my ego!

Super info, thanks for this, one question you said collagen peptide, was never sure if it really has more benefits than box standard collagen . I have to admit I haven't looked in depth into it but what is the main benefit of using peptide over normal collagen ?
@EverythingIsPhotogenic3 күн бұрын
@@blrun129 Collagen peptides, or hydrolyzed collagen, are much easier for your body to digest and absorb compared to regular collagen. The peptides are already broken down into smaller pieces, so your body doesn’t have to work as hard to process them. This means they’re more bioavailable, letting your body absorb them quickly and use them effectively. That’s a big deal when it comes to supporting things like joint repair, muscle recovery, and bone strength, because the faster your body can absorb the collagen, the faster it can put it to work. Collagen peptides also do more than just provide collagen-they help your body produce more of its own. This can lead to improved joint health, reduced pain, and better support for muscle recovery, especially if you’re active or putting stress on your body through training. Since they’re so easy for your body to use, collagen peptides are a better option if you want noticeable results without the hassle of poor absorption. 🙂

Fantastic video! It is easy to get confused about these supplements, especially how to take. Although you mentioned how much of each you need to get the max benefit, what if you combine? For instance do I get an additional 2-4% increase if I combine creatine with collagen or does it stay at the 2-4% or even better (maybe) is there a synergistic effect where maybe one could get a 8-10% increased benefit? What combinations do and do not work in combination of the ones you listed here (if I remember correctly, you said there were 2 that seemed to cancel the benefits of the other if used in combination). Looking forward to your next video!
@EverythingIsPhotogenic5 күн бұрын
@@albertdee1139 Thanks for the awesome comment! You’re totally right-figuring out how supplements play together can feel like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube while blindfolded. For creatine and collagen: they’re like peanut butter and jelly-great together but doing their own thing. Creatine gives you that power and performance boost, while collagen is all about keeping your tendons and joints happy. They don’t stack their benefits (so no magical 8-10% boost here), but they work on different systems, so taking them together can give you a well-rounded edge. Think of it as building both the engine and the suspension of your car-both are important, but they’re not directly amplifying each other. Now for combos that might not play nice. Caffeine and beetroot juice-there are some mixed studies that show potential stacking benefits as well as that the two can butt heads because caffeine might dampen beetroot’s vasodilation effects. Then there’s sodium bicarbonate and beta-alanine-they don’t fight, but they’re like two people showing up with the same dish at a potluck. They both buffer lactic acid but do it through different pathways with one presenting a substantial side effect risk, so it might not be worth doubling up unless you’re a serious high-intensity athlete. It's tough to tease out exactly what the stacked benefit would be because of individual variability in general response and metabolism. Beta Alanine works intracellularly by delivering carnosine and bicarb extracellularly by managing what spills over, so intensity is a factor as well. I think the bottom line to put a bow on all of these is that the science is there to prove they are effective, and then each person has to do that n of one experiment to tease out what works best. Your HR, pace, or power data can tell you a lot, but sometimes it's just good old fashioned RPE that tells you all you need to know 😉

FYI lactate helps buffer hydrogen. You want lactate in the short term. Humans don’t produce lactic acid, that is only produced in milk products.
@EverythingIsPhotogenic5 күн бұрын
@@SteakandChains I've covered this topic in extensive detail. Lactic Acid is the colloquial term for the build up of hydrogen ions in the system when lactate is produced beyond the body's ability to clear it. It's the simple Krebs cycle. Thus, my conversation was specific to 1-4 minute power.
@SteakandChains5 күн бұрын
@ maybe I misunderstood how you were positioning lactate. I understood your video to be placing it in a negative light as almost everyone else does when it actually is beneficial to clearing free hydrogen ions.
@EverythingIsPhotogenic5 күн бұрын
@SteakandChains I specifically said hydrogen ion buildup when lactate is produced in excess of the body's lactate threshold. I have never stated, including in this video, that lactate is negative. It's a necessary part of ATP production. You are improperly describing the process through oversimplification. The excess of lactate is what produces the hydrogen ions to begin with. It's a cyclic process. More lactate doesn't mean more buffering
@SteakandChains5 күн бұрын
@ my understanding was that the free hydrogen was produced as a byproduct of breaking down glycogen and then combines with pyruvate to make lactate which is then used an an energy source in low oxygen needs. So the hydrogen comes first and generally when people refer to lactic acid they use it in context as the muscle burn they feel when exercising or post exercise but that’s a misconception. Don’t get me wrong I do like the video and look forward to part two. I will go back and re-listen to make sure I didn’t miss your explanation of lactate.

Hi, I think I saw somewhere, Dylan Johnson springs to mind, that Beetroot Juice and Caffeine don’t work well together; as in the Caffeine eliminates any benefit from taking the Beetroot Juice. Therefore, I’m assuming it’s a case of using one or the other?
@EverythingIsPhotogenic5 күн бұрын
@@letscrafttogetherdiy4989 there are some conflicting studies surrounding the use of both... So many studies in this space are underpowered and confounding variables are ever present. Chemically speaking they should be additive because caffeine and NO production utilize different pathways, but the body can be a black box. If people are curious about the interaction, it's almost better to perform the N of 1 on themselves. Caffeine only, Beetroot Juice only, and then combined. Caffeine matabolosm in humans is highly variable and highly genetic, so it really is tough to say definitively if there is a blunting effect or enhancing effect.

I have been doing a lot of research on supplements and started doing bicarb and beta last week. I have noticed a difference from the bicarb but have had some major stomach issues. My question is , is it pointless to take bicarb and beta at the same time as they both do the same effect? Or will it enhancer ability to buffer lactic acid even more when used together? @@haydenpucker6109 seriously amazing accomplishments in 4 years! That's nothing in an endurance career and you're one of the best in the world, that's really remarkable! I subscribed to your channel, you should think about posting more when you can. Even your at home workouts or Zwift races with screen capture, it's really inspiring stuff! As for your question, it's a great one. The research is limited in terms of stacking Beta Alanine and sodium bicarb, but what I would say is that chemically speaking, they would likely have a complementary impact. They target different mechanisms: sodium bicarbonate works extracellularly by increasing blood pH and buffering hydrogen ions in the bloodstream, while beta-alanine works intracellularly by boosting muscle carnosine levels to buffer hydrogen ions within muscle cells. Together, they can create a more comprehensive buffering system, potentially amplifying endurance and performance during high-intensity efforts. The gut issues are the real wrinkle and it's tough to tease out what percentage would be gained by which when combined, but if you can manage it without risking your performance at your level, looking for every marginal gain, stacking is a science based path. I've heard some decent things about some of Maurten's newer formulations that integrate bicarb. If you haven't looked into them yet, there have been some folks who have reported the gut impacts are improved with their formulations. Might be a thought for competition use 🙂 Thanks for being a long time subscriber and representing the US in the world stage! 😉

@EverythingIsPhotogenic6 күн бұрын
@@Lazy_Jay_Racing the strips seem like a solid delivery method! Do you drink coffee or caffeine drinks normally? Or do you only consume caffeine for training? I haven't found too many people who abstain from caffeine other than training, but would love to hear the anecdotal impact on someone who only leverages caffeine for races. The beet root juice/nitrates are an interesting one. The studies I have seen seem to account for more experienced athletes with a statistically significant response, but the steady state execution is not the largest market so enthusiasm around it is pretty meh, add to that the taste and goofy restroom scenarios, I can see why people aren't clamoring to add it to their routine. The nitrates shots are expensive and don't really taste much better... It's worth digging into a bit more and weighing it against your own needs, it could give you a little boost. 😉
