Excellent as always. _Titanic_ is one of those scores that I’ve always wanted to get a peek behind the curtains of - the specific ways in which he blends synths and orchestra, for both the moving and terrifying portions of the film, make this score among his most chilling.

When I read at Patreon and heard it here that there might be a full printed score of "Cutthroat Island", I couldn't believe it hehe. That is one of my favourite scores and easily John Debney's opus magnum. You do so many Horner scores, thank you for that. I love that composer, in fact, the very first film music cd I bought was James Horner's "Willow" back in 1988 or 1989, and to this day, another favourite of mine. I recently bought his "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" from Intrada. Is that maybe a project for the future? I like that score as well. So many different "colours" :o) or "Casper"? hehe. Ans speaking of Michael Kamen... "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves" would come to my mind. Sorry for the many questions. Greetings, and keep up the great work!

Hehe no problem re: the number of questions. We'll have to see about Casper/HISTK. We have several licenses in hand which we need to bring to fruition first. Cutthroat is really great. I recently purchased the new 4K steelbook release, and honestly I think it's a better film than it's unfortunate reputation implies, with some absolutely bonkers stunt shots, and of course an incredible score.

Thank you very much for this very interesting video. Both versions have a lot of character, the first one is more adapted to the unfolding of the beginning of the film, I think it was the right choice. Besides, who made this choice at the time? the composer, the musical director, or was it a consultation with the composer and the production? In the second version the "Dixieland Band" part is really good, perhaps a reminiscence of the Weintraub Syncopators of his youth in the years of the Weimar Republic. The 6 bars of the piano part are particularly well thought out, it gives relief and a color that brings a contrast. I find it a shame that this part was not kept for the first version. But it is very good music anyway, and A Place In The Sun is one of Waxman's best scores.

Very interesting comparison. I can see why the studio decided for the version that is in the film, as it seems less “distracting” for lack of a better term. However, the orchestration, especially in the last part, is exquisite in the original version written by Waxman. Thanks a lot for transcribing the score and I hope you enjoyed the sunny day! ☀️

He was a masterful orchestrator, like truly gifted. And his use of reference/homage to other relevant orchestral pieces is on point. People call it stealing, or lazy and uninspired, but it was really quite well done and thoughtfully considered to apply to thematically similar parts of the story.

I think that this is actually a contrabass clarinet, because a lot of film score composers use "contra alto clarinet" and "contrabass clarinet" interchangeably. Moreover, a contra alto clarinet can't hit a C1, but a contrabass clarinet can.
@ChrisSiddallMusic
@ChrisSiddallMusic 27 күн бұрын
It's clearly marked as "in Eb" in the manuscript. Some models of Contra alto can get down to Eb1 (sounding).

@@ChrisSiddallMusic But how can a contra alto clarinet go down to C1?
@ChrisSiddallMusic
@ChrisSiddallMusic 27 күн бұрын
@@mr.vorrnyvorrn2516 Oh, now I see where you are referring to, in measure 21. The simple answer there is that I added an 8vb line which is not in the manuscript. I guess at the time when I was entering the notes I assumed it was meant to be 8vb as per the previous entry, and the fact that I hadn't written it "at pitch" meant it didn't flag as "out of range" and catch my attention. I've now fixed this, so thanks for highlighting it. If you spot anything like this in future, please drop me an email as it's easier to discuss and fix things there rather than in comments. The slept-on gold standard of James Horner and animated scoring. 🔥 Such a blessing to see it all written, and it shows how much a modified, all-acoustic soundscape holds up over decades. Thank you for sharing, hopefully there will be a full score release 🙌🏾

I wish one of you guys would publish "A River Wild" by Jerry, either you or Tim. Just watched the movie again, and there's also the documentary about scoring session for this film. This is probably the only scoring session of this length filmed featuring Jerry Goldsmith, and it was done by initiative of Fred Karlin (you know which footage I am talking about, obviously). I Think "The River Wild" would be a great score to publish, since all media music students could watch the recording session footage with sheet music. Just a suggestion...

Been waiting for this one for a long time - thanks Chris! Biggest revelation here -- the majestic tune that everyone remembers is actually played by a baritone horn, not a French horn. It never occurred to me, though on reflection it was on the wrong side of the stereo field for a French horn.

I love how JW marks the piece as "Burlesque". It's really one of his typical traits whenever he settles to score action scenes with a lighter tone (thinking also of "The Forest Battle" from Return of the Jedi). I think he referred to this as "vaudeville"-type of accompaniment.

Incredible transparent writing. The orchestral resources are enormous, but it looks almost like chamber music when looking at how it's written on the page. A great shout-out also to Horner's then-regular orchestrator, Greig McRitchie. He was a master.
