The slept-on gold standard of James Horner and animated scoring. 🔥 Such a blessing to see it all written, and it shows how much a modified, all-acoustic soundscape holds up over decades. Thank you for sharing, hopefully there will be a full score release 🙌🏾

Incredible transparent writing. The orchestral resources are enormous, but it looks almost like chamber music when looking at how it's written on the page. A great shout-out also to Horner's then-regular orchestrator, Greig McRitchie. He was a master.

Been waiting for this one for a long time - thanks Chris! Biggest revelation here -- the majestic tune that everyone remembers is actually played by a baritone horn, not a French horn. It never occurred to me, though on reflection it was on the wrong side of the stereo field for a French horn.

Thought the same thing, they probably set the baritone horn near the trombones/trumpet

He was a masterful orchestrator, like truly gifted. And his use of reference/homage to other relevant orchestral pieces is on point. People call it stealing, or lazy and uninspired, but it was really quite well done and thoughtfully considered to apply to thematically similar parts of the story.

This is absolutely Dinotastic!!! Thank you so much Chris, one of my all time favorite childhood animated film’s and score. My Father loved the music for Land Before Time so much that he had the music played for his 10th Year Wedding Anniversary.

What a lot of people may not know is that during early development for Land Before Time. Producers Steven Spielberg and George Lucas envisioned the film to be in the same continuity of Walt Disney’s Fantasia Dinosaur segment from Rite of Spring. To which they even considered that the whole film would have zero dialogue and have only music score. It would have been very interesting to have seen that early version get made. Also there were a lot of deleted scenes that were considered too violent that eventually was omitted in the Final Cut.

Horner was like, “I sure do love that Daphnes and Chloe…”

Today is exactly 9 years since James’s tragic passing. This cue’s duration is 7:55, is Daphnes and Chloe all you heard…

Horner wrote great music - Ravel wrote mostly boring music. I am sure all composers find inspiration in older compositions, but no - this is not copying Ravel.

The first 2 minutes are based on the opening to Bartok's "The Wooden Prince"

@@tomekkobialka Yes - there is an unmistakable likeness to the opening of that piece. But Horner takes it to a beauty that was never in Bartok.

All film music is derivative of prior classical works. Without Holst, no Williams & Star Wars. Let’s see you compose film music the public cares to replay 30 years later, and it can’t be inspired by anything you’ve ever heard.
