Hi Alicia, this podcast and your PhD research sound very interesting and I would love to read more, in particular the paper you refer to in the podcast. What is the best way to find your articles?

I love this point at 16:35 when Sophy talks about the idea of an organization as being very strange. I hadn't really thought of this before.

Loving the chat 😁 I'm curious about how you handle an objection from a member of another member moving from explorer to associate. Is there an existing process for that or is it handled fluidly per situation? For members that aren't as articulate giving feedback it could be scary objecting in such a transparent forum. What things have you noticed help members feel safe when sharing?

Interesting that you ask that, since this has happened several times in the last year actually. There is a general process for how to engage with a block on the invitation of a member, which is the "regular" process one would use for engaging with blocks in consent decision making in general. However each situation is of course different, so we try to be open to adapting as needed. A key element for engaging with blocks is usually having 1-1 or small group conversations with the blocker to understand the concerns better. However as you say, it can also be scary to raise a block in the first place. With Greaterthan being fairly small (21 members) and a very high trust group, this has not been a big issue from what I've seen. If people don't feel safe enough to raise a concern in this kind of context, then I think an important foundation for being able to function as a healthy self-managing organization is missing. So if that's the case, then developing a culture of trust is an important priority.

Brilliant. Everything needs feedback, but don't confuse feedback with projections!!!

Another high, high-level framework that fits in here somehow is Harrison Owen's 3 steps to a co-active (distributed, self-organizing) organization: 1) take care of the givens; 2) tell the story; and, 3) keep grief working. And the naming & HOW's of each of these, I've found, have been immensely useful in keeping us ... adhesive, at least. Great series! 👍 ❤️😊

The way that Peter Koenig talks about doing what you love as a source of creativity is so affirming. His Source work is very interesting, I look forward to using this lens to think about creation and organisations in my work and life. Thank you Francesca for doing this interview and sharing it with us here.

Thank you for sharing this clear presentation of the DisCO model, what we still cannot get our head around is the fiscal side of transnationality (for our Permaculture CoLab Translation Circle - maybe there are some synergies we could reflect on!). I'll be looking out for the next cohort of the course to get more on that "nitty gritty" on the economics and thé "accounting question" 😃

I'm writing in a swell of gratitude and sense of being well within a context of great potential. Thank you for having and openly posting this conversation. It strikes me as such a potent fulcrum conversation for our moment - a critical conversation that can only be addressed in a context of "togetherness." So much in the world can break open into new possibility when this topic is engaged in by groups of people who sincerely wish the best for each other. There are unquestionably enough resources for "the whole" and yet the whole hasn't engaged in taking responsibility for the hard decisions. There is no "daddy" caring for the whole. Indeed. Unless we, collectively, learn to care for that piece of the puzzle. We must find ways to weave together the rich rich wisdom all through and around us to address the questions that no single person or organization is in a position to care for. Through your generously shared dialogue and articulations, you have make whatever we do next so much easier.
