so the ladies are serving team 1 and guys are serving team 2 so to speak?
@BetterPickleball

The ladies started the match as the serve team and the guys started as the return team. This changes throughout the match as you noticed. But each time you serve that team has server #1 and a server #2. Here is a video series that is also helpful. betterpickleball.com/beginners/

I'm a novice, and I was so confused about how to count the scores and the sever number. I always had to ask my partner what the scores and server numbers were when it was my turn to serve, and I was not proud of myself about that. I watched this video four times, and I finally and totally understood now. I am so happy!! This is the best video ever for people who are having a hard time figuring out the scores and server number. Highly recommend!!

If the partner covers the middle why not hit the ball down the line?????
@BetterPickleball
@BetterPickleball 22 күн бұрын
That is an option. The main point in the situation is that one player is not up to NVZ and how the player that is at the NVZ can help the team by taking the middle shot while they wait for the player to join them at the NVZ.

Please correct me if I’m wrong! The ball must be “dropped”! The ball can never be given a toss upwards??
@BetterPickleball
@BetterPickleball Ай бұрын
It needs to be a release. Here is the rule 4.A.5. The serve shall be made with only one hand releasing the ball. While some natural rotation of the ball is expected during any release of the ball from the hand, the server shall not impart manipulation or spin on the ball with any part of the body

It seems like it would be easier if you serve it and your opponent misses it; it's one point for you. Whoever messes up the opponent gets the point, lol. Seems easier to do that way!

Traditional Scoring is used most of the time in pickleball. However it sounds like you are referring to Rally Scoring and it used also, just not as often. Here is a video on Rally Scoring kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5SWfKOdr7RggM0

The player in A can adjust very quickly to where they are required after watching how/where the return is being played to, as soon as the ball is hit they move & can affect the opposition. Posn B&C can block returners options.

In terms of missed shots, the return of serve is the most important. Yet it is only used once per game. The drop shot can be used 3rd, 5th and defensive midcourt shots, In the long run the drop shot may help your game more. Let say 1 team can only drop well and the other only returns well. Which team wins. My guess is the drop team, would win because of better defense.
@BetterPickleball
@BetterPickleball Ай бұрын
The drop shot is important too - and you are right, throughout the entire game.

I like rally scoring, however I’m undecided as to whether or not I like rally scoring as you described or the MLP rally scoring in which players never move court positions even if they serve and score. I feel both would have their advantages or disadvantages especially if playing with a left handed player or when a team wants to stack or keep their stronger player on the left/odd side. I feel in “traditional” rally scoring as you described where players move positions if they serve and score, it would make stacking or unwinding the stack much more difficult to keep track of, and could potentially put teams that do that at a disadvantage. On the flip side, MLP rally scoring is almost advantageous and easier for teams who want to keep their stronger player on the left/odd or a left handed player on the right/even. idk, honestly, I’ve never tried stacking during rally scoring so I think I need to see how difficulty it is, but would love some insight from people who do play rally scoring and also stack. Thanks for the video!

The serve is not the most important, not even close. At higher levels its just the start of the point and to keep the opponent back so you can prepare for your 3rd, which IS the most important shot. Whether its a drive or drop, the 3rd shot sets the pace. If you cant do a proper drop on 3rd or 5th youre not going to win many points against higher rated players.
@BetterPickleball
@BetterPickleball Ай бұрын
I agree with you, the serve is not the most important, it's the return of serve. The return of serve is a critical shot at all levels of pickleball (loss of a point), and its importance becomes even more pronounced as you advance to higher levels of play. A short return doesn't just give your opponent an easier third shot-it opens up the opportunity for them to attack immediately, putting you on the defensive right from the start of the rally. At higher levels, where speed and precision matter more, a well-placed return can be the difference between maintaining control of the point and finding yourself scrambling under pressure.
@MrGbustamante
@MrGbustamante Ай бұрын
@@BetterPickleball yes, return of serve results in loss of point and trumps them all

I recently played in my first men's singles tournament, using the strategy in this video - I stayed near the base line after returning a serve or taking the third shot, and then worked my way to the kitchen line as play allowed. I'm 71 years old, and this strategy allows me to win most games when playing recreational singles with my pickleball buddies who range in age from 18 to 75. Unfortunately, even though I had better accuracy and more control than 5 of the 7 other players in my bracket, that strategy didn't work for me in the tournament. I've since watched a bunch of KZbin videos on singles' strategy, watched a bunch of videos of professional singles' matches, and watched a bunch of videos of men's 65+ tournament medal matches. Because of what I've seen, every time I'm hitting a deep ball from the back part of the court, my follow-through now includes immediately sprinting towards the kitchen line as I lift my head after the ball leaves my paddle. I will stop and shuffle backwards a bit if I've hit a bad shot that might allow my opponent to hit an overhead, but otherwise my primary goal is to follow the ball and get as close to the kitchen line as I can before doing a split step in preparation for my opponent hitting the ball. Using this strategy, I've gone from usually winning singles matches with my pickleball buddies to pretty much controlling virtually every game (I usually choose to keep the game fun for everyone by hitting balls my opponents have a chance of returning instead of putting the ball away). Full Disclosure: 1) In the four weeks since that tournament, I've spent a lot of time having partners practice their serve and third shot as I practice returning their serve, sprinting towards the kitchen line, and split stepping before returning that third shot. My guess is I've got between 500 and 1,000 practice trips toward the kitchen line under my belt; 2) Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings now find me on a nearby empty tennis court where I'll go through a pattern that includes a lot of side-stepping, sprinting from the baseline to the top of the service box, and split stepping. I do the full pattern in about a minute, rest until my heartbeat drops below 80, and then do the pattern again. As I write this, I'm able to do the full pattern 5 times. 3) I'm using a pretty loose definition of the word "sprint." My mind's eye has a vision of me looking like Ben Johns or Tyson McGuffin sprinting towards the kitchen line, but when I videotape myself, it still looks to me more like a "lumber" or a "waddle" than a sprint. 4) I switch hands, which gives me about 2' of extra reach when an opponent hits balls to what would be my backhand side (yeah, if I was a youngster only 40 or 50 years old, I might follow the conventional wisdom and work on developing enough footwork speed to step and turn my whole body in order to hit a backhand any time the ball is hit 4' or more to my left. But, as an old guy who has practiced switching hands tens of thousands of times, it takes a lot less effort to hit that same ball by just switching the paddle to my other hand).

I have not found a definitive answer to the following type of serve being legal or not. I understand where you feet can be for a legal serve. Now, if you serve at the center line, and your feet are on the correct side of the center line. Your point of contact on the ball is actually on the other side of the center line. Is that legal?
@BetterPickleball
@BetterPickleball Ай бұрын
Yes, If you feet are within the correct side of the center line and the ball is on the other side of the center line, that is acceptable. The location of your feet are what is most important.

So watch how John McEnroe serves a pickleball it’s not following the rules BUT the serve in pickleball unless between a novice and a professional will not be a factor. It’s nearly impossible to get as many aces as you can with a serve in tennis.
@BetterPickleball
@BetterPickleball Ай бұрын
It can be difficult to get an ACE in Pickleball as most serves are returnable. It would be better to have a consistently deep serve with a safe margin for clearing the net.
