Indy car did a good job developing a hybrid car without batteries saving a huge amount of weight.

The new rules really seem to require supercomputer levels of energy state management, with a net loss on the total energy drivers can actually recover and then use. Whoever figures out the strategy to optimize energy output under these new rules is going to have a huge advantage (I guess that’s always true, but it’s never been this complex before). Hard to imagine Mercedes not having a particularly good year with all the R&D they’ve done with their production car lines. This will probably benefit the rest of us with more efficient performance cars that sound like real cars, but you can already see that in order to manage energy states drivers are going to have to coast at the end of long straights, and speeds will be a lot lower than they are now.

Oscar was faster than Lando in the first stint. Oscar was faster than Lando in the second stint and stayed ahead even after an error. Lando only got ahead of Oscar because of a team decreed undercut. After the undercut Lando was immediately told that he needed to swap back. Lando ignored his engineer and not only did not give BACK the position but drove aggressively. Meanwhile Oscar was following instructions to preserve his tyres: “Bring the tyres in. Bring the tyres in. Don’t worry about Lando.” At this stage Lando was driving faster than Oscar but only because Oscar was conserving and Lando (against orders) was pushing. Anyone who thinks Lando earned a win is fooling themselves. Even Lando eventually admitted this to himself. It was a strategy with a purpose that was debatably unnecessary. McLaren clearly had not made plans to use team orders to move Lando forwards at every opportunity. It could be argued that this is not the right decision from the perspective of the driver championship of 2024 but it may be the best strategy for the team long term. Time will tell. On the day the only truly definitely bad decision was for Lando to ignore the team orders. If he had followed them he would have the same points but better trust in from the team. It is unlikely the team would have allowed them to race at this point but it was Lando’s only chance to win the race and keep his seat.

I think that Nascar and the FIA are in a race with each other to see who can completely ruin their series first. I don't understand why they think that cars that are all the same speed is going to be better racing. It is actually killing the racing. We are at the pinnacle of motorsports and they are taking power away and trying to have every single car be a cookie cutter version.

If McLaren had let Lando win, it would have been due to the gift of pit stop preference. Either way it can/could be seen as a gift depending on your perspective.
