I agree with you! Vibrato isn't natural and like every other aspect of singing, should be treated as a skill. There are different types that are acceptable, in general (or rather it's more common), for pop singing and not aesthetic for operatic/classical singing. Voice scientist have documented that many golden age opera singers have approximately 5-7 cycles of vibrato per second, and a distance from the primary pitch of a half step above and Maj 3rd below (or more). Additionally, there is an accent on the peak of the cycle. This more or less is the equation for optimal vibrato = "bigger" sounds

I absolutely loved your analysis, particularly the brilliant analogy of the plagal cadence and the 'Amen.' Marvellous! Out of curiosity, which piece of music is that 'Amen' taken from? It has such an ethereal quality!

The singers are terrible. Wobbles everywhere. Collapsed head voice. Vulsalva problems. Men singing ingolota. No open throat singing. Sounds terrible. Bring back great singing and people might start listening again

I'm someone who had a very classical beginning of my musical journey and could've been a classical musician if not for a major musical moment that made me pick up the guitar and crank up the distortion. I grew up in a modestly wealthy family, dad is a celebrity in the country but in the entertainment industry as a whole on radio and TV, so I wasn't in an elitist enviroment, and that's maybe why my passions were the thing that followed the family in our musical journey and not the belonging to any elitist society. Family stories say I've been listening to classical music when I was a little fetus, my dad put headphones with classical music on my mom's belly when she was pregnant with me and in very early childhood they also bought me specifically live CDs and DVDs of concerts because dad believed it would be the most benificial for early musical development, and they turned out to be right! I had a very strong fascination stringed instruments and specifically the cello at first, luck was on our side when we discovered there was a cello specialist and professor a few streets from us, so we went to him when I was like 3 and he got me "diagnosed" with perfect pitch! But at the same time while I tried learning the cello at age 4 my dad got me into blues, specifically BB KIng and Clapton, with a bit of rock like Springsteen, Santana and Led Zeppelin. Then he bought me Steve Vai's Visual Sound Theories DVD, which is his orchestral concert with the Metropole orchestra in Amsterdam and the way Steve literally conducted the entire orchestra with making weird noises on the guitar made me wanna start playing guitar! so I switched and never looked back since. Now I'm 21, senior in my country's equivalent to Berklee and started to get in the industry as a session guitar player! So yeah, the fact my background wasn't elitist or even classical related probably saved me from being with the wrong crowd :D

Suzuki teacher here. I 100% agree with everything in this video. However, I have to push back on the suzuki quote as it’s taken out of context. He was actually advocating for self care. The idea is that if you’re not feeling well ( can’t eat) you can skip practice that day. Whereas traditional methods encourage practice while I’ll including going to rehearsal, performing any way..that “show must go on mentality”. Also, many suzuki teachers work actively to promote healthy musicianship and there is a huge push for more diversity in the repertoire. We also don’t advocate children to practice alone, group study is a large focus as is building a studio community over competition. We educate the whole child-which was Dr. Suzuki’s focus. Character first, ability second. He was more interested in developing character than professional musicians. Because there is the emphasis to learn by ear in the beginning improv it’s actually easier for Suzuki students. Many Suzuki students also now offer scholarships and sliding scale tuition! We also work with the ability of the child in front of us and can actually tailor more easily the games we play to their interests. In fact, most young suzuki students learn solely through playing games! I’ve never heard any fellow Suzuki teachers scream at students. Last, the suzuki association of Americas denounced racism as an organization following the murder of George Floyd. I think Suzuki is actually the answer to abusive classical music. 😊

I enjoyed this video and you took on some very difficult subjects which are almost impossible to clearly define. Having said that, I was very surprised by the roles you chose for examples of basso profundo roles. Bartolo in Barber of Seville is the epitome of a basso buffo role and is occasionally but rarely sung by a profundo. His aria can be challengingly high even for seasoned bass-baritones. There is nothing low in this role for a bass, and while it is usually performed by bass-baritones and basso cantantes, it is not unusual for it to be performed by a baritone. The Commentaore is not particularly low and while profundos occasionally sing it, it is usually handled by large voiced “regular basses.” I am surprised you did not pick the most obvious profundo roles: Sarastro in Magic Flute, Osmin in Abduction and Baron Ochs in Rosencavalier. 0:10

Good explanation. However, the «droit du seigneur» was never an actual right. It was more of a myth invented in the age of enlightenment, though presented as fact, esp. in art.

Kids give me hope. Having played many classical chamber concerts for outdoor events and schools, I've found lots of children are fascinated by the instruments and want to know more about them. They come up to the musicians wide-eyed after performances and ask great questions. Sometimes they'll ask "How do you turn it on?" They don't understand that acoustic instruments don't use electricity. So cute!

Classical musicians have always been poor, many of the great composers barely scraped by and were not appreciated until after they died. Mozart was buried in a pauper's grave. His music didn't die. If anything, CM is much more alive and widespread now than it ever was, the music of Mozart et al. is enjoyed by far more people today than ever before. And it seems like Early Music using period instruments is continuing to grow. I'm sure composers from the Renaissance to the Romantic never imagined their music would survive this long and be appreciated all around the world. Thanks to KZbin and IMSLP I continually discover music from previous centuries that is "new" to me.

Contemporary classical and jazz has zero future as stand alone genres. The only time extreme dissonance is really enjoyable is in a good horror/slasher flick.

#2 changing the setting -- this is done in theater all the time, with shakespeare in particular; the comedy of errors set in the Harlem Renaissance, or Midsummer Night's Dream set in a parochial school, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and Coriolanus given modern political settings. At its best, it can recontextualize the play and give some extra resonance to something that might otherwise be easy to dismiss as quaint or archaic. At its worst, it can be blatant gimmickry that detracts from the play. And as for #5, I sometimes *love* a bare-bones staging. I'm not really interested in fancy sets -- if I want visual art, I'll go to a museum. I want performers who can sing beautifully and sell the drama and they can be wearing street clothes or jump suits while they do it, I'm happy to suspend disbelief ; if the fellow playing the grand inquisitor can project that low C, he can be wearing a referee's uniiform and I'll love it.

You raise some good points, but as an older person I can say that I heard similar things in the 1960s about classical music dying or being dead and they didn't happen.

Such a great tutorial for opera lovers and potential opera lovers. However, I wish you could provide another soprano to illustrate the Turandot. The one you used was flat on the high notes in an opera where hitting the high notes on pitch is the apex of the aria. Please keep up the good work. Jill in Texas.

I don't know, classical pieces have lasted for centuries vs cheap pop chart garbage that never remains in the collective memory with the same strength. Fans of lame generic music aren't swayed by quality but instead popularity of what they listen to. Those are the dullwits who do not think for themselves who move from fad to fad in every aspect of their life.

Young sopranos would never start out as spintos. They would start out as soubrettes and then age into a full lyric or spinto. When the soprano is in her forties, she will then age into either a dramatic or Wagnerian soprano. The same thing applies to mezzos. A mezzo would start out as a lyric. However, she would either become a lyric or spinto soprano as an adult, or stay a mezzo. If she stays a mezzo, she would become a dramatic or a Wagnerian mezzo in her forties. Mezzos who become sopranos will take the lyric/spinto-dramatic/Wagnerian path.

Some interesting and nuanced ideas here, and thank for you setting these out. Perhaps another interesting question connected to that of relevance is that of 'where is the value?' Starting from the point of asking how our musicking and even what kind of musicking can bring value to our audiences, and then doing some musicking that brings that value. This would also tie into your point about taking the music TO the audience, but instead places the audience first and asks 'what is the value in a musical experience for you?'

Handel never used countertenors in his operas as they lacked the power and technique of the Italian singers. If a castrato wasn't available then he would employ a female singer en travesti.
