How long can I hold untill I apply wood filler after sealer is applied? Is it okay to apply filler after 2 days or 5 days?
@TotalBoat
@TotalBoat Күн бұрын
Hi there! You need to wait until the TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy has fully cured before applying wood filler. The curing time for Penetrating Epoxy is at least 5-7 days. After this period, ensure the surface is properly prepared by washing it with mild soap and warm water to remove any amine blush, and sanding it smooth.

I'm just starting out and using total boat tabletop on a Charcuterie board. I cannot for the life of me get rid of the bubbles. My shop is 72° & 45% humidity. I am stirring very slowly and carefully. I tried heating the liquids in a hot water bath, which helped but didn't eliminate bubbles. I also tried putting the mix in a vacuum chamber, which barely did anything to remove the bubbles. Hitting it with a torch or heat gun only gets the big bubbles. Oh and I sealed the pieces with shellac & an epoxy seal coat. I'm doing all the things everyone suggests that you do, yet my pours are still filled with thousands of micro bubbles. I'm about to give up on this. I'm so frustrated.
@TotalBoat
@TotalBoat 11 сағат бұрын
Hey there- we are so sorry to hear you're having issues with TableTop. Does it seem that the bubbles are emanating from the substrate still, or from the initial stirring, or from the cure reaction? Vacuum should remove most of the bubbles if it's put in there after it is mixed but some will still stick around, you need to put it under a decent amount of vacuum for it to be effective though. We do have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so we recommend reaching out to our tech support team for assistance moving forward. Our support team is available M-F 8am-5pm est at 1-800-497-0010.
@rfehr613
@rfehr613 11 сағат бұрын
The bubbles are definitely in the epoxy and not coming from the wood. Whether the bubbles are a result of prep or the reaction I cannot say. I did also try vacuuming parts A & B individually to see if getting all the air out of those first would help, but it did not. My vacuum chamber maxes out at 30inMg, so if that's not enough then I don't know what to do. It certainly does bubble up in he chamber; it just doesn't really ever settle back down to a point with less bubbles than when I started.

I need a small amount and the container I have with the 3:1 is waaay too much. So if I set my scale to grams, for thickset I’d need 100 grams of part A resin to 28 grams B hardner? I’m only confused because let’s say I wanted less than 100 grams then what?! And the formula to figure it out on total boats website is beyond me
@TotalBoat
@TotalBoat 5 күн бұрын
If you need less you can cut the amount in half and do 50 grams part A to 14 grams part B.

Gleam can adhere to most painted surfaces as long as the surface is properly prepped. We recommend performing a test in a small area first. Also, please note, that Gleam does have an amber finish and can affect the color of the current painted surface.

Can you comment on the difference between quick coats, seal coats, and flood coats and which total boat products serve these purposes?

To seal wood, we would recommend our Penetrating Epoxy. This epoxy has a very thin viscosity so it can penetrate and seal the wood. For a flood coat, we recommend our TableTop Epoxy.

As someone who has done thousands of repairs over many decades as a professional fabricator, I can say that, apart from impacts, star cracking/crazing is a result of two things; 1. The laminate is too thin (or too dry in a minority of cases) causing the laminate to flex excessively. While gelcoat doesn't want to flex, especially as it ages. 2. The gelcoat is initially applied too thick (this occurs in corners or difficult to spray areas). The thicker the gelcoat is, the less it will be able to flex along with the laminate. This is exacerbated by time. As the gelcoat ages it becomes more brittle and less able to flex as the styrene leaches out over time. Without styrene, the resin in the gelcoat becomes brittle. This is why a gelcoat which has been applied too thick will usually not show up as a problem until after a few years when the styrene begins to evaporate. Cheers

Can I somehow mix this and pour through a narrow opening into an enclosed void, or do I have to completely open the top of the void first? I have a 60 year old fiberglass boat, and the benches are closed voids meant for flotation should the craft be swamped. Each bench has a tunnel down through from front to back to allow water to flow to the stern at the center-line of the floor. I've discovered that the forward bench has tube that has deteriorated and allows water to easily get into that voice space. I'm considering the relative merits of just adding more fiberglass to patch that, or potentially cutting a 2" hold in the top of the bench and using that to fill the void with foam, then glassing over that hole. So -- can I effectively fill at void of about 2 square feet through a two in hole?

It can be done as long as there is a way for air to escape as the foam expands.

Does it need to be taken down to the original substrate/primer, re-primed and painted from scratch? @TotalBoat
@TotalBoat Ай бұрын
You should wait until the previous coat of TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy starts to become firm but is still tacky, or when most of it has been absorbed into the wood, before recoating. This generally helps to avoid sags or drips and ensures a strong chemical bond between layers. If the epoxy has dried to the point where it is no longer tacky, you should wash the surface with soap and water, then sand lightly before applying another coat.

Typically with sanding and polishing it is to smooth and give it a shine. Since it is in an area that's not really visible wouldn't typically be necessary. Even if it wasn't being on the inside of the boat having it be flatter instead of glossy helps with being easier and helps avoid being blinding on the interior sides when it reflects the sun.
