as a 40-something year old "non-religious" quasi-buddhist, former almost christian dude of color (with former mormon friends), this witty, wise, and honest review was refreshing. helped me appreciate heretic even more, so thanks!

I realize I'm super late to the party here, but thanks for making this. It was really interesting to get the perspective of someone within the church on a movie that so directly challenges religion generally and the particular denomination you belong to specifically.

You're still a Mormon after watching a movie disprove your religion because you're a blind follower. It's not cute or endearing that you enjoy the message of the movie as a Mormon because you're so accepting.

The movie isn't profound or scary. Just deconstructionist and psuedo-intellectual. It's not surprising that a lot of people like this movie, even though if you remove the centuries old deconstructionist talking points, there's not much there.

Bloody hell, this soap opera tale is right up there with that soap opera where characters ended up 100 years in the past. I am glad I am only vaguely conscious of these soap opera caricatures and stereotypes. It all makes one nostalgic for Hanson.

it's very odd how these sisters didn't had any sense of danger at first you'd blame them, but then you figure it out that if you were there as a missionary, you'd be so involved into the work that you'd even realize what's happening but yeah, come on sisters, just pray to god or hit this guy with something sharp or just call the office or your leaders warning what you're about to do as a former missionary and a former zone leader and district leader (my district was formed entirely by sisters) i was always checking if the sisters already got home or if they had any lessons alone with a single male, that's really important for their safety

I appreciate your analysis of the film’s stance on religion. Friends of mine who also enjoyed the movie have quarreled about what Heretic’s “stance” on religion is, and I have come to the conclusion that there really isn’t a stance taken. There are arguments, discussions, and actions that are presented within a religious context, but it’s kind of the individual’s job to take a “personal journey” (as Mr. Reed himself pointed out in their first discussion) in order to find their own true religion. One of the many possible messages that I got from the film, and which I don’t really hear other people talking about, regarded the similarities between militant atheism and fundamentalist religion. I come from the Presbyterian church, and a staunchly anti-war political background. For years, I have been horrified by what other Christians have said to justify some of the worst atrocities visited upon Muslim countries by our own military. They say that Islam is barbaric, brutal, irrational, and radically indifferent to the suffering it causes. Therefore, bombing them into oblivion is the only moral choice we have in order to keep the disease of their ideology from spreading, even if the victims are just common people trying to live common lives (children even). This racist jingoism drove me away from the church for the longest time until I started hearing the EXACT same things being said by the New Atheists like Sam Harris and the late Christopher Hitchens who celebrated the horrific numbers of casualties being generated by the American invasion of Iraq, and of all things said they would entertain the idea of a nuclear first strike against Muslim nations if it meant keeping their religion at bay. In Heretic, I saw something of a similarity between this line of thinking, and Mr. Reed’s actions. Nothing that Mr. Reed says about religion is technically wrong. It all makes for a pretty compelling case against religion. I’m sure that a lot of atheists probably cheered during the part of the movie where he systematically dismantles the shallowness of Sister Paxton’s belief system (of course we see later that it is more resilient than he/we anticipated). But that doesn’t change the fact that he still is literally KEEPING STARVING WOMEN IN CAGES IN HIS BASEMENT JUST TO WIN A DEBATE. Yes, he’s right about a lot of things, but being right isn’t the same thing as being righteous, and it boggles my mind that otherwise intelligent people have been so seduced by the idea of being “correct” about religion (whatever that even means) that they wouldn’t condemn, and sometimes would even advocate for such appalling treatment of other human beings. Anyways, thank you for giving us your analysis. As a non-Mormon, but fellow Christian I now feel more educated about the stunning diversity of spiritual systems in the US, and their opinions about society, culture, God, etc. God bless!

My mom has spondy. When you have spondy biking is impossible bu then again Luigi had surgery. Forget your social life, going to mall, basic walking. You are basically crippled for the rest of your life, you will stay mostly at home, yes you can still go the bathroom, yuo'll be a homebuddy. Surgery is not allowed when you are over 60.

Mr Reed's apologetics are weak (the inaccurate "zeitgeist"-hogwash about Horus havinmg 12 disciples etc in particular), but not as weak as maintaining that Joseph Smith was not an obvious fraud.

josh isn't favored by the insiders in the music industry who pick and choose which artists will get promoted and pushed to the top. it's not like you can't be successful without it, but it's very difficult. unfortunately, the drama with two women who are now a couple of the biggest artists in the world has created an impossible barrier for josh to break. there are way too many people out there who assume he's a bad guy and will never bother to check out his music. he literally has zero hope at this point. i hope he continues to make music despite his small fanbase, but i wouldn't blame him if he didn't feel it was worth it anymore. he probably has a better chance at finding success in acting at this point.

Iv always wanted to pull the uno reverse card on a mormon missionary and trap them into a neverending conversation about Christianity, go DEEEP into some joseph smith lore that ALOT of mormons dont even know because its actively hidden from them.. i wouldnt be sll creepy about it but that m8ght not even be possible in a situation like this lol.. also having ur religion reduced to "bob ross monopoly" was just.......disrespectful,AND FUNNY AF!!

Luigi's Mansion just HAD to pull down the mask to flash his smile. He didn't necessarily want to be caught, it's just that he wanted to have those things on him just in case he was. Good luck finding an unbiased jury to convict Luigi's Mansion.

I find it interesting how most of the Mormons (as individuals) I have seen discuss this movie do so quite favorably, talking about how the movie made them feel seen and heard and is quite accurate to the Mormon missionary experience, and yet it's the church itself as an institution coming out vehemently against the movie and protesting it. This kind of thing proves a point the movie was trying to make I feel, about spirituality and religion as a practice not being a bad thing, yet criticizing religion as an institution.

I’d love to jump on the train with everyone else but the reality is this is a rich kid who got bored killed someone which will get him at least 15 years in prison to expose a problem we all already knew about. His parents could have fixed his back uninsured, they are richer than Brian Thompson. Also the KZbin channel is almost definitely fake

My bestfriend in highschool was a Mormon, had 2 brothers who went on missions to Colorado. He ran as far as possible ( to the other side of the country as soon as he graduated high school ). his parents were extremely nice to me every time I was over though. His mom tried teaching me about Jesus one time but I told her I was good and she was really cool about it.

My take away. Whether a person believe or disbelieve, both doors open to a path that leads to being controlled. Horror is the correct genre for a movie that is a metaphor for the last days.

North Korea may not be the ideal place to live, but at least it's a more pure form of society, no social media, no corporate controlled government in charge, no pornography, no woke stuff, no nothing. I don't know if that makes the society better or worse, I can't judge.
