Hey Phil Could a water/meth system replace the need for an intercooler? Thinking of doing a behind the engine build. Would tbe nozzle be better tapped into the manifold after the carb or is it ok to have it before? Thanks
@TurboMinicom
@TurboMinicom 2 ай бұрын
Hi. Yes it’s possible to use water injection as a substitute for an intercooler. Though bear in mind if you tune the car to depend on the extra knock suppression the water gives and for some reason the system fails, it could cause big issues. I would install the nozzle before the carb, directly after the compressor on the turbo, this will allow some time for atomisation. Which fitting the nozzle in the manifold would limit. You could also look at fitting the nozzle pre turbo, though there’s possible negatives to this, so it’s worth some consideration and research before going that route. Phil.

The blend at top and bottom of the valve seat cut usually produces a tad more flow and valve work like back cut etc as well, ide like to see a video with progressive mods from stock to every little trick to show the importance of what makes for more flow and what gets the airflow stable and mods that damage flow and create a unstable port, ive only just stepped into A series development but im thinking ill have some fun along the way, i like your videos there informative

Thanks for sharing such useful information 😊👍🏻, I'm planning on building a 998 turbo engine for my Morris Minor, I'll use a 948 block bored out to 998, a 1098 head, the turbo I'm going to use is a gt15, plus mg metro turbo manifolds, carb and plenum, I have most of the parts already, but its quite a complex job, and I still have a lot to figure out, I'm not looking for huge power, just a bit more go and some turbo noises 🤣, I think it'll be a lot of fun 👍🏻

Im late to the video, but i cant seem to find an answer anywhere. On the adaptors which go into the head and the block, how are the adaptors sealed to the block? I was expecting to find these kits with o-rings, are the adaptors pressed into the head? Theres obviously something im missing, as surely it would leak without any kind of sealing. Also, great informative video 👍

When rebuilding one from a NA carburetor other than the seals going the other way around and doing the T peice mod. Is that the only modification needed. Nothing else needed to be done when rebuilding?
@TurboMinicom
@TurboMinicom 4 ай бұрын
There is an additional seal in the carb body under the dashpot on the turbo carbs. You could machine the required groove, which would allow you to use the additional seal, or seal the dashpot using some multi gasket or similar. Ensuring the face of the dashpot is machined perfectly flat would help here to.

@TurboMinicom
@TurboMinicom Жыл бұрын
Make sure the dashpot face is completely flat and use some Hylomar or similar to seal it. Though this becomes a bit of a pain if your having to remove the needle repeatedly to profile it. Alternatively machine the groove in the carb body if have access to a mill.

I've found carbs with and without them, but they're are useful as it stops the seals being pushed out under boost and rubbing against the springs. Probably not really an issue, but I've fitted thin metal washers in place before if the plastic ones weren't present.

Really interesting and demonstrates the importance of allow equivalent breadth around the valve guide and stem so as not to be an obstacle to volumetric efficiency. At Piper Cams in the 1970s we also had a mini “port wind tunnel” (that gave us accurate VE readings using mercury vacuum tubes) so we could compare good and bad mod options and tune camshaft profiles to suit. Many thanks!

Looking ok, as you will know changing or moving the valve guides always has to be before any cutting and lapping-in in of new valve seats. Machining a taper on the last quarter inch of the protruding inlet guide is also common practice (where maximising heat dissipation for the valve head and stem is not as critical as on the exhaust side).
@TurboMinicom

I bullet nose all my guides. The exhaust guide requires less taper than the inlet as there is more material left in the guide boss so less of the guide protrudes into the port.

Only that by shortening them you are reducing the sideways support to the valve stem as it is struck by the rocker so it will wear out quicker letting the valve rock more. Also on the exhaust side heat sink for the valve will be less of course.
