Web Dev can easily be just as complicated as any other program in any other language. Just try and position yourself to work on meaningful projects and tasks that are hopefully building something unique and challenging instead of finding yourself in positions where you are pumping out half arsed clones or doing the same repetitive web tasks over and over.

"Go intern at SpaceX" yeah sure let me just call them up and get hired lol. A lot of people work these web dev jobs because things are so competitive these days, you take what you can get. If you want to work at SpaceX you most likely need to either go to a good school, network, and probably have several previous internships at big companies, these are the people SpaceX hires.

Soooo true. I was sooo bad at many things I have done in the past that I had to work on. But at least I got better at it with time. All the countless times I was given tasks I have never done before. How could you get an amazing result at that. But you grow on such situations. Funny thing tho is, I rarely pretend to be good at something. Because I am not really good at anything. Weird things is people always gave mre credit for being skilled at certain things, where I absolutely knew I am totally not.

I find it annoying that people cant see how full of shit he is. Like 30% of his advice is good, solid advice. And he has some talent. Some of his advice is terrible (only go to 3 universities?) Ok, that's absurd. Like why is he saying he does 10x more work than people at Facebook. People at facebook made pytorch and faiss. There are clearly talented people working there. He's on twitch saying he works 10x harder than ppl who work 40-60 hour weeks at facebook. That's not fuckin possible. He works less hours than ur avg 15yo girl sweatshop worker. He goes on twitch more than most of the people in the world. He doesn't seem to understand or care that most people in the world don't have close to the level of privilege to ever get to that level. So, idk. Maybe my rant here should help commentators here who are seriously deluded to think he's dropping mad "truth bombs". He's not. He's a mentally immature person.

I agree with many of his points, but as someone over 40, lemme tell you what. It's all in genetics. People wants to take X amount of risks based on their genetics and their childhood education, which is largely genetics of their parents anyway. So don't feel bad if you can't take risks or improve your programming if you already tried Y years and you are just not into it. Here is something to enhance my point: suppose you ask JB or John Carmack or anyone who excels themselves to NOT care about code quality, would they do that? No! Because it's not in their genetics! What you should do, is to listen to your genetics, and pick something it tells you to do. Don't fight with it, especially if you like me already tried for decades. It went nowhere except for huge amount of frustration.

This guy is typically right but the whole thing about not investing money in the stock market is just stupid. If everyone took that advice and took $500k out of their retirement savings to fund a startup, no one would retire.

It's funny this dude shits on people who code for any reason that helps their life, e.g., to pay their bills or live a life. But if you apply his thinking framework, he works on writing video games, which are the most meaningless things ever. What a walking contradiction this dude is! We need to stop idolizing superficial people like this man and validating their worldviews, which lack depth & self-reflection!

In every interview and talk that he gives he always comes across so self reflective, intelligent, humble, and thoughtful. In everything outside of those talks and podcasts he seems the opposite. Its like when the people he is talking to or addressing arent people he can directly see and hear, he cant help but go full savage mode. He takes the whole involuntarily dehumanizing anon people over the internet to the next level. Seems like the kind of guy who would have crazy road rage.

lowkey think you're a loser if you discourage new people interested in game development because you are annoyed at getting the question a lot. don't take questions or some shit then because naturally you'll get those questions, and that is a valid question. for many game designers, actually getting a software, opening it up, and making a level or coding some shit and getting something down is the first major hurdle in a game development journey. the second big hurdle will be keeping the drive to continue with it to actually complete it. the third big hurdle is actually making a second game. this guy made a hit indie game when there were VERY FEW serious indie games. he is very successful, and he likely is now a better programmer than I ever will be. but in these clips you see the side of him that is just a whiny pretentious boomer
