Kubrick's film was still under the Production Code and he had to tone down the eroticism & add more suggestion & innuendo. In a 1969 interview with Joseph Gelmis, Kubrick stated: "I would fault myself in one area of the film, however; because of all the pressure over the Production Code and the Catholic Legion of Decency at the time, I believe I didn't sufficiently dramatize the erotic aspect of Humbert's relationship with Lolita, and because his sexual obsession was only barely hinted at, many people guessed too quickly that Humbert was in love with Lolita. Whereas in the novel this comes as a discovery at the end, when she is no longer a nymphet but a dowdy, pregnant suburban housewife; and it's this encounter, and his sudden realization of his love, that is one of the most poignant elements of the story. If I could do the film over again, I would have stressed the erotic component of their relationship with the same weight Nabokov did. But that is the only major area where I believe the film is susceptible to valid criticism." You can read the entire interview online. Watched Lyne's 1997 film recently & if you haven't seen it I recommend it. Sue Lyon was also in John Huston's The Night of the Iguana (1964), good film. She was in John Ford's last film, 7 Women (1965), which I've never seen. I don't think it's ever been released on video in North America.

Yeah the very next video was supposed to be the reaction to Lyne's adaptation, but even after 4 re-edits/uploads, it still gets blocked, so I've got to keep cutting it down to make it Copyright "friendly." I did read bits of this interview after watching this, and a lot more supplemental material between films, and after watching Lyne's version, and my problem wasn't the lack of eroticism, but the treatment of Humbert with kid gloves (har har). I don't think it was Nabokov's intention to write a love story; I do not think it was his intention to write a deeply sympathetic character who finds love after losing it. I believe he intended to challenge himself by making a morally reprehensible protagonist able to charm the reader enough to where they'll enjoy the book, subject aside. The book relies heavily on having an unreliable narrator, and it's genius in how the veil is lifted as you read it. It is sometimes so subtle that it can be completely lost to the reader. Unfortunately, many readers did not, in fact, "get it," and the book has a pretty tainted reputation because of it; hated and enjoyed for the wrong reasons. I am determined to reupload the Lyne adaptation again, so I won't go into it if you plan on watching it, but I will say that even though it was, on its face, more accurate, it still omits a lot of important scenes, and takes some liberties with the story that made it feel like another betrayal. Before the video got blocked the first time, I got a comment mentioning some deleted scenes, and I looked them up and it would've been a vast improvement, addressing most of the problems I had with the movie. I cannot understand why these scenes weren't included in the final cut...Well, I can understand, but I don't like the conclusions I'm forced to come to when considering the reasons why they were left out. If I'd never read the book before watching either adaptation, there's no doubt I would've enjoyed them both more, but I ended up walking way feeling wounded. Maybe that's overdramatic, but the book is just...it's so fuckin' good. Nice to see you again, buddy. Thanks for watching!

@@weruinmovies Thanks, & you're welcome. I haven't read the book, will try to at some point. A couple days ago I watched The Constant Nymph (Edmund Goulding, 1943), based on Margaret Kelly’s 1925 novel. A 24-25 yr old Joan Fontaine plays a 14 yr old in love with a much older man. Kinda lucky for her how she got the part. She played a teenager again in Letter from an Unknown Woman (Max Ophüls, 1948).

Yeah that was more a comment on how anachronistic some of the set decorating was. I was happy to see later on an interview with the director where she addresses that very thing, and how intentional it was to really push how Elizabeth was a character who is sort of stuck in time. She also directly mentions the Kubrick influence on that, so I'm glad it wasn't just me imagining things.

I think they're fun. I've explained this enough times in enough videos. If you want to watch some kid act shocked or disgusted or whatever, there are more than a few channels out there that will give you the sort of melodrama you're looking for. Thanks for watching!

The main historical points to understand for this movie, are that Japan has been routinely invading Korea since at least the 1500s. The two worst times were the Imjin War (1592-1598 - the samurai/anima/revenant is from this time), and the Japanese Occupation (late 1800s-WWII - the evil, ghost grandfather was a Korean who worked for the friends-with-Nazi-Germany brutal Japanese Imperial government). - The two things are inextricably connected because they are the two current bookends of Japanese (extreme, culture-altering/scaring) brutality in Korea. - This last point is really beautifully acted in the face and reaction of the actress who plays Hwa-rim when she finds the samurai helmet - it's here she begins to understand what has happened and the look of extreme terror and then adding defference to the Japanese anima/samurai (who was a particularly brutal Imjin War General) is some of the best acting here. The spiritual practices referenced (besides general Buddhism) are Korean Shamanism (Hwa-rim) and Feng Shui (Kim Sang-deok). - I don't know a lot about either, but for me, I also accept it just like I try to suspend disbelief for overly symbolic Christian horror - the devil and pictures/symbols stolen from other, older cultures, 'camon!?) Foxes are good things in Japan but evil in Korea. In Korea, if you see a fox near a grave, you are in very mortal danger. For the odd scene with the monster, I believe the demon/anima/revenant sees the pagoda and for easy (though it is a bit different) comparison, it sort of works like a cross. The anima sees the pagoda, and has to stop and pray (and then turns into the ball of fire). In the movie, the iron spike in the samurai corpse (the anima) planted in the ground at that particular location, is meant to "break the tiger's back" - the tiger being Korea, in other words make them weak. The evil grandfather was buried on top of the anima to make sure no one would dare to dig up the anima - first they would have to deal with the evil grandfather who was guarding it. We need to pay attention to the reasons why this drama is maintaining its top position in several countries across Asia. Additionally, we need to objectively consider why someone intentionally disregards and criticizes this drama. Let me give you some background information to help you understand this movie. During the Japanese occupation, Japanese geomancers came to Korea and drove iron pipes into the peaks of Korea most vigorous mountains to cut off their energy. Besides this, the Japanese army operated Unit 731, a biochemical military unit, and committed terrible atrocities by conducting live experiments on Chinese, Russian, and Korean people.

I first learned about it in college when a playwriting instructor used that term to describe one of my stories and she gave me a couple of authors to check out. I do think the movie tries to make it clear that they always remember being the other person through shared dreams and the like, even if it ultimately leaves it ambiguous about whether they are literally one mind switching between two bodies or if they start that way and slowly begin to diverge into seperate people. I am of the opinion that they are literally one single mind the entire way through and even after the termination attempt it's all just Elizabeth killing herself. Elizabeth is so deluded through her self hatred and vanity (and I do feel it's deliberate that Elizabeth is unsympathetic) that she is addicted to being Sue and can't stop herself from going back to the adoration and fame. She knows it's unsustainable, she knows it's wrong, she knows it's selfish and hypocritical and crazy and all the other things she calls herself, but she can't stop herself. Because like you said, otherwise there is literally no point to the movie and it makes no sense for Elizabeth to do this at all if she never actually experiences being Sue.
@weruinmovies
@weruinmovies 2 ай бұрын
@loupgarou95 Yeah, I mentioned in a reply to another comment about the nightmares being an indication of some latent memory, but otherwise, I see no evidence of a clear memory transfer. If that is in fact the case, and Sue still decides to do what she does, knowing it will end both of them, it still doesn't quite sit right with me, because Sue clearly doesn't want to die. When she sees the termination syringe, she goes ballistic, and she doesn't really get any kind of realization that she's just ended herself as well aside from the weird "You are one" brain blast that happens after she murders Elizabeth. You could say that Sue didn't really care about living anymore either, and just wanted to stay alive long enough for the NYE show, although that's questionable, and it would be pretty silly. But silliness isn't entirely out of the equation with this movie. It's one of the things I loved about it.
@weruinmovies
@weruinmovies 2 ай бұрын
Here's the other reply, because for some reason, their comment isn't showing up on my feed: I would like to believe that, but I didn't see much evidence of memory retention. The part where 50% hag Elizabeth is slapping herself in the head, I interpreted that as her desperately trying to get the thought of "balance" to stay in her head, but it just doesn't. I think the most we see to support the mind transference thing is stuff like Sue waking from the turkey leg nightmare, or Elizabeth waking from Sue's guts falling out of her back nightmare. If I'm missing something more concrete, please let me know! There are also things like both of them being surprised/disgusted by the state of the apartment after waking up, Elizabeth being exasperated by Sue's comments on the talk show, Sue discovering Elizabeth's butt-print in the chair, like she hadn't known what she'd been doing all week; these are all things that point to neither of them being conscious during each other's time, until the termination scene where they are both literally conscious at the same time. I've watched the movie over now several times in the process of editing this video, and I can't find much that suggests both versions are conscious of each other's actions outside of the weird nightmares just before coming to, which would explain how Elizabeth recognizes the jerk on the motorcycle, and their ultimate animosity toward each other. I still believe that after Sue's first week, they are exclusive minds, with only a weird-dreamlike connection between them, which also may fit into the drug-use metaphor, and it might be enough to make up for Elizabeth's odd decisions. Even if none of that is true and it makes no sense at all, it still gets a 5/5 from me. Still think it's great! Sorry for the big comment, but I wanted to be clear.

I 100% believe there is a mind link because there's certain things that Sue just knows that only she would know if there was a direct link between consciousness, but what I think is happening is more like a split personality disorder type thing going on where she hates her other self so much that she's completely disassociated from it because if there's not a mind connect than what is the point? why wouldnt she just stop at the first sign of something horribly wrong? What would she be getting out of it?

@weruinmovies i honestly think the Director wants it to be ambiguous on if there is a mind link or not. I just re-watched it again last night though and I find myself asking myself. How does she know her name is sue? there are so many small things, they always seem to be having a continued conversation on the phone with the phone operator of the substance for example Elizabeth when she's talking about her finger, she says she used up more time and the operator says the balance needs to be respected and then when it's Sue pissed off about the turkey incident, she says this balance isn't working. but how would Sue know about the balance because he was talking to Elizabeth about it? SUE NEVER questions what she is and knows exactly what to do right after being back born lol. There is very subtle things and I think it's on purpose. There was also some cut out of the original screenplay confirmed that there is a link between the two, and I believe the Director purposely took it out to be more ambiguous about it because I believe you see it both ways.

Regarding how Elizabeth knows Sue's name, it can be assumed that she came up with her new name before the first switch. The conversation with the substance dealer would also sound pretty linear, as evidenced by only 2 numbers on the lockers at the pickup spot. Presumably only she and the nurse have been taking it? When Sue calls to complain about the balance not working, it was my assumption that she was referring directly to the initial 1 week rule, and she was fed up with how disgusting Elizabeth was deliberately making their living environment. She was clearly surprised by the state of the apartment. She was also surprised at the end when she sees the termination syringe for the first time. After having seen the movie several times during the editing of the video, I've determined that the mutual experience is probably exclusively through a dream-like state, similar to how drug abusers continue to abuse drugs, despite not entirely remembering the high when they come down. It's the only thing that really makes sense, and if it's true that a complete mind transference happens, then that causes a lot of issues itself, and would completely kill Sue's angle. She can afford to be irresponsible if she isn't entirely aware that she's killing both of them by stealing more time. If it's always *really* Elizabeth, then it wouldn't make a lot of sense that she'd disrespect the balance, because she's able to completely intellectually understand the threat. It's stuff like this that really makes me wish we could get some director commentary on this because simply cutting things from the script to make it more ambiguous seems to both fix and cause problems at the same time. Like, I wish I could just talk to her about it!

@stephenbull2026 absolutely. With all the needle stuff, you could easily equate it with any kind of destructive drug abuse. I suppose where the metaphor loses me is that we don't see Elizabeth getting any kind of high out of the experience. She just immediately blacks out before even catching a buzz. If the desire to end it all would've been more prevalent, that would've made more "sense," but then the movie probably wouldn't have been half as fun, so I dunno. Great film, though. I've got Fargeat's first film for another reaction very soon, because I like her style a lot. I'll be looking forward to whatever she does next.

I don't think they meant autistic people are more likely to be possessed or anything like that, I think they meant evil bases it's power on what it understands about your mind (like how Pedro is supposedly immune but his fears and guilts still give the evil power and influence), so it works differently on every mind and that would include working differently on neurodivergent people. In most cases in the movie the possession is pretty simple to follow, but it stills works kind of differently for everyone. For example Eduardo, the boy who kills the cleaner. He is technically possessed from the very beginning, but he's still functioning and apparently not fully controlled by the evil. He kills the cleaner and apparently eats his mom, but he still gives the guys instructions and warnings he wouldn't if he was fully possessed. I think she meant it as in "evil works differently on different minds" she just said so bluntly it comes off as weird. Also, I might be nit-picking this, but I think the actor made an effort to make Jair different before and after he's possessed, even while not speaking. When Sabrina approaches the car Jair isn't possessed yet, and he's staring ahead without speaking like usual, but you can tell he starts breathing faster as she approaches, and he's almost startled when she touches the glass. Even if he can't speak he still shows he's scared. After that he's already possessed and those small details go away. Anyway, sorry for rambling. The video was great I just wanted to share my thoughts lol

Still, it looked like some other deleted scenes, like "the swimming scene," might've rectified some of the problems I had with how Humbert was being framed as less dangerous and debauched than he actually was. Edit: yeah just went and found like 9 deleted scenes. It's maddening that some of them weren't included!

I adsolutly loved your reaction. You pretty much hit the nail in the head in regard to interpretation of the movie. If you ever have the chance try to find the DVD of this movie with the director's comentary. He is very infoymative in both about the themes but also the technical aspects of this movie. He sounded like a very grounded man despite the craziness in this movie. He seems to even be as amused by his own movie as the typical watcher and reactor who watches it for the first time. This movie was inspired by two things: his messy divorce and the revolt he felt when soviet polish authorities revoked his passport and forced him into exile. His revenge fantasy was imagining how funny it eould be if one of the agents from the secret police was married to his wife and had to endure his divorce. So this mobie is both a tske that at his ex-wife and the petty burocrats/agents of soviet Poland's secret services. He also took the piss of the burgoise free-spirits of West Germany eho he saw as a bunch of fakes.

@@weruinmovies It's almost as if a movie doesn't have buckets of blood, it gets hated on a lot. I like movies that do something different and The Babadook and Cobweb each have a style that I enjoy.

Just skimmed through the vid, trying to avoid spoiling it. Gonna have to check this out, thx for putting it on my radar, it's out on blu-ray 6/11/24. I recently watched Moon Garden (Ryan Stevens Harris, 2022), worth a watch.

Hey I did a watch party for Moon Garden back in October! It's still in the backlog so I shouldn't say too much about it, just in case I get around to making it into a video, but I will say that I appreciated how they were able to create what they did on a low budget, and I also liked how the director's daughter wasn't an *actor* in the strictest sense, resulting in a more authentic performance.

I think THIS flick might possibly have an EXTRATERRESTRIAL INVASION theme (at least PARTLY), with aliens taking human form and having sex with Earth women so that they can SUPPLANT earthlings. And what was focused on and portrayed here in THIS MOVIE, with this family an all, was just ONE INSTANCE of it, but it’s also happening on a GENERAL WIDESPREAD basis too (THAT just isn’t being depicted).

Hey, It's Jerm. I just wanted to say that Ryan, the other dude involved with this channel, wrote the original response to you, not me, the jerk in this video. I also appreciate your kind words, but I would NEVER tell you or anybody to "tell all your friends," because overt self-promotion feels like exposing my butthole to people in public, and it highly embarrasses me. Ryan embarrassed me with this comment. But thanks for watchin' dude.

Not a terrible film, not great either, I'd say decent at best. Watched 'Count Dracula's Great Love' (Javier Aguirre, 1973) a while back & that one really sucks, terrible film. 🤣Didn't really care for 'What We Do In The Shadows' either. It's not terrible, I just thought it was underwhelming, especially considering all the praise. Meh. Some of my favorite vampire/Dracula films are: Horror of Dracula (Terence Fisher, 1958) Daughters of Darkness (Harry Kümel, 1971) Near Dark (Kathryn Bigelow, 1987) Innocent Blood (John Landis, 1992) Thirst (Park Chan-wook, 2009)

Resolution (Justin Benson/Aaron Moorhead, 2012) sucks too. What other films that suck have you seen? 🤣
