I don't think they meant autistic people are more likely to be possessed or anything like that, I think they meant evil bases it's power on what it understands about your mind (like how Pedro is supposedly immune but his fears and guilts still give the evil power and influence), so it works differently on every mind and that would include working differently on neurodivergent people. In most cases in the movie the possession is pretty simple to follow, but it stills works kind of differently for everyone. For example Eduardo, the boy who kills the cleaner. He is technically possessed from the very beginning, but he's still functioning and apparently not fully controlled by the evil. He kills the cleaner and apparently eats his mom, but he still gives the guys instructions and warnings he wouldn't if he was fully possessed. I think she meant it as in "evil works differently on different minds" she just said so bluntly it comes off as weird. Also, I might be nit-picking this, but I think the actor made an effort to make Jair different before and after he's possessed, even while not speaking. When Sabrina approaches the car Jair isn't possessed yet, and he's staring ahead without speaking like usual, but you can tell he starts breathing faster as she approaches, and he's almost startled when she touches the glass. Even if he can't speak he still shows he's scared. After that he's already possessed and those small details go away. Anyway, sorry for rambling. The video was great I just wanted to share my thoughts lol

@johnryder2878 by Jove, you're right! I just watched it. Still, it did not have the same sort of resonance it had in the book, and I think it falls back on how different the Lolita character was portrayed in the film. Still, it looked like some other deleted scenes, like "the swimming scene," might've rectified some of the problems I had with how Humbert was being framed as less dangerous and debauched than he actually was. Edit: yeah just went and found like 9 deleted scenes. It's maddening that some of them weren't included!

I adsolutly loved your reaction. You pretty much hit the nail in the head in regard to interpretation of the movie. If you ever have the chance try to find the DVD of this movie with the director's comentary. He is very infoymative in both about the themes but also the technical aspects of this movie. He sounded like a very grounded man despite the craziness in this movie. He seems to even be as amused by his own movie as the typical watcher and reactor who watches it for the first time. This movie was inspired by two things: his messy divorce and the revolt he felt when soviet polish authorities revoked his passport and forced him into exile. His revenge fantasy was imagining how funny it eould be if one of the agents from the secret police was married to his wife and had to endure his divorce. So this mobie is both a tske that at his ex-wife and the petty burocrats/agents of soviet Poland's secret services. He also took the piss of the burgoise free-spirits of West Germany eho he saw as a bunch of fakes.

I hated Mia Goth's character. You're right, the man character was a wuss. Goth kept taunts him with insults that would only hurt the feelings of a young child. Yet he bursts out crying. That scene and the one about the "dog" were really dumb.

the way to watch this film it to look at it like it is film 7 or 8 in series and you are coming at it backwards. If you NEVER saw a MCU movie before and you went over a friends house and they were watching Capt America Civil War you could follow it but so much of the movie goes over your head, that is THIS movie.

Hey I did a watch party for Moon Garden back in October! It's still in the backlog so I shouldn't say too much about it, just in case I get around to making it into a video, but I will say that I appreciated how they were able to create what they did on a low budget, and I also liked how the director's daughter wasn't an *actor* in the strictest sense, resulting in a more authentic performance.

I think THIS flick might possibly have an EXTRATERRESTRIAL INVASION theme (at least PARTLY), with aliens taking human form and having sex with Earth women so that they can SUPPLANT earthlings. And what was focused on and portrayed here in THIS MOVIE, with this family an all, was just ONE INSTANCE of it, but it’s also happening on a GENERAL WIDESPREAD basis too (THAT just isn’t being depicted).

The Blood on Satan's Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971) is worth a watch too. Pretty sure an uncut version is with the alternate title, Satan's Skin. 88 Films is releasing a "New 4K Restoration From The Original Camera Negative" UHD/Blu-ray set on 3/25/24. The Devils (Ken Russell, 1971) is a crazy film that's been censored, cut & banned over the years. This was all a fantasy in that guys head. Basically his fantasy was attempting to prevent him from asking and then acting on the question, "Why not end it?" He is afraid of what he is going to do at the end of the day.

Again, not judging, I should know, because the scene of Sabrina eating Santino didn't gross me out, I'm a bit desensitized about that because after watching enough of those videos of Gaza (dead, dismembered kids and all that) I'm just prepared for anything I guess. I wouldn't burst into laughter though. Good reaction, I enjoyed watching it. Greetings from Argentina.

Ok I just subscribed. You’re watching my fav movies and your comments are so hilarious yet very precise. Btw if you read traditional ghost stories from japan, they are pretty much like this. Like very strange and absurd with no european morals to the story whatsoever. Like stuff just happens cause that’s life and that’s ghosts for you the end and it’s fantastic. Also I think obayashi reminds me of maurice sendak in that sendak used to say that he actually didn’t particularly make things for children, that he just had that kind of sensibility and other people would categorise his work. With animation and this kinds of movies It’s a bit the same like cartoony and colourful doesn’t have to mean for kids. And also kids actually have very intense and bizarre imaginations.

Thanks buddy! I haven't read a lot of Japanese ghost stories, though I have seen Kwaidan and I don't remember it being this absurd, but I suppose a lot of the older costumed Yokai films have some similarity...but this movie I think is just in a class of its own. I'm not sure if any of Obayashi's movies are anything like this, but I'm keeping him on my to-watch list for sure.

Original screenwriter Steph Lady, who sold the script to Francis Ford Coppola's American Zoetrope, said "the film was a shocking disappointment; a misshapen monster born of Kenneth Branagh's runaway ego. He took a poignant, thought-provoking tragedy and turned it into a heavy metal monster movie. The casting of Robert De Niro as the monster was beyond inexplicable." Frank Darabont, who did a second draft, later called the film "the best script I ever wrote and the worst movie I've ever seen". He elaborated: There's a weird doppelgänger effect when I watch the movie. It's kind of like the movie I wrote, but not at all like the movie I wrote. It has no patience for subtlety. It has no patience for quiet moments. It has no patience period. It's big and loud and blunt and rephrased by the director at every possible turn. Cumulatively, the effect was a totally different movie. I don't know why Branagh needed to make this big, loud film ... the material was subtle. Shelley's book was way out there in a lot of ways, but it's also very subtle. I don't know why it had to be this operatic attempt at filmmaking. Shelley's book is not operatic, it whispers at you a lot. The movie was a bad one. That was my Waterloo. That's where I really got my ass kicked most as a screenwriter ... [Branagh] really took the brunt of the blame for that film, which was appropriate. That movie was his vision entirely. If you love that movie you can throw all your roses at Ken Branagh's feet. If you hated it, throw your spears there too, because that was his movie.
