Beau Is Afraid is a 2023 American surrealist tragicomedy horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Ari Aster. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the title character, Beau Wassermann, and also includes a supporting ensemble cast consisting of Patti LuPone, Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Kylie Rogers, Parker Posey, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Hayley Squires, Michael Gandolfini, Zoe Lister-Jones, Armen Nahapetian, and Richard Kind. Its plot follows the mild-mannered but paranoia-ridden Beau as he embarks on a surreal odyssey to get home to attend his mother's funeral, realizing his greatest fears along the way.
Distributed by A24, Beau Is Afraid premiered at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on April 1, 2023, and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on April 14, 2023, before a wide release the following week. The film received generally positive reviews from critics but was a box-office bomb, grossing only $11 million

Best comedy of 2023(and maybe the last decade) Might be my favorite by Aster. Could have definitely edited a good chunk of the forest shenanigans out. No need for thr 3hr runtime. Enjoyed watching your reaction.

What a great reaction. It’s relieving to watch someone else laugh as much as I did and just go on the ride. There was so much griping and grumbling and head scratching when I saw it in the theater, it was annoying. I’m pretty much on board with every sentiment and every reference you cited. I saw it a couple of times and laughed even more at a second showing. I looked around me at the horrified faces of people who didn’t find naked circumcised stabber or suicide by Sherwin Williams as hysterical as I did and it made me laugh even harder. Seeing audience members become confused, terrified and disgusted all in one expression is delightful.

Thanks. After I watched the movie, I looked up the meta ratings and I was a little surprised at first by how poorly it was received. I tend to forget that we live in a post-irony era, and as meme-happy and lighthearted as people present themselves on the internet, the fact is that satire is still as misunderstood as ever. In another time, the people who hated this movie would've been the ones calling for Voltaire's head. I would've loved to experience this in a theater in the same way you've described it!

@@weruinmovies you would’ve enjoyed it. I was irked by the negative audience response at first but fully shifted perspective. I’ve also always found anything even mildly absurdist a bit impenetrable, even after being subjected to repeated viewings of Adventure Time by a romantic interest (some of which scratched an itch but most didn’t) and seeing this film, certain moments felt like an in, I became a little less impervious to the humor of certain situations or ideas.

Understandable. I think part of the comedy is how relatable the anxiety is.

I'm pretty convinced that this is a dreamscape. The whole thing follows a sort-of dream-logic, and while events "flow" into each other, they seem to lack any real causal significance. Also, everything is happening TO him. He is the experiencer of a dynamic world. Very dream-like.

I can definitely see that. I got the strong impression also that it was intended as a sort of mythological tale and afterward, I read somewhere that Aster described it as Odysseus as a middle-aged Jewish man; that made sense to me.

There's so much hidden stuff in this movie. On your next watch, look for the creepy guy on the cruise stalking Beau and Elaine. He also appears creeping on another kid in a billboard in the begining of the movie. Also the tattooed guy who drops the soup and says, "too hot", does the same rhing after grabbing something out of Beau's microwave.

There's also some other things to pay attention to. How Grace tries to help Beau, but backs off whenever Roger enters the room. The phone call Grace is on when she says, that was not part of the original deal. The man in the woods talking about cleaning and feeding Beau's dad. When the maids carry off Elaine, Mona says, "Feed Harry" who is Beau's dad in the attic.

Sure, I had a lot of questions and half-noticed observations that were cut out of the final edit, but while editing, I end up watching the movie several times over, and I picked up on a lot of what you've mentioned and subsequently, I enjoyed it more. I still hadn't made the connection to "Harry" though, until you mentioned it just now, and you gotta be right on that one. I don't know who else Harry could be, except for Beau's twin. He does hold out a bowl or a pot or something when he's revealed...but with the implication that Elaine is the meal, it makes more sense that Harry is actually the name of the father. @@JohnnyWitchCat

@@weruinmovies there's a scene that shows 3 plaques (tombstones) with the names Mona, Beau, and Harry Wasserman. Also forgot to mention that if you pause the scene where it shows Beau's apartment during the MW accomplishments scene, the description notes that it's for people recovering from MW drugs. Also the handyman from Beau's apartment is also one of the workers at the funeral, and someone else had pointed out that Roger and Grace's son, may be one of the funeral workers too. Fun movie, enjoyed watching your reaction!
