The very first question is how many mics someone wishes to use, of course. Just based on a standard 5-piece kit with 2 crashes and a ride (skipping a big debate about using 50 alternative miking techniques) I'd recommend 9 mics to capture that configuration well. Kick (1) Snare (2) Two rack toms and floor tom (3) Hi-hat (1) Overheads (2). And we often mic the ride cymbal as well (1). Total of 10 mics. Again...skipping all the debate...THAT is a very standard, professional studio miking configuration. That being said, I'd recommend that someone get something like an Audient ID series interface with optical (2 or 4 channel) as a BASE for its more immediate tactile control over monitors, headphone volume, DI, Dim, Hi-pass, phantom power etc. then add the additional 8 or more channels via optical/ADAT using either the EVO series or the phenomenal Audient ASP800 or ASP880. The ASP series preamps sound SO GOOD! Not surgically clean like millenia or grace, and not warm and wooly like Neve...but beautifully clear with a touch of analog bliss. By the way...please learn much more about MOTU. They're an exceptional, plug and play, rock-solid, built like a tank interface that is far more popular than you may realize. :)

Thanks for the video, Matt. Not sure how automatic any pitch matching is supposed to be in either of these apps, but pitch and phase alignment between original and replacement sample waveforms that you expressed some disappointment with is going to be quite dependent on their basic pitches as well as the polarity right from the start of each waveform (one waveform may begin going positive and the other negative for example, so polarity flip would be useful). So without any pitch correction, it is not the fault of the apps when you see and hear misalignment. Does that make sense? If pitch isn't matched, the waveforms will simply go out of phase with one another over time. This is why automatic pitch matching in UVI Drum Replacer looks very valuable to me. Try tuning the replacement drums to the originals first and only then looking at the relative waveforms in Drumagog and Trigger2. I think you'll be happier with what you see and hear at that point. Let me know how it goes and if my response here is off the mark or not.

Actually there's a different sound between the plugin version and the actual hardware of the Cl1b (own the hardware first and then got the plugin), I tend to lean hardware. But the plugin is nice to have for multi-tracks, since I don't have multi hardware units.

Hey! Thanks for the video! Have 2 questions if you can help me out: Im thinking on getting an SM57, which has worked super great playing in church; I have a Meinl Slap Shaker (Cascanet) in the front of my cajon, which I use as a Hi-Hat of sorts and it picks it up clearly (cause my cajon has the hole in the front and the mic is put there). But, I wanna do the 2 mic combo for more articulation and a more full sound. Instead of a 52, Im thinking of a Beta 57 because (apart from being in a slight budget) has made the cajon sound richer than the regular 57. So I would like to know if thats a good combo or a way to go for that. The second thing is that I wanna know is if I could put the Beta 57 more inside the cajon (to get use of its proximity effect) so I could get more bass emphases out of the cajon.
@mattingramsoundАй бұрын
Thanks for the questions. There is no wrong answer in sound - If you like it, then do it. If you like how the beta 57 sounds, then that may be a great combo for you. Personally, I would stick with mics with more low end, but that is just me. If you end up putting the mic closer to the rear hole, any additional low end you might get will be covered by an extreme amount of mids that you get from the inside of the cajon. My advice - experiment and see what sounds better to you!

@mattingramsound Thanks! I appreciate it; will experiment and see how everything goes!

hi Matt...really enjoyed your video! I have a cajon that has both a bottom kick (front port) and a wooden snare mounted above the bottom kick..im thinking of using either the D112 or the 52 on the front bass port and then a 57 to capture the snare drum and pick up a couple little 6" splash cymbals...what is the best method for placement so there is no bleed between mics? any suggestions are very welcomed..many thanks ... the kit is from Loota
@mattingramsoundАй бұрын
The best way to reduce bleed is just to make sure you are using cardiod mics. The 112/52 and 57 combo should work well. There is really no way to completely eliminate bleed.

⭐Hello dear friend! I have a question for you and your community, but first I must thank you because I almost bought a Big Knob Passive... In my studio I use two computers each with its own interface, but I only have a couple of monitors. I suppose one solution is to buy a couple of monitors to work comfortably. But... is there a switch to switch between two sound sources? What do you recommend?

@mattingramsoundАй бұрын
Thanks for the question! The inputs 9-16 are line level inputs, meaning you cannot plug a mic straight into them. You would need an additional 8 preamps to hit first, then go into the line inputs on the tascam. Hope this helps!

Here is a tip everyone. If you only have carpet and the Cajon sounds too dead just don't sit on it. Your butt acts as a dampener like putting your one hand on a drum skin while you other hand hits it with a stick. If too dead, pull a chair up next to it and sit in chair and reach over the cajon to play it. On carpet it will come alive big time, maybe too much, but adjust accordingly. Maybe try to sit near back edge of it. But, I've gotten great rich tones from my $70 cajon by not sitting on it and then adding any reverb. Bam! Sounds great.

This is the first video I've seen of yours, but I couldn't help noticing your comment on noise with your old passive controller. Something's not right. You can't get noise with a passive unit. All a passive is nothing more than a volume control. You can make one. If you just buy a raw volume pot and attach some rca or ts connectors to it, that's it. In fact, if you're just using the controller for volume only, you don't even have to plug it in. That's what makes it passive. Where I'm going with all of this is, as long as you're sure that the unit was really passive, the noise has to come from somewhere else. Since a passive has no gain, you have to rely on whatever you're using before it, to have enough clean gain to get the signal through your passive and on to the the next component. Some components can handle that with no problems, and some can't. In a case like that, you'll need to use a preamp, because having a gain stage on the input almost always guarantees you won't have any problems. Noise like what you are talking about, is usually gain related. However, the problem could be something else, such as mixing balanced and single ended connections, you may have cables that work fine in an active connection, but not passive. Plugging a non line level signal into something that is, or mistaking a gain control for a volume control can also cause noise issues. I just though I would mention it because the industry does a very poor job in some areas, and problems like this are one of those areas. If you still have the equipment and you're interested, do some experimenting. If you try different combinations, you'll figure out what the problem is.
@mattingramsound2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I recommend you check out the full video on the big knob passive to have a better understanding.
@052RC2 ай бұрын
@@mattingramsound I watched the other video you mentioned. Just about everything I said in my first post still applies. One of the things I didn't realize is that some of the noise was due to a dirty volume pot. Something like that isn't considered a defect because its maintenance. All pots get dirty and have to be cleaned. Aside from the dirty pots, the differences between the Mackie and the Audient are so great, that its hard to put them in the same class of product. The Audient is a preamp, and the Mackie isn't. An active line stage, because of its design, if far better at being compatible with a wider range of components than a passive volume control. You can get just as good, if not better, sound from a passive, but you have to know what you're doing. It takes more work to get them sounding right. You have to rely on the active circuitry of the connected components to work well together, where an active setup is much more forgiving.
@mattingramsound2 ай бұрын
There is a wide range of quality in all components, including pots. As I mentioned in the review, I did clean it, many times, but it never sounded fully clean, and it continued to get noisy very quickly. And yes, the big knob passive and the NERO are vastly different in quality, however, at the end of the day, they are both monitor controllers.

The easiest way to get rid of a ground loop is to cut the ground on a balanced run or a 1:1 ratio transformer (isolation transformer - like a passive DI but with a different ratio and the input has 2 legs on the transformer). No one should be lifting the ground on there power - good way to die.
@mattingramsound3 ай бұрын
Yes, you can start snipping ground wires in your cables, but I would really rather not have to do that. Without the big knob, there was no ground hum. With the other controllers I have reviewed, there has been no ground hum. This was a feature specific to the big knob.

I have been looking into acquiring one of these for a cover band I am FOH for. They do mostly small venues with occassional medium size venues. There are 9 instruments, 6 vocals, and one drum kit requiring 9 mics at large venues. Max board inputs would be 24. Minimum (at small venues) is 10. There are 3 vocal leads which change based on the song. Using this would be so much better than trying to condense down into the an mg16 and mg20 the band owns lol
