One of the greatest live performances of all time. Dave is an absolute animal in this.

Everyone praises the "Mendez-Akerfeldt-Lindgren-Lopez" lineup as Opeth's best, and it is excellent, but this lineup here with Axe, Svalberg and Akesson is golden as well

In Absentia was a pivotal album for them. But they refined their sound more on Deadwing. it just feels more concise and dynamic. you could tell they really were starting to perfect their craft, and the next album was proof of that.

I stumbled across this through Michael Palmisaro. I’m a Jam Band guy not a metal guy, but this is freakin nails!

I still remember the first time I listened to the entirety of "In Absentia" on headphones while laying in bed, years ago. I remember the sheer journey I was being take on. I remember the beautiful production on the album where so many moments were so beautifully recorded and engineered. Every little atmospheric nuance, of which Barbieri is a huge part. The sublime guitarwork by Steven Wilson, a man who by his own estimation is not a great guitarist; but manages to make his guitar absolutely crunch and sing. It's such a dark album lyrically and while it has it's dark moments musically, it's also book-ended with such beauty and at times; positive joyousness. A really precious and special album in my memory and my collection.

When I try to describe PT to a new Non-Tree'd person, it's difficult. I do this: "Do you remember your mother stroking your forehead and hair when you were ill as a small child, blissfully feeling secure and loved? Well PT does this: In a jaggedly precise 7/4 heartbeat, a clap of thunder and hail storm suddenly peels against the window and all hell breaks loose for twenty seconds. Just as you think it will collapse the house, the hail slows to a soft rain. Now your mother resumes with her soft voice and reassures you into peaceful slumber, still stroking your hair and forehead. When you awake the next morning, she's left you, for how long you don't quite know. PT in a nutshell. OR The Spawn of Tool, Pink Floyd and Steve Morse.

Still my favourite album. Never got to see the band live the first time around, but finally put that right on the Closure/Continuation tour. Well worth the years and years I had to wait.

This Warsaw goes to 10 and then takes it to 11. When Dave breaks into that massive groove, somehow going even harder than he was before, Josh and Jones both soloing their asses off over it; that’s a one-of-a-kind moment right there. Then flawlessly shooting back into the Am section. So intense!

I was laughed at back in my NWOBHM days, because I also liked bands like Jethro Tull, Barclay James Harvest etc. Bollox to ‘em, Tull’s album ‘Stand Up’ is a top class piece of art. ‘Once Again’ by Barclay James Harvest is another class piece of prog rock. This band are creators of pieces of art like those masters of yore. I’ve always loved their blend of feather and sword through the face musical approach. The new album sounds great as well, and heard those couple of songs on here….looking good for another classic
