My partner refers to all these things coming from Temu as "factory to landfill". I'm about where you are on free trade and I don't think we see the rise in global living standards in the last 30 years without it, but in addition to the economic implications we're just drowning in garbage now. To compete on price even domestic manufacturers, when they can compete at all, have to drastically cut quality. No one's winning in that arrangement.

Mixing up unrelated topics - like ethical manufacturing and custom duties - doesn't help to solve issues, but rather makes them more confusing. I myself don't like the concept of taxes at all, so several taxes less, the better. Ok, I can bear with some common costs like educational system, army, science, and that we should somehow distribute this burden among citizens. So when we have a system where who earns more or has more property, pays more taxes - ok, can be like that. But what's the actual reasoning for the state to just collect money from people buying goods from abroad? That's what I don't get.

I am proud to say, I am Temu-free. -My only purchase from Temu ended up being a far lower-quality knockoff of a cleaning device, after that I looked into Temu and decided to stay away from it. (I also then bought the product from its original seller and it works quite well.)

Leave things where they are at, except commercial transactions, which could be lowered to $5. Once it is no longer part of "any other situation" things become clear. Domestic and local small businesses need to be able to compete with overseas sales, while abiding by laws and regulations that may not apply elsewhere. Part of the reason low income areas are low income, is because there isn't as much demand for labor, suppressing wages and financial growth. The average entrepreneur has very little chance of competing with no labor, environmental, or other restrictions on any product under $800.

De minimis in Norway is now 0 it was like $30-$50 (300Kr-500Kr) but everyone kept mass importing from chinese web stores in adition, you'll pay another $15 (or more) if the store doesn't do the taxes in the purchase

Thanks for this video. I've seen the Mr. Rogers hearing clip several times, and each time the Senator is made out to be the villain. So it was refreshing to see that he was actually of the same mind of Mr. Rogers. Explains why he was so quick to approve the $20 million budget.

7:18 notably, Canada Post charges a flat 9.95 CAD for postal system import brokerage fees, while private companies like UPS, FedEx, DHL, and others charge rates in increasing amounts depending on both the value and taxable nature of the goods that are imported through the commercial stream. If you know what you’re doing you can file your own paperwork with the CBSA and sidestep commercial import clearance or you can get a professional customs broker to do it for you for less than, say, UPS.

This isn't a China problem, or even a drop shipper problem. This is a retailer problem. People only buy low cost goods because they do not understand the value proposition of the ethical source and sustainably made goods available in retail stores. Retailers for too long did not have to compete, they were the gate keepers of everything we coveted. As such they became fat. They reduced real wages to staff, not keeping pace with inflation, they reduced value to customers by raising prices, lowering headcounts and consolidating mum and pop stores into big box retail. For the consumer the big box experience provides no value over buying cheap goods online. We're we to bring back true retail, you wouldn't need to convince people to come back. If they were getting exceptional customer services, backed by world class after sales care, and advise that went beyond what they could Google, they would pay. Not everyone, but a lot of people. More than a good bargain, people want a simple, hassle free, retail experience.

Lysenko wasn't wrong, but his method would likely take centuries if not millennia. It requires the right mutation to show up, and for it to be in a seed that is saved for the next year. Selective breeding increases the odds so that it just takes decades. Modern genetic modification drops that to years.

I think a reasonable compromise would be to lower the de minimis threshold for Chinese products (along with other countries that fail to uphold fair labor standards) back down to $10.00 or $20.00 while keeping it at $800.00 everywhere else. Our allies and good actor countries shouldn’t be burdened with a stricter de minimis bar because another country isn’t playing by the rules.

how is your shein sweater different from the one you could have picked up at the local mole? Except the price of course. BTW, since when do the customs investigate what labour was used for the items? At best they check the paperwork

the only people who don't like deminimus are people who like to make business of reselling you the same cheap items from china with a 100% markup, which you otherwise could have bought yourself for the actual manufacturing cost of the items, instead of subsidizing importers who do not add any value.
@JohnInnocentSmyth
@JohnInnocentSmyth 2 күн бұрын
you say: "consumer habits advancing in unexpected ways". translation: people like to buy a 100 dollar item from china without being hassled with 25% import duty and having to clear the packet through the customs, instead of buying the same item for 200 dollars from a US based reseller. Really unexpected. quickly close this loophole, or people will buy things for cheap.

I think he gets to the real point at the end. If you're "shopping like a billionaire" it's not because you didn't pay a tax. It's because you ARE a billionaire compared to the people who actually made it. That's horrific. If you're looking around you and wondering why there are so many people who struggle to afford necessities, it's because when you buy products made by people who aren't paid enough to live - or aren't paid at all - you're forcing everyone around you to compete with those people who aren't paid enough to live or are aren't paid at all. It sucks if not being evil means you can't afford a drone or a sweater vest or lipstick, but also, fuck your drone and your sweater vest and your lipstick. What's at stake is the ability of the average person to acquire necessities, and that requires us to only buy products made by people who are paid enough to acquire necessities

I don't like the idea that my products are made with exploited foreign labor, but I also don't like the idea that my amazon deliveries are fulfilled by means of exploited domestic labor. And at the end of the day, neither of these are really my problem to solve. I've got a family to feed, clothe, and shelter and the economy is garbage. More wealth is in the hands of a lower percentage of people now than it pre-French Revolution. Am I advocating for the guillotine? No. But revoking or reducing de minimis is going to HURT people like you and me while HELPING people like Bezos, Musk, and Buffet. And entire logistics industry will be gutted, our highly import-reliant consumer culture will be gutted, and the cost will be hundreds of millions of Americans being stretched even thinner financially speaking all in the name of patriotism while the same small number of conglomerates get even richer. No thank you.

The other thing that helps companies like Temu, Aliexpress and other big ship from china sellers (including drop shippers). China is still (in the eyes of the Universal Postal Union) a 3rd world country and as such benefit from more favourable shipping rates with postal services. here in the UK the shipping from china is quite often less... than the shipping from the UK for a item.

Why arent duties applied progressively? Instead of having a arbitrary threshold the percentage of duties owed would raise at certain values, much like income tax. The lowest bracket could be very cheap as not to greatly raise prices on the kind of cheap stuff that’s under de minimus, but not keep it totally free either
