So these are Chincoteague Ponies, they are the native wild pony of Assateague Island. And what you were watching here were two stallions fighting. In horse society, there is a dominant male (if domesticated, a gelding) and a dominant female. In the wild, there is one stallion (uncastrated male), his lead mare (female), his other mares and their foals (baby horse). And sometimes, rogue stallions called bachelor stallions will show up and try to take over the herd. The herd stallion will then fight against the bachelor and if the leader wins, the bachelor has to leave. But if the rival stallion wins, the leader has to leave and give up his rank. The bachelor will then take over and proceed to kill the former herd leader's foals and mate with the mares. So, in this video, the pinto (brown and white) pony is the leader of this herd of ponies while the bay (brown coat with black mane) pony is a rival stallion. So what happened was the leader saw him, ran over to him and started pawing, telling him, "Hey man, this is my herd and these are my mares. You need to back off." And most of the time, the rival stallions won't back down which this one didn't. He pinned his ears and lunged at him on his hind legs. The leader pinned his ears and he reared up on both hind legs also, fighting for his rank and protecting his herd. It happens all the time in the wild, so this isn't anything out of the ordinary. They'll sort things out themselves.

It's the natural order of things with herd animals. Humans passing by have no idea what's going on. Would they interupt a group of teenagers or young men in their neighborhood? Like it or not fighting is normal and keeps the herd healthy
