To the people having a go because they just "stood and watched": what exactly did you want them to do?? They are wild stallions! You should never intervene a horse fight, it can easily turn into a fatal affair for you. Not to mention that in many places it is illegal to bother wild horses for your own safety. Please educate yourself before leaving hate comments. I wouldn't even step in if one of my geldings was having a fight with another - they have a social structure that needs to be sorted out by themselves, let them do so.

Honk a car horn if they're in a vehicle. Probably won't work but I'd have to try because I've seen some bad ones. Other than that, stay out the way. If it did work, they'd probably just lock up in a few minutes again anyway. I'd try with noise just because I don't want to see any living thing in pain, but I'd also be worried that it could cause one to run and the other to attack as a result. As it is, it probably ended better naturally.

Alison Gilliland Since the alternative name is Assateague Horse... pretty self-explanatory. The breed is phenotypically horse. The smaller stature of the feral animals is due to poor nutrition from salt marsh plants. Animals from the breed which receive proper nutrition grow to a height of more than 14 hands which means they are indeed... HORSES.
@beachedpawsphotography87828 жыл бұрын
+Steven C Actually they have very good nutrition. Their stomachs look bloated due to them drinking brackish water. There are some of the ponies that are 17-20 hands in the back bay areas.
@Call_Me_Echelon8 жыл бұрын
beached paws Their midsections grew plump and round because they became like camels, drinking twice as much water as the typical horse to offset their salt intake. This causes them to appear fat. Their smaller stature however, is in fact due to the nutrient-poor diet of marsh grass. When they are domesticated and are provided with proper nutrition then they grow taller. Ponies on Assateague have a diet that consists mainly of cordgrass, a coarse grass that grows in salt marshes, which makes up around 80 percent of their food. It is nutrient poor and leads to them growing smaller than back bay horses which eat grasses from more nutrient rich soils. Back bay horses don't need to supplement their diet with vegetation such as rose hips, bayberry, greenbriar, American beach grass, seaweed and poison ivy as much as the Assateague Horses do.
@Call_Me_Echelon8 жыл бұрын
beached paws That's excellent.. Now show me where I said cord grass had anything to do with their stomachs. And I have seen them, multiple times. And I've studied barrier Island vegetation along the east coast and learned quite a bit about the horses during my time in Assateague and Chincoteague.

+521LakeStreet I wouldn't allow it if I was there. I used to Supervise a horse ranch and had to break up horse fights all the time cause I didn't want to see any of them get hurt. They always respected me cause they knew what I was doing (this matters in a horse's mind cause they only understand one thing when it comes to respect: dominance). One mare even died cause she was kicked so hard by another mare that it caved her ribs in. It broke my heart when she died cause she was such a sweet mare. I even socialized studs, so that they could be stalled next to each other without fighting. The owner couldn't believe his eyes and to this day he still denies that I was a great animal handler and horse trainer. I learned a lot of professional horse training techniques from some of my employees who were basically cowboys in Mexico. They think the American way of training horses is wrong because Americans don't socialize studs, but they do in Mexico.

I'm from the area of Assateague, live 20 minutes from it. Some interesting facts, the ponies are actually horses, not ponies. They're "fat" and short because of the salt water in their diet, it makes them bloated and stunts their growth. The myth they like to tell tourists is a Spanish ship sunk off the coast and horses swam to the island and populated it. Truth in actuality is that there was a "fence tax" so farmers let their horses run free on the island since they couldn't go anywhere else. But after several decades they are true wild horses and cared for by DNR, vaccinated and health checks every year before the population is cut down by sending some over (via the famous pony swim) to Chincoteague to be auctioned off as "pets" or what have you or released onto Chincoteague island if the person buying the horse so chooses.

Well... technically they are ponies if they're under the height requirements. Ponies and horses are the same thing, the difference is in height.
@Cat-ke2np2 жыл бұрын
@@katvloom6542 There are actually more differences then just height between horses and ponies. They have a slower metabolic rate, often keeping weight on more easily than horses (this can lead to health issues such as founder). Ponies have less refined features with a more stocky build. This is why we have miniature horses, a different breed to miniature ponies. Height is not the only determining factor.
@brendacarlton482 жыл бұрын
@@Cat-ke2np If you delve deep enough into the Miniature Horse Registry you will see the name "Bond" appear. The Bonds raised English Shetland ponies (which are smaller and stockier than American) so there is pony blood in miniature horses. The only true minis are Falabellas.

@@joannleichliter4308 I've heard actual deaths are relatively rare though? IDK I grew up visiting horses at my uncle's farm but he never had uncut stallions for pretty obvious reasons(also he didn't breed them so what's the point of having a rummy stallion around lol), so I've never seen them fight. I've seen mares sort of bully each other for prime grazing spots though, but it wasn't like this. I could be wrong though, I know horses don't mess around when threatened.
@joannleichliter43083 жыл бұрын
@@seancutler6712 I know wild stallions drive young males (as they mature) out of the herd, and a struggle for posession of a band of wild mares is serious business. My guess is that among wild stallions, a direct killing is fairly rare, but if the fight is prolonged, the losing stallion is in danger of dying from lingering injury, infection or predation.

Assateague horses live very close to population and are rounded up every year so foals can be auctioned off. This is to control the population and keep the island from being worn down. These horses are having a dominance scuffle. If one stallion tries to steal a mare from another's herd, a fight will break out. Fights usually end in only minor, if any injuries. You would not be able to break up a fight with horses unless you had a whip or something large and scary, and that would only work with well trained horses. If you did manage to break wild horses up, they would fight again later. It's best to let them figure it out.

Let me explain: The paint came from his herd after seeing an intruder (the bay) The bay is a bachelor stallion looking for a herd to take care of after leaving his own herd. The paint notices his body language and moves past his own herd to duel the bachelor stallion. The duel was based off of who gets to take care of the herd that the paint was originally taking care of. Who know who won but: If the paint won, he would’ve gotten to keep his mares and foals and the rest of the herd If the bay won, he would’ve taken the herd over for himself, leaving the paint to find his own herd of bachelor stallions.
@truthofthematter94092 жыл бұрын
Exactly! This is how it goes and happens. The herd wants the strongest leader possible so if the bay won then he'd be the strongest until another stallion out wits and beats him out. It's part of their natural life

My personal opinion is that they're the coolest. But they're not everyone's cup of tea. They're cool animals, and super super weird once you learn about them. The equids family which is horses, zebras, mules, donkeys, and hinnies, closests relatives are rhinos and tapirs. Horses cannot breathe through their mouths, and can only achieve REM sleep lying down, amd they also get about 15-30 mins of sleep a day. I could go on and on with the random horse facts.

"they're just standing there!" what do you want them to do, get in the middle of it? honk? try to scare them apart? as a horsewoman I know that would just make the horses get spooked and it would get even worse, they're stallions. they want to protect their herds, so they could attack the people. I think you did the right thing, stayed calm and no shouting.

No one ever said it was abuse people love dressage idk why it’s like any other equestrian sport but they just do things different and do different things and do things in their own way but the horse just pawed it’s normal any horse will paw if they want it’s not dressage. Learn

Sarah Moran Actually, technically the "wild" ponies of Assateague Island are feral, along with nearly all "wild" horses, since they are descended from domesticated animals. I believe the only truly wild breed of horse left in the world is the Przewalski's Horse.

This is what uncastrated male horses naturally do - most domesticated horses are gelded and then they happily coexist with males and females alike- it really makes you think the world would be a much more peaceful place if similar practice was in place for humans - I am mostly kidding but it really does make you think..
