In waters known fir sharks you really need to be on a swivel.....believe it's still safe but have to be aware of surroundings at all times.....in blink of an eye shit can get hairy It's the shark you don't see that is the bigger problem....if they let you spot them they are curious, nit to say they won't be interested but they let you see them which isn't what they do when hunting typically.... Still spooky nevertheless

As a spearfisherman myself, I'm more worried about idiots in speedboats that ignore my buoy and whizz close by at full throttle, than a shark encounter.

Good presentation, it really captured the terrifying aspects of spearfishing off the Cape (or any Great White-infested waters for that matter). Weird how it almost came to a stop while it was eyeing you, and how fast it departed when it moved on, either because it detected the splashes of seals entering the water nearby or, God forbid, a really, really big Great White about to enter the scene! Cheers.

more scarred of the smaller ones they the inquisitive ones that try and bite you big ones seem to be much more at ease most of the time as if they know what you are not saying they wont swallow your ass just seems they are way more relaxed.

Ok so you already know the sharks are there, but still you have this need to see it yourself before hightailing it out of there. Not much logic there. The shark that will get you is the one you never see coming.
@seavoyant
@seavoyant Жыл бұрын
we dont know the sharks are there, we know theres a possibility of encountering a shark. When you swim in the ocean no matter where you are, theres a chance. You're entering its domain for sure. But after 6 years of spearfishing, this has been my only encounter with a white, and with all honesty, i hope its not the last. We still got fish, had a great dive on a beautiful day and had an incredible encounter with one of the planets apex predators.
@mybluebelly
@mybluebelly Жыл бұрын
@@seavoyant Trust me, the sharks are there...always. For every time you have an encounter, you can bet there has already been 9 times the shark "encountered" you first without you knowing. Shark infested waters is just that nothing more, nothing less. Please stop trying to twist the truth. Again there is no logic is the need to see the danger before making a rational decision and don`t swim in those waters. Well...of course unless you accept the risks involved....like ending up in the belly of a great white or passing away from massive blood loss. Here in Norway we don`t have any menacing sharks so your "no matter where" approach falls short of any logic. But people will remain people, and becoming part of the food chain seems to be on the up lately. Cheers i guess..

Very terrifying, but I think if I was ever out in the open ocean, I would just think of the fact that you're statistically more likely to die from a champagne cork than a shark lol
@Metal_junk
@Metal_junk Жыл бұрын
Because shark encounters are rare. If you determined the percentage of fatal/ injury resultant shark encounters to total shark encounters then it’s probably a lot more likely.
@bobjames1521
@bobjames1521 Жыл бұрын
That statistic is an average of the whole populations chances. It takes into account people currently sitting at a desk in an office and their near-0 chance of being killed by a shark. You bet that once you step into the ocean near sharks the chances change very suddenly.
