The Great White seemed fairly mellow....not showing signs of obvious change in swimming speed or posture and its moving slowly. Also, the shark is moderately sized for a GW. The thing that sucks though is that the diver seems to be on breathhold and not scuba. At some point you've got to get to the surface to take a breath....you better hope the boat is right there. I wouldn't feel comfortable floating on the surface with that shark looking up at me hidden in the depths...

@@anonanon8974 Ethics. Spearfishing with a dive tank is just too easy. You can easily go down and kill all the bigger fish in your area. If many people did that, most of the big species would be gone from the coastal areas very quickly (that is already the case in many places around the world). That is why it is forbidden in most countries (not all). There are other reasons as well, but I guess this is the main one.

Good presentation, it really captured the terrifying aspects of spearfishing off the Cape (or any Great White-infested waters for that matter). Weird how it almost came to a stop while it was eyeing you, and how fast it departed when it moved on, either because it detected the splashes of seals entering the water nearby or, God forbid, a really, really big Great White about to enter the scene! Cheers.

I will never, ever understand why people chose to go in great white shark inhabited waters. I know they’re beautiful creatures, a lot more mellow than the media suggests but why take the chance? I’m a scuba diver as well, but you’ll never catch me diving around SA or Aus/NZ. 😂

But the problem is that when a 20 foot 3000+ pound great white accidentally bites you, it still wont end well. Free diving in South Africa, Australia, California, etc is like the equivalent of skydiving without a parachute.

These encounters are rare, and even if you do encounter a big shark, the probability of it attacking you is very low, especially if the water is clear and you behave correctly. Even so, I know I would personally not be able to relax in a place that I know have big white sharks around...

@@anonanon8974 Keep calm, don't make abrupt movements, keep an eye contact with the shark and slowly back away to shallow waters. 99% of the time, you will be fine. If an attack is imminent, then try to fight back with anything that can be used as a weapon (use your fists if you don't have anything else), and aim for the eyes or the gills.

As weird as it sounds to some, the presence of sharks to me is a huge part of what draws us into the water. Not being the ontop of the foodchain like we are on land throughout our daily lives, adds a thrilling dimension to the experience of spearfishing, vulnerability. A primal feeling that makes one feel alive. Something modern humans have lost touch of.

Because shark encounters are rare. If you determined the percentage of fatal/ injury resultant shark encounters to total shark encounters then it’s probably a lot more likely.

That statistic is an average of the whole populations chances. It takes into account people currently sitting at a desk in an office and their near-0 chance of being killed by a shark. You bet that once you step into the ocean near sharks the chances change very suddenly.
