Good video. I especially like how you said you don't need to empty the entire tank as I was looking to avoid that.

Great commentary and the part about smoothing the pipe end. WOW. I would never have thought of that. Thanks Dennis!

I bought and installed one expansion tank at home depot, the specifications indicated that the manufacturer recommended to strap the E.T. hanged, to the ceiling I guess, Is it really recommended to strap it to the ceiling?

thanks for the video, I was looking into installing an expansion tank mostly because when I close a faucet I hear the pipis banging. Sadly my water heater is installed directly soldered to copper pipes, no flexible. I will need to hire a plumber to put a T in there, or may be I can install it somewhere else.

For replacement purposes is fine ,remember to add a expansion tank suck is very important,even was not installed previously,

This is one of the very best videos (and clear explanation) of a job most plumbers would say you need a professional. If someone has basic to intermediate skills, this video should encourage a homeowner to DIY this project. Thanks!

I agree. Just remember to turn off the water supply on the "cold" side and if you have an electric water heater turn off the breaker *first*

" By law " 😮 there's no law to install or not install the expansion tank , it is the customer choice . You may have to edit what you said... We have a water heater thats been in the house for over 25 years ,nothing wrong with it , thanks God
@jjann54321
@jjann54321 Ай бұрын
@starinthesky1520 I think we he said "by law" he meant "by code" which is many jurisdictions is it a requirement by code to have one. You may not go to jail, but you certainly won't pass inspection. Or, DYIers will do this on their own, there's a tank/pipe/fitting break (or leak) and the house is flooded and the insurance company asks "where's your expansion tank? who installed this hot water tank?" And the water damage claim in denied.

Not needed! No expansion tank for over 50 years and no problems! Just more government regulations bullshit that costs homeowners unnecessary $$$$$
@jjann54321
@jjann54321 Ай бұрын
@user-jo6ym7cr6z Um... Well for those people that live in modern houses (or re-pipes) with closed-circuit water systems, they are needed and in many jurisdictions required by code (or an approved pressure relief mechanism). There's no reason NOT to have one unless you're cheap or think that when water is heated, and it expands and causes an increase in pressure that physics/hydrodynamics/heat transfer are some kind of government conspiracy or over-regulation. Those "government regulations" are in place to protect the homeowner from unnecessary damages and expenses due to water line over-pressurization in their home. And yelling at your screen won't make your opinion less wrong, sorry.

Replacing the heat exchanger involves unscrewing hundreds of screws, and it's frustrating to see such poor design from big companies like Rinnai, Noritz, and Navien. I lived in Taiwan for over ten years, where my no-name tankless water heater required no maintenance and worked flawlessly straight from the pipe. However, after just five years in Canada, my Noritz unit, despite being used with a water softener, is already leaking. It's disappointing that these renowned brands are selling such poorly designed products.

Instead of using WD-40 to lubricate the fastener on the water lines, I use food-grade silicon grease. It serves the same purpose but won't contaminate the potable water system.

I've read that you don't need an expansion tank if there is no back flow preventer., ie. not a closed system. This video seems to show an open system. The video does not show a back flow preventer. What is the correct deal? Or is this video just a demo on installation?
@jjann54321
@jjann54321 Ай бұрын
You are correct, if the house is not a closed system it is not required by code (or an approved pressure relief system is in place). Usually the back flow preventer is in-between the water meter and where the water main ties into the house. I didn't see him show that in the video but most modern (2000's and later [including re-pipes]) houses/dwellings are closed circuit. There's no reason not to have one (other than cost savings) even if you aren't required to have one by code. I hope that helps.

It is a great video. I'm having a leak and error code 51 was displaying on the remote. I opened up and saw leaks. I can't tell whether it is from the heat exchanger or manifold plate. Is there a way I can tell just by looking?

Plumber was at my home changing out a gunky galvanized pipe related to something else, and put up a new expansion tank while he was here. But, he didn't check the water pressure of the house (I have that in writing) and over-pressured it to 70psi. My house water pressure is 50psi. He also turned up the heat really hot, whereas I keep it at the red line just above warm. The day after he placed it, my water heater started leaking from the bottom. I reduced the pressure and temperature and turned off the hot water valve, and it's still leaking. My water heater is 20 years old, well maintained, and without any problems until this. So, I think the additional pressure wrecked my water heater. I'm trying to figure out if this was ignorance or maliciousness. I would appreciate any input.

The expansion tank pressure had no effect in this given situation. The expansion tank pressure does not apply outwards, the bladder in the expansion tank contracts internally when water expansion is introduced to it, this is why the pressure of the water in the pipes and the bladder need to match. It's coincident that your water heater leaked. 20 years is very old, no wonder it's leaking.

I spent 6 hours researching if I can easily replace my Zurn double Union with a Watts or Acme since my local hardware stores carry more of those and they're much cheaper. Found your video at random and found the answer to my question. I'm staying with Zurn. Big hassle was prevented. Thank you very much. If only Zurn rebuild kits were cheaper and individual pieces like the rubber washers were easier to find.

What's the point of this anyway? I had a water heater for 20 years. Work fine and now this is required. Heck my parents never even had one. So what's the point? Is this so that local entities can make more money? 😐
