I said 15/20 years ago when I first heard Guthrie Govan play when he worked for the magazine “Guitar Techniques” and I said he would one day be recognised as the phenomenon that he is. I’ll never forget this, I emailed Matthias IA Eklundh about him and he at the time said he never heard of him! The rest is history 🎸 I one day dreamed he’d play in the G3 set up. It’s only recently I’ve got back into my guitar playing and to see that this has came to fruition is unbelievable. In my opinion Guthrie is the best guitarist out of all 3 here, by a mile.

Making beats is the only thing I can do. I cannot play any instruments. Which means I won’t be anywhere close to the level these two cats are on. Seeing how far into they are makes me want to quit music altogether

Pat is pretty much repeating what every great Jazz player is saying. Phil Woods once told me in a personal conversation after a masterclass: “There’s too much Jazz education and not enough Jazz. If you truly want to get better, come play with me and my students sometime. Then, go play with people who are better than me. After that, go play with people who you know aren’t as good as you. You know why? Because they will ask you the questions you dont want to answer with music Theory. They will help you reinforce the Theories you have learned and stolen from others. It is this repetitive nature, which requires total discipline to master, that will make you an accomplished player”. Needless to say, i was schooled

I think secrets to improvisation remain secret at least in this video! If you're an expert of something you don't need a long lengthily talk, you will be able to explain it in a simple term. To me the secret of improvisation as to be able to handle chord changes or the Bebop language is emphasizing chord tone on strong beat aka one and three the rest are encapsulation. That means you need to be able to play arpeggio in every chord and identify all the chord tones root 3 5 7.
