I think it's important to note that the aged pension is a safety net for Australians that need it. It will only cover a minimum standard of living. A healthy super balance at retirement is what we should all be aiming for if we have the means to achieve it. It's mind boggling whenever I hear or read about someone trying to dwindle down their assets and super (which might have been going well) before retiring, just so that they can qualify for a full age pension.

Some numbers would be beneficial. Too high level. If you want to retire as a couple at age 63 spending $90k pa, how much superannuation is ideal to achieve that for the next 30 years? We own our own home debt-free.

Depends what the super is invested in. Just with ASX investments and franking credits, $90kpa going up with inflation, you’d need $1.8m and it would never run out, you’d not touch the capital. Most people spend more in first 10 years and less in last 10 years. And having 1.5-2 years living expenses in a high yield bank account as an emergency fund is also a good idea. If you were to downsize your home and put the difference into super, you can do catch up concessional contributions plus then non concessional contributions up to $330k in 1 year (as long as you don’t put more non concessional contributions in for the next 2 years). Super funds have a financial planning hotline, plus for all decisions, even if an advisor or mortgage broker thinks it’s a good idea, ALWAYS speak to your accountant, because super rules are complicated and the consequence is paying more tax than you need to simply because of a paperwork mistake Rules of thumb for ASX based LICs/ETF from dividends: 5% (x $90k by 20 = $1.8m for nest egg). Rules for US or all world based ETFs: 4% (x $90k by 25= $2.25m nest egg required)

I retired at age 53, so I am in my early 60s. Many of them resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if it wasn't necessary. I considered the phases of my life. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." In my instance, I departed the nation after retiring and currently reside in Latin America. It made it possible for me to appreciate my new surroundings while escaping all the bad things that were going on in America. Nobody that I know of regrets retiring has yet to come to me.

Nice way to retire. For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My wife and I both spent same number of years in the civil service, she invested through a wealth manager and myself through the 401k. We both still earning after our retirement fund has grown way more than it would have with just the 401(k). Haha.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than a million dollars by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

I think this is something I should do, but I've been stalling for a long time now. I don't really know which firm to work with; I feel they are all the same but it seems you’ve got it all worked out with the firm you work with so i surely wouldn’t mind a recommendation.

I definitely share your sentiment about these firms. Finding financial advisors like Kathie Daisy Bosco who can assist you shape your portfolio would be a very creative option. There will be difficult times ahead, and prudent personal money management will be essential to navigating them.

It is all about to crash, the QFS is here and pensions are not needed, ALL politicians are about to be arrested by the military for crimes that are massive, their corrupt maritime law will be gone and common law is here to stay. Everyone will have lots of money they stole from us for generations. Not long now, The Great Awakening is Imminent....

i didn't really understand having scenarios may of worked better. it seems to be that if you we ok with money and gathered assets throughout your life you get nothing.... again. i assume most people have super that are watching this and a few investments (A couple, combine assets $470,000) is very little in assets. Am i missing something

These guys wouldn't know, they will be the only one being the big winners, living in bigger and bigger houses every year. Just invest in a low cost index fund. These people are just repeating what the parrots are repeating in the local pet shop. Talking AI now, really.

That was very informative, thank you. However, I wish you would have added something on CryptoCurrency. Every broadcaster always mentions, shares, cash, assets etc... but no one specifically mentions crypto. Is this something that must be declared for pension eligibility? Could you pls confirm... thanks

Hi! We frequently monitor the growth in cryptocurrencies and their behaviour. However, at this point, we have no plans to invest in bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. As a super fund, we overwhelmingly invest in real and financial assets that generate reliable streams of income - dividends, interest, rent etc. - that can be accrued and reinvested on behalf of our members. At this stage of their development, cryptocurrencies are still highly speculative assets that are almost impossible to value in any fundamental sense and are traded on markets that are far from transparent. For further information on how Australian Retirement Trust invests, our Investment Reports provide a regular update on the economy and the market, along with the management and performance of our investment options: www.australianretirementtrust.com.au/investments/performance/reports Henri @ ART :)

Hi Ruth and Josh, is it possible to transfer your whole super to another fund and if so would it be worth it to do so. My wife and myself are about 6 months from retiring and we both have a different fund, I spoke to my super fund about when I put my super into pension phase and what would the fee’ be , I was told a fee of 0.8% would be applied for each year. Is this fee normal and would we better to to have one super fund to avoid a fee, cheers Bobby

Johnny Averages gonna rely on his Super. Maybe they don't have shares properties etc. That's just cream on top. So if you just got super how much do you need to retire in a reasonable lifestyle without counting every penny
