Tamasaburo gave up his vegan diet in order to improve his voice for this role as Yang Guifei. He's 60 during the time of this report. Such commitment to his art!

She (the character) is an Oiran. She is wearing a long obi that falls down her front, Tayuu wore their obi tied in a heart-shaped knot, their hairstyles are also different.

You see before you Bando Tamasaburo V, b. 1950. He is probably the greatest onnagata that has ever lived. I had the extreme honor of seeing him perform twice in NYC and actually meet him. It changed my life forever. His performance will shake you to the core of your soul and leave you wondering if your own humanity is genuine enough. There are no words, absolutely nothing in the world to compare to this experience.

Tamasaburo was not a Geisha... XDD And it would be hard for a foreign, let alone locals, even... a hard process anyway...and years and years are needed...

You know... there doesn't seem to be much change the dancer's facial expression, yet there's so much emotion shown in the subtle things the dancer does. It's rather nice.

Breathtakingly lovely. But I'd far rather have translations and comments under image to be read by viewer instead of having it on top of music. or, alternativelym synopsis in English before the performance.

it was actually, in one of the interview videos it states that neither women nor beautiful young men were allowed to perform in Kabuki as it was often used to exploit them. So the only ones able to play women in kabuki theater were the older men, thus onnagata were born. Not to say it happened in every kabuki theater, but often enough that they had to make a law to prevent it from continuing. And a prostitute in the pleasure quaters was generally well taught in the arts so it wasn't all sex.

What a beautiful love song this is. Dame Kiri sings with such feeling. Much, much better in my humble opinion than Love Never Dies. Why on earth was it changed?

I wonder how the audience knows what's happening...the video narrator said something about another narrator on stage but it doesn't seem like he's speaking Japanese. Unless everyone has already read the story...which is possible.

Wait...while I know that there aren't any women in Kabuki, I thought that was only in previous times. So the person on stage is actually a man as well? (if so, he plays the role well, xD! I'd kill to be as graceful as that, especially at the parts where "she" bends her knees and still has to keep her back straight. I know mine would buckle in an instant).
