Retired ‘cellist here. This is so gorgeous. Had the privilege of playing it twice as section player then once as Principal. It’s more difficult than it sounds, or looks. Emotional restraint is always tricky.

The playing, as one would expect, is excellent in every respect. However, some of the tempo choices in the Beethoven seem a bit slow, IMHO.. As a point of reference, check out the Paavo Jarvi interpretation with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie of Bremen.

I love how the second flute is sitting there holding his breath hoping the first flute doesn't have a heart attack and then he has to take over that beastly solo.

Maestro Schwarz conducts the finest orchestra I've ever heard. His 1st horn player often brings me to tears. All play with such moving musicianship. Thank you for these grand posts.

I've played this beautiful piece on the piano many times over the years, yet this beautiful orchestration has shown even more the haunting and uniquely mystical world of Brahms.

We heard the great Cerminaro play the Strauss concerto # 1 w/the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie hall in 1971. Spectacular! An interesting lecture, but the acoustic sounds like the camera has a 3rd rate microphone---it's missing his far richer tone. Thanks for capturing this history. Mr. C's thinking is so honest and very helpful to our horn students. Fine post!

All these comments here of cello being easy…here’s what’s easy: picking up a tuned guitar and strumming across the open strings and producing a full, rich beautiful sound. Here’s what’s easy: someone shows you where to place your fingers on C E G, left hand and right hand, on a keyboard, and you press and make a full, rich, beautiful sound. There is NO COROLLARY with the cello. None. You might try for 2 years before you can play a beautiful passage. Or maybe 5 years. Anyone who says otherwise is…well I’ll just say “uninformed”. Even winds, you press a key, there is the note. Cello? Nope. Go up the fingerboard and hmm, the notes get closer and closer together, but where? It’s a blank slate. Good luck to people who think it’s easy. Post a recording of yourself and let the world decide.

I am convinced that Beethoven found the perfect balance of how long that oboe solo should be, but when I hear it, I would like it to be longer. Maybe that just confirms that Beethoven knew exectly what he was doing. :)
