I'm not a carver (but I wouldn't mind being one), but watching you slice off shavings with chisels so sharp they're like a hot knife through butter just makes me happy. :D

You did a wonderful job on the stocking and bear. Your knives are so super sharp, you go through that Basswood like butter. I have watched your video on sharpening, and tho my knives and gouges are sharp, they aren't as sharp as yours it seems. I'll keep trying to get better tho. Thanks for your natural way of sharing what you are doing and thinking... Thanks for sharing.. Mellanie from Pennsylvania

Thanks for the video. Could propably try to carve something related to christmas time... I have carved some small items like a autumn leaves on small piece of wood. Attempted also carving small figurines from Moomin characters (Moominpappa).

I'm glad to see that you've been back for almost a year! I've been inspired a lot by your techniques since I started almost 4 years ago! But I only practiced intermittently, but this year is when I'm really taking off! But I still have a lot of learning to do and I know that it will always be like this and that's good! But one question remains... Why use gouges or eyefish please? Thx !!!
@marymay1553 күн бұрын
I like the larger gouges because it is easier to control and much safer than the smaller ones because I hold them with both hands. Not sure what "eyefish" means? Maybe you mean fishtails? i like them because the fit into corners nicely.
@SoeCarpeDiem3 күн бұрын
@@marymay155 Thanks, I mostly use straight or angled chisels. But maybe I need to get more comfortable with gouges?! Thx!

If i may be so bold, it is a pleasure watching you work. Question, when you see a block of wood, does your mind start thinking of a pattern for it because of the grain? Recommendation please, palm chisels or straight chisels?
@marymay15525 күн бұрын
Sometimes I do. But I usually don't have the option. When I'm doing my own sculptural design where the design evolves as I carve, then that is definitely something considered. Often, though, I have a set pattern and simply have to make the design work with whatever wood I have available.

So you need to use the stones along with a strop and not the strop alone.
@marymay15525 күн бұрын
Yes. The strop will not take the metal down enough when it really needs aggressive sharpening.

For your first set of gouges would you buy a "palm" or "straight" style set?
@marymay15525 күн бұрын
I would recommend straight gouges, as they are much safer because you hold them with both hands. Palm gouges are generally held with one hand, and you can easily cut yourself. I find more control with long-handled gouges.
