This is a livestream that I made for members of my Online Carving School (www.marymaycarving.com). I show how to carve an Amaryllis in 1 inch thick basswood. There are hundreds more lessons on my school. Enjoy!

Thank you! Yes, it is basswood. In Europe it is called Linden or Lime.

I learned much. You didn’t sharpen at all. Do you have a few of each gouge to move your work along?

Mary, soon I will need to apply a water based clear satin finish on a wooden knife with a carved handle I'm making in linden(the European one, I live in Italy). I have read that It absorbs a lot and because of that I risk blotchiness or unevenness. What do you advise me to do? Sealing first with shellac?
@marymay1557 ай бұрын
A coat of shellac should seal up the grain. Soft wood definitely will get blotchy. I would suggest testing it on another piece of wood to see how it absorbs. Sometimes it's difficult to predict.
