What' the heaviest thing you have to carry/lift doing this job?
@2thang2Ай бұрын
You mean in terms of instruments sets? Nothing much honestly, I would have to say probably just the instrument sets themselves. According to OSHA instruments sets are to be no heavier than 25 pounds. Of course it varies from place to place
@dthao227Ай бұрын
So its basically a Dish Washer job?
@2thang2Ай бұрын
Sterile processing is more than just a dish washer job. It involves the decontamination, sterilization, and maintenance of medical instruments and equipment used in healthcare settings. Sterile processing technicians play a critical role in ensuring that medical instruments are safe and ready for patient use. It requires specific knowledge of sterilization techniques, infection control, and proper handling of medical equipment. So it's a crucial and specialized role in healthcare that goes beyond just washing dishes 😊

Usually in scenarios like this they will look if they have that specific instrument in a peel pack. If for whatever reason they still can’t find it then they will open another set of the SAME set and use THAT instrument. Hope this helps

is it possible to work 4 10's with this job? I know that surgeons work a lot of those jobs- I wonder if you're able to get those type of shifts or if they are somewhat common or not.
@2thang22 ай бұрын
With this job? Yes absolutely! My coworker currently works 4 10’s and he says he loves his shift. Majority of hospitals are definitely capable of “creating” a shift for you as long as it is consistent and manageable by the department’s needs. Especially if the hospital is 24 hours.

@@2thang2 another question if you dont mind me asking I always read on reddit about how horrible the drama can be in those jobs... is it really as bad as everyone says? or is it just people venting and bitching on reddit all the time. I get drama at work isn't possible to fully avoid (I've worked a lot of food service)
@2thang22 ай бұрын
@@vaporhazy I would say that drama in sterile processing (or any job) is inevitable. It depends on your coworkers and how you handle the drama yourself. For me personally I like to be cool with everyone and treat everyone the same, meaning no favoritism or only talking to certain people. I talk to everyone, and I think it’s safe to say that my coworkers like me. We hangout outside from work, our kids play together and when we’re at work we joke around and help each other. So I don’t deal with any drama (at least for now lol) but yeah I would say if you do decide to come into sterile processing you should come out as friendly and you should be good. I’ve worked at 4 different hospitals and I always kept my same character and still no drama so I think it also depends on yourself as well. I hope this information is useful

@2thang22 ай бұрын
It was a Saturday when I was working in this video. Saturdays in this hospital would be perfect to train new techs and that’s a good question, Ive personally never encountered a situation where I needed help but I guess if I needed help I would call the manager who would be on call that weekend and depending on the situation they can come over and help or they could just help me through the phone.

thanks for the video! I'm making the jump from veterinary medicine to SP and I'm trying not to wig myself out about it. Vet med is pretty informal when it comes to reprocessing equipment, but it's an area I always took pride in. Getting to wrap the packs was a moment of solace for me. I'm about halfway through a prep course for the exam... it's a lot but I think I can do it. Out of curiosity, is this a field that tends to churn through a lot of staff? The turnover in vet med is astronomical- people come in bright eyed and bushy tailed, then two months later they're gone without a trace. You don't see many assistants or techs still working the floor past their 20s. Whether or not SP is the same won't have any bearing on my going into it, I'm just nosy.

That's awesome that you're making the transition to sterile processing. It's completely normal to feel a bit uncertain when starting something new, but I believe in you! It sounds like you had a lot of pride in reprocessing equipment in veterinary medicine, and that's a great mindset to bring with you. As for turnover in the field, it depends every workplace is different, I can tell you that sterile processing is a crucial part of healthcare, and skilled professionals are always in demand. It's a field where attention to detail and dedication are highly valued. So if you're passionate about it and willing to put in the effort, I'm confident you'll find success and fulfillment in your new career. Keep up the great work with your prep course for the exam! You got this!
