Thanks for the answer! I am a month into learning Irish flute (my wife gifted me a Doug Tipple flute) and I was given some exercises ti do and that I should aim for a reedy sound. Now I have an idea what to aim for

It's more a question of technique and the geometry of the flute instead of material.
@AllanTheBanjo18 сағат бұрын
I'm inclined to agree, I don't think the material makes much difference to a flute's tone as the body doesn't really vibrate much. Technique is probably the biggest factor. Interestingly, I have a cylindrical 8-key made from Cocus and it is much harder to get a 'dark' sound on that than on my (conical) Boosey Pratten (also cocus). But then the headjoints are also very different so I'm not sure what that proves!

I really wish I could learn to play a whistle. Do you offer classes?

You Don want a really cheep whistle, don't sound great but, I have a Tony Dixon and it's a older and brass and plays beautiful. A better one than this one ha's But I tried to get a Bb from Tony Dixon just months ago but, twice I was sent a miss marked A whistles. They were marked Bb, but were clearly A whistles and match perfectly the old A Tony Dixon. But if you could ever find a A whistle brass, older Tony Dixon model, then you have a gem. I have the miss mark A whistle that is aluminum and tuneable and it also sounds nice, better than this one but, not as nice and clear as the beautiful A brass Tony Dixon. They aren't really expensive, they are like €90.

The A whistle is my favourite to play!

Lovely! I love the sound of Lir. Sadly my A is noticeably out of tune but I got it used so I can hardly return it.
@Superjoel37Күн бұрын
You can just tune it by moving the mouth piece and checking with a tuner until it's in tune
@TremendouzКүн бұрын
@Superjoel37 To clarify, I meant relative tuning from one note to another, which is not something you can fix without doing something like taping a hole to flatten a certain note, or enlarging a hole to sharpen it, and the latter is very risky to do.

I bought the Optima Cobre whistle in D. It is definitely a nicer instrument than my $20-$50 whistles. I think it was around $120 plus shipping maybe another $20 or so. Fantastic copper whistle, it plays great and makes clear and quality tones with very little effort to blow into it, feels great, holes play great and in tune with itself very accurately.

The d ‘whistle’ is in the same key as the c classical flute. The whistle doesn’t have the c at the bottom.
