I’ve been working on these Scirocco’s since I was 17 years old, I’m 69 now. As I watch you all working on that 77. I see so many short cuts that will cost you later, not in money, but In break downs. I would never have you guys work on my Mk1’s. First mistake, the 100mm flanges are way better than the 90mm ones, 90mm always tend to shear off the flange bolts when they get lose, which they always do. It’s so easy to find 100mm axles rebuilt. Changing 90mm flanges to 100mm trans isn’t just like popping them on, the inside components can be different and flange collar length can be different also. Also I would never use that motor. The 1.8 JH motor is what you want in that car. That is a big difference in performance, especially with a Neuspeed cam. Get a Bentley manual for that car. You will learn allot. 🎉 PS not all 5 speed transmissions are close ratio, you have to research the code on them. Also the year’s between 1984 and 86 had self destructive trans. 1987 close ratio 5 spd model is the holly grail. 🎉

Innovation is happening fast with EVs because if history tells us anything, there are vast riches to be had for whoever comes up with the standards that EVs will rely on in the future. Look how long companies like Bosch have been milking fuel injection along? In the EV space, those staples dont exist, so new comers have a ton of space to bring something new and hope it sticks. Supercharger network is a good example, no charging network existed prior to that, or the plug standard. As a newcomer they invested and now have a robust network that everyone wants in on, and theres tons of money to be made.

This is a pretty good post. However, I don't know that the innovations that are happening get the average Americans wallet out of their pocket do they?
@sinks889 күн бұрын
I think its dead in a traditional art/craftsmanship meets necessity/function way - Innovation has been reduced to "tech" which is a non-physical enterprise. All innovations seems to be wrapped up in data and or energy. To me personally, that isn't innovation - so yes, its dead.
@fh4n9 күн бұрын
I agree. Ridiculous 0-60 numbers dont matter in a real life scenario. Whats the point of being the first at the next red light? Sure, noone wants to wobble forward in a 200D W115 anymore. Thats fair - but acceleration numbers under say 6secs 0-60 dont matter in the real world where traffic density increases and tarmac conditions are getting worse. Innovations like seatbelts, airbags, ABS, ESP etc. were invented to improve the car in terms of safety - those were real leaps forward to be a better car. Innovations nowadays are innovations for being a made off USP (0-60 numbers as an oldschool metric, bigger screens, etc.). The whole discussion between ice-cars and EVs is in my opinion the wrong direction. Sure EVs will someday be the greater part of the whole cake. Cheers from Germany

Had a 3.0L RSR,on Bosch Mechanical Injection,Rally & Raced. Did a Rally to a GP Meet on Road tyres,switched to Slicks for Porsche Cup,with 30 Porsche's.Came 6th or 7th,put the Road Tyres on and drove it 1800 kms Home. Can't do that,with a result today. Should never have sold it. Even at the huge price. Should have kept it. Had a succession of Porsche's since,including RS/CS 993 (Nearly as good,and won two 50th Porsche Anniversary Events,inc fastest in the Wet by 2.5 Seconds) 911 2.2, 911 2.7 RS, 997 Turbo,(Which I sold because there is No Feedback until you're well into 200 kph) and now at 77 years my 997 C2S Manual on Michelin Pilot PS4S,is precise,stops and is nearly as quick as anything over a 100 km loop. I also Raced for 56 years, including Lola Group C,so I have a rough idea.Should never have sold that RSR.....

One of the quarters a little wider than the other is pretty common on the early cars. Actually I think the quarters are ok but the torsion tube may be welded in a little off. My 69 car is like that.

In 1984 I bought a 1980 Scirocco S to drive while I was a student at Syracuse University and the super snowy city of Syracuse. I LOVED that car, my favorite car I owned. I drove through any weather conditions. I had Continental snow tires and the car dominated in snow! I miss those days, the fun and adventures. Great job and the rebirth of this Scirocco!

I LOVE MK1 SCIROCCO'S!!!! When I was born way back in August of '81.. I came home from the hospital in my parents 1980 Scirocco S....we had that car in the family for 15yrs...I learned how to drive in it right before my Dad sold it......when I think about it now 27yrs later, I should have asked to keep it 🤦♂️... and it would have been my 1st VW....instead of the '72 Super Beetle I bought 2yrs later IMHO....MK1 SCIROCCO'S 1975-1981 are the only Scirocco's to me.

We mainly bonded over vw’s ( him having a mk1 sicirocco and me a couple of mk1 golfs) I’ve always said since that I’d get a scirocco in his memory but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any reasonably priced ones available in the uk 😢 I wish we had the amount you guys have available in the US.
