I think its dead in a traditional art/craftsmanship meets necessity/function way - Innovation has been reduced to "tech" which is a non-physical enterprise. All innovations seems to be wrapped up in data and or energy. To me personally, that isn't innovation - so yes, its dead.

I agree. Ridiculous 0-60 numbers dont matter in a real life scenario. Whats the point of being the first at the next red light? Sure, noone wants to wobble forward in a 200D W115 anymore. Thats fair - but acceleration numbers under say 6secs 0-60 dont matter in the real world where traffic density increases and tarmac conditions are getting worse. Innovations like seatbelts, airbags, ABS, ESP etc. were invented to improve the car in terms of safety - those were real leaps forward to be a better car. Innovations nowadays are innovations for being a made off USP (0-60 numbers as an oldschool metric, bigger screens, etc.). The whole discussion between ice-cars and EVs is in my opinion the wrong direction. Sure EVs will someday be the greater part of the whole cake. Cheers from Germany

Innovation is happening fast with EVs because if history tells us anything, there are vast riches to be had for whoever comes up with the standards that EVs will rely on in the future. Look how long companies like Bosch have been milking fuel injection along? In the EV space, those staples dont exist, so new comers have a ton of space to bring something new and hope it sticks. Supercharger network is a good example, no charging network existed prior to that, or the plug standard. As a newcomer they invested and now have a robust network that everyone wants in on, and theres tons of money to be made.

This is a pretty good post. However, I don't know that the innovations that are happening get the average Americans wallet out of their pocket do they?
