The opus 135 quartet was a set work when I did A level music in 1987. I used to know it inside out, upside down & backwards lol. It's years since I listened to it, but it all came rushing back very quickly. It's magnificent.

One of the members of my string quartet described the Vivace movement as "unsafe at any speed" because of the crazy syncopation and other "simple" (crazy hard) rhythmic issues.

All music is composed before it is heard, so the fact that Beethoven couldn't hear when he composed this was probably not a handicap.

Passionate, moving, and beautiful! I can’t help but think that if Beethoven himself heard your expression of his sublime music he would have been very pleased.

Between this piece and the string quartet in C sharp Minor I really can't decide which is my favorite Beethoven. I would love to see them perform this live. I wish people knew just how much work goes into playing these incredibly difficult pieces perfectly like this.

Beautiful! Fun fact: Mahler lovingly gave a nod to Beethoven by borrowing the theme from the slow movement here (III Lento assai..., at about 11:00 into the video) for the sixth movement of his 3rd Symphony. Emphasis on the word 'lovingly'.

"“I have the A minor Quartet on the gramophone, and I find it quite inexhaustible to study. There is a sort of heavenly, or at least more than human gaiety, about some of his later things which one imagines might come to oneself as the fruit of reconciliation and relief after immense suffering; I should like to get something of that into verse before I die.” - T.S. Eliot

I used to live in a remote farm, we bred lambs and when visitors came to stay, the big leg of lamb appeared on the table. Once the visitors started chewing and delighting in the meat, conversation flagged, and something akin to what happens in this string quartet took place: an insane digging into the substance of the meal. I can feel each phrase as if it were a cannibal banquet...

Beautiful music. How did you pick the name? It is my daughter's name and a biblical name. Thanks again
@ArielQuartetАй бұрын
It was one of the names offered for our consideration when we started performing aged 16!
In this and the Op. 95, Gershon Gerchikov plays first violin while Alexandra Kazovsky plays other first violin. But in the Op. 132, she plays first and he plays other first. Is there some kind of system at work? It seems to work either way.

We’ve been switching since we started as 12yo kids, seemed natural at the time and we kept it!
