Beethovens last string quartet, luckily in Major. It was completed 1826, one year before he died. What a great way to end his chamber music composing, remembering that he at this time was completey deaf! And so to say just composing out of his memories of music. Ariel Quartet is playing this with full respect and control.

What is it about the Ariel Quartet and this particular quartet by Beethoven? I keep listening to it over and over again. First of all, the SOUND these four produce is massive yet tender. As for this music, is Beethoven saying goodbye to the world in the 3rd and 4th movements or accepting his fate that it must be that he too shall pass on? The music coming out of the syncopated, unison measure in the 2nd movement is spell-binding. He wrote for us who are the future he so often referenced. What a gift to this world!!!🎶🙏

The opus 135 quartet was a set work when I did A level music in 1987. I used to know it inside out, upside down & backwards lol. It's years since I listened to it, but it all came rushing back very quickly. It's magnificent.

Many many Thanks Ariel for this magical and nice interpretation. The Last Beethoven, the start of his majesty, music about music, music on the edge, touching the limits. Imposible to force the music more. Finally, here the music seems a picture. Colors all around the world. Freedom and Joy bless you Ariel.

Listening to these wonderful (recorded) performances makes me realise why I fell in love with these quartets (and the late piano sonatas) in my late teens. In those times we had only the radio, not even FM; I lived in a remote village on the UK coast. These recordings are superb and the reverberation times of the hall are perfect for your sound (That might be different for you of course). I live with the hope that you might come to the Netherlands and I can hear you rather than the electronics, however good these are. I realise of course that those performances, if they occur, would be quite different nearly ten years later than this recording. It is also good to watch your communication, always expressive of absorption with the music.

Beautiful! Fun fact: Mahler lovingly gave a nod to Beethoven by borrowing the theme from the slow movement here (III Lento assai..., at about 11:00 into the video) for the sixth movement of his 3rd Symphony. Emphasis on the word 'lovingly'.

What a nice, lively sound they're making! I don't know if it's that cello, or the way it's mic-ed, but I love the depth & tone of the bass notes - which are in no way over-prominent, nor boomy; they're just very present and sonorous.

One of the members of my string quartet described the Vivace movement as "unsafe at any speed" because of the crazy syncopation and other "simple" (crazy hard) rhythmic issues.

All music is composed before it is heard, so the fact that Beethoven couldn't hear when he composed this was probably not a handicap.

In this and the Op. 95, Gershon Gerchikov plays first violin while Alexandra Kazovsky plays other first violin. But in the Op. 132, she plays first and he plays other first. Is there some kind of system at work? It seems to work either way.

A good quarter. They still need to reach "consensus" as to be able to play four different voices having an equally important conversation. First violin sometimes wants to play louder than the other members. I think the cellist is the one who exhibits the best musicianship. I have no doubt they have the potential to become a great quarter-- something close to lets say the Guarneri String Quartet?

@@nihilistlemon1995 That's no answer. Having "paid for the service" doesn't give you the right to come and spoil the others' listening spitting and tossing your bateria around at 110 dB. It just gives you the right to attend quiet and respectful in the utmost silence to the artists' performance. Why not then fart to your ass' content, why not then also burp as loud as your stomach needs, why not then fall asleep and snort like a raging bull? Why not crunch popcorn in between the soloist's notes? Barbarians ...A music hall is not a toilet!

@@alexestrella7103 Ok, so what? I myself am very, very old and have learned to feel when I can't control when I cough.
