THIS! All that buildup for what? “accidentally” starting a fire that you ran from for safety that may have “accidentally” hurt another child while you were also a child 10 years ago… are you for real? Why are these two girls so dramatic about the silliest things? And what’s up with Kayla and her hot and cold personality with Esme. Are they really best friends because the things they say to each other makes me think they hate each other. Except the last couple of chapters the entire book is just: a childhood secret, a couple of dead deers and creepy msgs, a couple other lying counselors, and whole lot of of blabbering in Esme’s head. And the last chapter, oh all your friends are dead and you’re going to jail. Frustrating

I completely agree. The ending/"plot twist" was very disappointing and unsatisfying.

I just heard that Shelley Duvall passed away. She was Wendy in Kubrick's version of The Shining.

More than likely you saw exactly what you know you saw. I grew up in the woods of northern Minnesota and those big hairy people were pretty much everywhere and seen regularly but as children, we were not allowed to tell people anything because it might bring the wrong kind of people around.

I just finished reading this book and while I loved the literary aspects of it, I was shocked to find out later the glaring historical inaccuracies in this. Such creative liberties puts readers and history into a pickle, doesn't it? 😃

Is it really still winter up there? It's been (eh) up and down here, but mostly edging warmer. We actually had some hale yesterday.

You are a lot like me in my younger days. Pre-internet, I couldn't calculate the hours and combined days/weeks/months/years I would spend in record and CD stores. And maybe at the expense of an actual life, I made time to listen (at least once) to most of my purchases, because I am an *audiophile* and because I thought it would help to inform my dreamed musical career. Now, in the pandemic era, the dream is somewhere in the bottom of earth's great nautilus, boxes of records and CDs are weighing and costing me down, especially whenever I have to move, and now there's the advent of music streaming, which is a blessing and a curse coming from the era when curated listening and presentation actually mattered. Now I have algorithms and lots of heavy boxes, plus all the time in the world but, thanks to depression, no desire to do anything about it.

Old braille books also have a unique smell that I grew to like. One place I remember finding a lot of them was at that VT camp I visited as a kid (where the turtle bit me).
