Hi, I have some questions regarding charging the Fiat 500e modules. I have 4 6-S modules that I want to turn into 2 48 volt battery banks for a sailboat. What BMS would you recommend and how do I connect the BMS to the batteries? I am a novice when it comes to lithium batteries and electricity.

This is my first video of yours I’ve ever watched. Very interesting setup with breakers and fuses powering this mighty charger from a hidden battery source. I assume either you live off-grid or this is in a trailer. I’ll have to watch more videos to find out :) You might know this by now…. I’m on my second 4010 Duo charger so I personally addressed this years ago…. But the charge leads they included (the ones I assume you modified in this video) have “spring cage” 4mm bullets to plug into the charger. That was the hottest temp reading you got on the output. You should change these over to “solid” bullets (I don’t know what they are called, but similar to what’s inside your XT150 connectors). I just ordered 20 more from China for maybe $12, or you can get 4 from your local hobby shop for $5-8. The 4mm spring cage bullets are not rated to carry anywhere near the current you were pushing through them in this video. Stay supercool

Did Battery Hookup have any kind of guarantee on capacity? I just bought a 12S8P module off Ebay....I don't think its the same as this but I could be wrong and there could be 8P and 4P modules? Anyways the seller says tests show 90%-95% capacity and he's guaranteeing 90%...I'm very skeptical. Edit; my bad you have 12S8P modules too. Yours just have the M1A cells and the one I got is M1B so here's to hoping that the newer cell means a module thats not as old.

I've only recently bought an X12. Always learning. I guess one question is why these are deemed as BAE Systems (British Aerospace) when I doubt they are UK cells. Guess the original application? Couple of questions here. First off you seem like your very knowledgeable in what you do and thanks for the detailed video. The only 2 questions I have after watching are……. First what are the batteries for ? Second what’s is all the circuit breakers and other stuff on the wall for. I use regenerative discharge every so often and not the sharpest when it comes to understanding it all. I just hook up the 2 batteries, set values, and let it do its thing. Am I doing something wrong ? Thanks in advance for taking the time to respond.

@BATTERY73

The purpose of this setup is to capacity test batteries. The configuration allows me to do this very quickly, and without wasting power since I am moving power between two batteries, while metering the capacity. If not for this config, it would take significantly longer using the chargers internal load… appropriately take 10 times longer. Internal max load is 200 watts, vs 2000 watts in regen with the channels combined.

These are good cells if you can find some that are not so beat up and towards the end of its life. If you need 12v compatible LiFePO4 I would just buy new prismatic cells, Will Prowse on KZbin has a great channel. I generally build 24v and 48v setups and use a more energy dense lithium ion cell and usually source from EV cars. Deals change all the time based on availability. I have other videos about my Samsung SDI cells from a Fiat 500e if you want to check them out.

Heh, never thought I'd see a TS-100 soldering so much cable together, must have taken some patience. I only operate mine at ~17-20V from a 5s pack so I guess I'm not getting the full 60W, but still seems like it'd barely be capable of that.

jkenny1 I should have included a real time video of the 8 awg... it only took about 5 second of heating and it started accepting solder and was fully saturated within about 10 seconds. I use the largest tip they offer at 24 volts. 6s pack charged to 4.0v per cell. Give it another shot at full power, it continues to impress me a lot. Soldering the two 12 to the 8 took about 30-40 seconds, that was a lot of mass.

@BATTERY73
@BATTERY73 4 жыл бұрын
The shunt trip is a breaker, and it would be a good idea to have one that is appropriately sized for the battery bank. it would still provide over current protection even if Batrium was to fail. Contactor could be useful to shut off a load, and it could also turn it back on. it’s all in how you decide to design your system. Lots of valid ways of going about it.

Not sure. Certainly less than in a stationary power storage system which had a much lower discharge current, and is my main focus. if your loads are somewhat close to OEM then you could perhaps assume similar life to what the manufacturer estimate for their production vehicle. I too am limiting my max charge voltage to about 4.1 per cell and no more than 70-75% DoD.

Works good on low voltage now this may sound like a dumb question but does it work for any other voltages in other words is it multi-functional. Your system is awesome.
@BATTERY73
@BATTERY73 5 жыл бұрын
Not quite sure I understand the question… If you are referring the LVD PCB, it is setup for 24VDC voltage range only. The shunt control coil is 24VDC/VAC, but other options can be had. The battery/system voltage can be different than the control, meaning the breaker itself is rated for 500VDC. I could easily re-purpose many of these components for a system that has a much higher voltage.

@@BATTERY73 Thanks I understand the low voltage set for the trip what I was wondering can it have a high trip or do 2 programmable functions held in memory say if the Hz was too high could it shut down
@BATTERY73
@BATTERY73 5 жыл бұрын
@@offgridwanabe Absolutely possible… but not as configured in Part 3. I could add an over charge protection relay in addition to the LVD. At this point the LVD is an interim solution to protect against over discharge in case I forget to turn something off. Eventually I will replace the LVD with something a bit more robust which will allow me the trigger the shunt trip across a multitude of different fault conditions. The control system could really be anything, as long as you can control a relay with it.
