I read about the living conditions on Tarawa in the 90s in J. Maarten Troost’s book, and evidently a lot has changed in thirty years. Very few people where I’m from (California) have even heard of Kiribati, which is a shame because it’s gorgeous. Even fewer people can say it right. Maybe one day I’ll get to visit.

Always a pleasure to watch your videos. You live in a beautiful place. Even the dogs and Turbo the cat lives in harmony. My question is how high is your house above sea level? I read a lot of things in the news about Kiribati and climate change like rising sea levels. Anyway stay safe and prepare nice food. My flight is due to land in 24 hours🤣.

So, you rely in your government for food and housing? How do you have income? Are there jobs?
@temwaiku19 күн бұрын
@@PURE.EVIL. Hello. Until recently, there was no social benefit. Family members help each other. Other than government jobs, seasonal work overseas is also the main source of income. Additionally, fishing and copra production are another source of income. Government housing is restricted to government employees who often reside with their extended families.

I found this video after discovering that Google Earth doesn't have any street level views in Kiribati, which seemed odd. It may be the most populated place on Earth where Google hasn't sent their camera cars. Love the video, such a laid back place. I had to wonder if there are many immigrants living there. It seems like it might be a good place to retire. It would take me quite a while to get used to driving on the left side of the road. Being on the equator, is it hot year around, or does the ocean keep it comfortable? At least you don't have to worry about typhoons. What direction does water circle going down the toilet? :-p Are mosquitoes a big problem? I bet it's not hard to find a night sky without much light pollution.
@temwaiku25 күн бұрын
@@Vector_Ze Greetings. Thank you for your comment. I think the lack of street addresses might be why Goggle Earth isn’t useful in Kiribati. The immigrants are mostly Chinese entrepreneurs, while the retirees tend to be spouses of Kiribati nationals. I’m not sure which direction the water flows, but it appears to drain straight down. While there are mosquitoes, they aren’t bad. The temperature averages 28 degrees, with a constant cool ocean breeze. And yes, the clear nights are beautiful to watch. Cheers
