You're ignoring the obvious: irrigation. Besides over- or under-feeding the trees with fertilizer, under- or over-watering is (in my experience, at least in my area) the primary reason for fruit-drop. Here in Southern California, it's usually pretty dry, so the trees need significant irrigation. As water becomes more expensive, growers are less and less likely to give their avocado trees sufficient water, resulting in significant loss of fruiting. The easiest solution to this problem is mulch---LOTS of mulch. 60% of an avocado tree's roots are in the top 6 inches and 90% are within the top 12 inches---ergo, these roots can dry out quickly in hot weather. Put a good quality mulch around the base of the trees at least out to the dripline (but not within one foot of the trunk---that should remain bare). I recommend a mulch that can breathe (not too densely packed) but quite thick, several inches. Hope this helps.
