Not sure if you have tested it but a Royalex canoe doesn't need flotation, its a foam core- composite sandwich that can float even when totally filled with water. I have a 18ft Easy Rider Royalex canoe and we have done it a few times just for fun.
@atclark35636 ай бұрын
@@bcary461 I figured with the added weight (although not a lot really) the extra flotation would help if I capsized. Even without the sail rig, it floated higher when we were practicing capsizing for the canoe merit badge.

How do you tell the age I have a yellow one that’s in immaculate condidition it needs cleaned up I’m going to try to sell it but I don’t know what it will go for
@atclark35637 ай бұрын
On the back of the boat is the HIN number. It's probably on the right, a metal plate, or it could be embedded in the fiberglass. The last 4 digits is its manufactured date. Like 0774. Unfortunately I have no idea about prices. I searched thru marketplace etc and guessed when I sold my previous boat.

I run the main sheet around a bar on the boat winch and back to the cockpit. As I walk the mast up, I pull on the main sheet to raise the mast. Once fully up, I pull on the sheet and lean on the mast while the wife puts the front shroud clevis in the middle hole in the fitting.

I'm in Central Kentucky. I have added a simple boom topping lift. That really helps with raising the sail.
@olives48872 жыл бұрын
I have the Spinnaker option, so more lines in the cockpit can be a mess. Looks like a Lido sail as far as I can tell. If you have any questions, I can video my boats for specific details. I'll study the mast stepping. I step the other way but want to learn stepping with the shrouds attached.
@olives48872 жыл бұрын
Yes, the boom gets caught on the traveller. I put mine on the gunnels. Lots of snags with the little boat.
@markkromer12382 жыл бұрын
So instead of a keel you use an outrigger. correct?
@atclark35632 жыл бұрын
I have leeboards on each side, that stay down via rope pulling back to a clear with a short length of bungee. Since it's a narrow hull, I do scoot my butt from side to side and lean out if it gets to scary.

How is it that you can sail on a reach and not capsize? Or did I miss the outriggers?
@atclark35632 жыл бұрын
I've been toying with outriggers, but have not come up with a diy solution that I like. Sailing on a reach, the good wind is fun/ scary. I'm usually leaning as far over the gunnel as I can.

This is so much fun. I loved the tilt up rudder! Batwing sail is classic too.
@garyfrank15213 жыл бұрын
Great job. There are few things more fun than making something on the cheap. I did a similar sailing canoe from a Coleman square sterned canoe which enabled me to fasten a real rudder. I once took it out in 30 mph winds on a close reach. Coming back, I was surfing over waves. I was in my forties, and old enough to know better. Foolish, but it sure was fun. Canoes are one of the oldest, prettiest, and under rated boats in the world. I find traditional American wood-canvas canoes, proas, and skin on frame canoes fascinating.

That's a very weird video. Why weren't you grabbing or picking something up from the ground, instead of grabbing at a fence? Anyway, not a bad idea! You just need more captions to explain what you were actually doing. Would make a good grabber for citrus fruit high up in the tree, as they don't get bothered by bruising if picked with something like that that grabs well. I might just make one the same!
@atclark35634 жыл бұрын
Good points, it was a quickly put together video. I made the grabber to reach trash and stuff when I go canoeing. Every year our local lake has a shoreline cleanup. This year I went in my canoe.

I am going to "steal" some of your ideas. I was thinking of doing the same thing, making a sail out of a shower curtain. How did the shower curtain work out for you?
@atclark35636 жыл бұрын
deltafour1212 The nylon shower curtain flys really well, but I'm not much of a tailor, so the edging tape is glued on and a little stiff.
