Great job. There are few things more fun than making something on the cheap. I did a similar sailing canoe from a Coleman square sterned canoe which enabled me to fasten a real rudder. I once took it out in 30 mph winds on a close reach. Coming back, I was surfing over waves. I was in my forties, and old enough to know better. Foolish, but it sure was fun. Canoes are one of the oldest, prettiest, and under rated boats in the world. I find traditional American wood-canvas canoes, proas, and skin on frame canoes fascinating.

Wow, 30mph is crazy fast winds. Too scary for my blood. Way to go!

This is so much fun. I loved the tilt up rudder! Batwing sail is classic too.

Not sure if you have tested it but a Royalex canoe doesn't need flotation, its a foam core- composite sandwich that can float even when totally filled with water. I have a 18ft Easy Rider Royalex canoe and we have done it a few times just for fun.

@@bcary461 I figured with the added weight (although not a lot really) the extra flotation would help if I capsized. Even without the sail rig, it floated higher when we were practicing capsizing for the canoe merit badge.

Great Project I have the 5 hour canoe sail rig book always wanted to try it out i have build a few plywood dinghy boats that i also experimented on with different rigs High five to ya

Tinkering is almost as fun as sailing. The 5 hour canoe sail rig makes a fun build and sails pretty well.

Very cool. I'm thinking about doing a tinker boat too. you have some great ideas.. I'm live in FL and thinking about using bamboo for the mast ..it grows all around here.

Nice! If you ever want to put an outrigger kit on it, check out Expandacraft modular boats.

How is it that you can sail on a reach and not capsize? Or did I miss the outriggers?
@atclark35632 жыл бұрын
I've been toying with outriggers, but have not come up with a diy solution that I like. Sailing on a reach, the good wind is fun/ scary. I'm usually leaning as far over the gunnel as I can.

pretty good, actually! :) A+

I am going to "steal" some of your ideas. I was thinking of doing the same thing, making a sail out of a shower curtain. How did the shower curtain work out for you?
@atclark35636 жыл бұрын
deltafour1212 The nylon shower curtain flys really well, but I'm not much of a tailor, so the edging tape is glued on and a little stiff.
@deltafour12126 жыл бұрын
I knew they would work. We talking those $10 cloth Walmart shower curtains?

So instead of a keel you use an outrigger. correct?

I have leeboards on each side, that stay down via rope pulling back to a clear with a short length of bungee. Since it's a narrow hull, I do scoot my butt from side to side and lean out if it gets to scary.

beautiful. do more with less....you are an inspiration. all you ( need ? ) now is some oarlock outriggers and 7 ft oars.
