Hardly legends, they're quite recent (excluding Warren). A legend is not born in the spotlight but carved by time, as their artistry grows in stature and meaning beyond their era.

One thing I love about these baritones is the tempo. Bastianini and Herlea were excellent at this.

Thankyou for your great observations as to what makes these voices special in their own ways. I think with Pavarotti, his delivery was able to be in total synergy with narrative and lyrical content. Much like Sinatra, he really animates the message and invites us to experience what the song is truly about. I believe everything that comes out of his mouth. In terms of his tone, I swear I experience a form of synaesthesia when he does certain things. For example in O Sole Mio when he famously extended and embellished the second syllable: "Ma n’a(tu sole...)" at The Three Tenors Concert, I actually felt on my skin that sensation when a cold breeze is replaced with a warm flow of air, and I could almost see an angry, despondent, and overcast sky start to break apart as new, brave, life-bringing sunbeams burst through the gloom. I can almost see it as a heads-up display. It's just magical that another person's biology can engender these incredible effects in another.

That is hilarious. Of course memorize the libretto and also check diction, learn notes, workout phrasing, stress because the voice is a little tired, hydrate, exercise, eat well, get enough sleep in a strange hotel, learn the staging, adjust to an awkward costume, work with the conductor, warm up, be nice to the soprano, eccetera, eccetera….and be excellent in opening night after doing the pre-opera meet and greet.

You need to CLARIFY if you are talking about Opera OR about Pop/Rock because Opera is a DIFFERENT art form and those people use their voices DIFFERENTLY. It's neither better nor worse, it is simply DIFFERENT. Almost every person I know generally HATES the sound of Opera Voices, especially the females. They say it sounds unnatural & pretentious. However, I say it is simply a different art form.

Beautiful voice. Fantastic musicality and legato. Tempo too slow but elegant. Great high notes. But...even though can be arguable, I hear a tenorial voice (not clearly a tenor, of course). The voice has resonance , but no "meet". That said, he could and is doing a carrier as a baritone, and rightful too.

I wouldn't say his voice is completely constricted. The issue is really the over abundance of nasality. I think he probably mistakes this nasality with that Italianate baritone "snarl" that you hear in the great Verdi baritones of old, like Bastianini, Merrill, Taddei etc. The main difference between the "snarl" and this nasal sound is the the origin of the tone. The aforementioned baritones always originated the tone in the throat. That's why it sounds so full and powerful. This singer originates the tone in the "mask" or in many cases, directly in the nose. It's interesting how this style of singing has become so prevalent in this repertoire. Especially since singers that established their careers in Mozart, French and other light repertoire, like Thomas Hampson and Simon Keenlyside started singing the great Verdi baritone roles. Age is much less a factor in repertoire selection than your natural endowments. Singers like this one can certainly sing this repertoire but he will never sing it well. How do we know this? When we listen to the baritones like Merrill we have to remind ourselves that they sang this repertoire with Toscanini who knew Verdi! They know how to sing it because they are the singers who worked with the great maestri like Toscanini and Seraphin who knew Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni etc.!

When you say over abundance of nasality, what exactly do you mean? When I listen to Lucas, I hear bright baritonal voice that sings efficiently, and does a great job with one of the most difficult arias in all of baritone repertoire, I don't hear someone overdoing nasality. Even if he did go to muvh towards nasality, which i don't really think he does, that would help close the vocal chink (the little space most people have at the top of their vocal folds, preventing full vocal fold closure) Which is a trade off singers have to do when singing in the larger opera houses. Like, I'm not saying you're objectively wrong, but I'd like for you to elaborate on what you take issue with. I personally take issue with the idea that everyone singing verdi must sound like a bass with a high extension, or that singers like Pavarotti or Björling shouldn't sing arias such as nessun dorma cus it's meant for tenors with baritonal qualities to their voices. If you sing it well and it sounds good, great. Give us some variety, don't try to carbon copy the same exact thing 100% of the time, cus it's never gonna be exactly what you have in mind either way, and nothing's worse than being *so close, but a bit off* it just sounds weird when that happens

I love Lucas's voice, but I understand where you're coming from. To your point, "It's interesting how this style of singing has become so prevalent in this repertoire. Especially since singers that established their careers in Mozart, French, like Thomas Hapsom and Simon Keenlyside started singing the great Verdi baritone roles." The next point, "Age is much less a factor in repertoire selection than you'r natural endowments." I've always thought this when I heard Hampson or Keenlyside, who are both great singers, make their foray into Verdi. Just because you got older doesn't automatically mean you should sing it. Your voice may still not be great for it. You also see this recently with someone like Etienne Dupuis as well. Who is a FANTASTIC singer, but seemed to recently get into the heavier Verdi as of late. That being said, Lucas is a wonderful artist, who will continue to tweak and tailor his sound to this new fach. The improvement from the Il balen 8 months ago to now is astounding. And that one was also really really good!

You are absolutely right, this is a terrible nasal singing technique. In the opera, the standard of sounding a technical voice has disappeared, but microphones have appeared. Without preserving traditions, any art dies.
