There was no syro Malabar church in Kerala before portugese arrival. There were only malankara Christians or St. Thomas Christians. When portugese brought the Catholic version in Kerala some of the malankara Christians joined their Catholic version on compulsion and thereafter they were called the syro Malabar Christians.
