My dad bought one of these in 1954 reg. CUD12 (it was also a 1947 car ) for £325 IIRC, kept it for 3 years during which time a new engine had to be fitted. Btw, are trafficator arms still legal, or do you have to have flashers as well? 50+ years ago I ran into the back of an old Austin that turned left suddenly - I hadn't noticed his trafficator arm out...

Trafficators are still perfectly legal, as is the lack of seat belts However, in this case, indicators have also been subtly fitted underneath the bumpers (as may be seen in the thumbnail)

What a lovely car! Nice to get to witness the very precise-acting trafficators, as well. I remember how on some cars those would often get slower and slower to operate until they would at best droop out of the B post reluctantly with a very dim orange glow to show you were about to turn. Also that great sound of the straight-toothed first gear. But no double de-clutching necessary as synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
@emmo999
@emmo999 2 күн бұрын
You got it! Obviously, the trafficators have (along with everything else) had a full restoration, so work as they were new (or even probably better!). You’re bang on with the gearbox. First gear is only easily obtained whilst stationary, and gives off a lovely whine. The other gears, all have synchro

Makes me wonder how they coped with semaphore signals at night? I imagine that colour light signals are easier to see at night than at daytime, except, perhaps, when the line is close to a residential street, and the street lighting can look like yellows?
@emmo999
@emmo999 3 күн бұрын
When there are semaphore signals, there are also colour lenses with lamps behind. They are much dimmer than modern lights, but allowed drivers to see semaphores at night. If you google an image search of semaphore signals, you’ll see what I mean

Just as the train pulls out of Waterloo East, on the left you can make out the old branch line that used to go into Waterloo station. Those who read ‘War of the Worlds’ will recall this being reopened to allow troop movements to fight the Martians.

Yes, the LSWR wanted a route into the city, and trains ran to Cannon Street. Operationally, it was a headache, and was removed very early in the 20th century, replaced effectively by the Waterloo & City line, which was built by the LSWR and BR owned until 1994

Fun fact: This line runs extremely close the Caterham line for a short stretch after Riddlesdown Tunnel (which is something I only realised not too long ago)! Upper Warlingham and Whyteleafe Stations are within line of sight of one another and are served by the same bus stop!
@emmo999

Yes. Upper Warlingham to Whyteleafe is classed by TfL as an “out of station interchange”, which means pay as you go travellers can change between trains (and stations) there and only be charged for one journey.

Many thanks for an interesting video. Between Bromley South and Bickley you passed very close to the two houses where I grew up in the 60s - 70s (the days of beloved EPBs and other slam-door stock 💚 ). One thing I can't quite make out: are the AWS beeps different, depending on the signal aspect?
@emmo999
@emmo999 10 күн бұрын
I grew up in that area too, in the 80s - Pembroke Road There are two AWS indications - bell and horn. Nowadays they’re electronically generated noises but used to be the real thing. The bell (nowadays a ping) tells you the next signal is green. The horn (nowadays a buzzer) tells you the next signal is NOT green ie yellow or red, but not specifics. If you hear the horn, it must be acknowledged within 2.2 seconds, otherwise the train assumes the driver is incapacitated and applied the emergency brakes

At Dormans there is a differential speed board 40 over 65. Was that simply to regulate the freight movements clearing the Imberhorne landfill site for the Bluebell? I can't imagine there would be any other freight traffic to or beyond East Grinstead, so is it now just a relic of that period of intense working?
@LUAu101

"If there is a differential permissible speed, or a differential temporary or emergency speed restriction, the higher speed applies to passenger, parcels and postal trains (loaded or empty) and light locomotives. The lower speed applies to all other trains." All other trains doesn't necessarily mean literal freight trains, it can also apply to say tampers, rail grinding trains in transit, all sorts

Right from the first second, memory jumps out at me. 1958 I think it was, making my usual trek from the station down the road to the left of shot towards Cherry Orchard Road to my gran's house in Ovel Road. Looking to my left down into the country end of platform 6, there was a Black Five simmering at the starting signal, probably with an inter-region excursion to the south coast - although at that time I would not have known this at the ripe old age of eleven...strangely enough, thinking about that event and bearing in mind the route your train is about to take, I realised that, despite my life long love affair with Southern electrics and railways in general, I only ever three times ventured south of East Croydon. Once on a weekend 8-SUB excursion to Brighton with my gran. Once to Horley with my parents to visit my older brother who was then living in a home for the intellectually handicapped near Gatwick. And once when I fell into an alcohol-induced sleep on the last semi-fast service of the day, missed my East Croydon and eventually woke up as the train pulled into Brighton!
