Well now I'm confused because someone else with a KZbin channel explained the definition of slash chords differently. He said the note to the right is what u play with ur left hand as a bass note. Somebody is right and somebody is left. . . I mean wrong 🤔
@GailiSchoen-r3c6 күн бұрын
If you’re playing just an accompaniment you can play the chord in your right hand and the bass notes in your left. But if you’re playing a melody in your right hand, you play the whole chord in your left hand making sure that the note to the right of the slash is at the bottom of the chord.

@GailiSchoen-r3c Oh, I see. 😁🙏🏽
@flojomax793310 күн бұрын
Why are you using your left hand?
@GailiSchoen-r3c10 күн бұрын
Generally beginners play melodies in the right hand and chords in the left hand. More advanced pianists spread the chords between the two hands.
@Keeferz4Keeperz14 күн бұрын
Typically these type of chords are used in a lot of contemporary styles...in that case youre playing the chord in right hand (choose any inversion youd like)..but put the note to right of slash line in your left hand bass...its a bit more confusing when video presents chord in left hand ..which isnt how contemporary styles are played

Yes I agree, this would be very confusing for beginners. But I think once you know all your triads - major, minor, augmented and diminished - you might want to learn 7th chords, so that you can play songs in the Easy Fake Book series. You can find the Easy Fake Books here: www.upperhandspiano.com/resources

I thought that slash chords had a different meaning. The letter to the left signifies the chord regardless of the inversion and the right letter signifies the bass note.

Yes that is the meaning - the letter to the left of the slash does signify the chord, and the letter to the right of the slash is the bottom note of the chord.

@UpperHandsPiano3 ай бұрын
Hi Sandy! Thanks for asking! I have not planned a fifth book, but if I did I would be focusing on things like this - slash chords, and getting stronger and clearer about chords in general. Instead of writing another book my intention is to post these lessons on my blog with these KZbin video demonstrations. The books are expensive to produce and not many students make it to BOOK 4 without a teacher, so I figure that people will get further instruction from their teachers. If you are subscribed to my blog and this KZbin channel you will get word. I'll continue to post every month. Hope you find the continued lessons helpful! -Gaili

Does this mean that "slash chord" means to use a particular inversion of the chord?
@GailiSchoen-r3c4 ай бұрын
Usually but not always. If the note at the bottom is in the chord then yes. But as I showed in the 2nd row, sometimes the note to the right of the slash is not in the chord. In that case, you just add it to the bottom of the chord.

Yes, very true. You would need a good understanding of the triads in root position before inverting them (to slash chords), but you're so right, slow practice is the way to learn!! Thanks for your comment Shar 💙

Yes, if the letter to the right of the slash is not in the chord, it gets very confusing. You just have to think of it as an added note below the triad.

@UpperHandsPiano6 ай бұрын
Hi Len! The term is Fake Books. They are books that don't have a written bass line, but just chord symbols written above the melody that your left hand can play. These chords are standard chords, nothing fake or altered about them. All that is "FAKE" about a fake book is that there is no bass staff. Hope that is clear?! Thanks for your comment :) Have a great summer!

Hi Gaili, I am really enjoying and learning From UHP Book 1. I recently saw a video where you talked about Fake Books. I am using the one you talked about . First Fake Book is lovely and while I have been playing quite a few of the pieces, since doing UHPbook 1, I am trying to incorporate the chords but of course, I don’t know all the chords. You mentioned that you try to keep 3 note chords. How would I choose which 3 to use. Pg 26, Bye Bye Love has a 4 chord G7 so which letter in that chord could I leave out. ?? I have to constantly be counting as if not, I go too fast. I find this challenging.On page 5, Ain’t misbehaving, there is a C# dim. Which I looked up but not sure which are the correct notes. ?? I seem to have 2 versions. The other one I love is pg 10- Alley cat song.Timing is difficult for me and so I am still plugging my way though Book 1. I don’t not to rush to Book 2 yet. I am really enjoying playing the pieces in Your Book 1 but have trouble sometimes. Practice is essential. I am thinking of going to some lessons here because I find it hard to follow with you as I don’t know how to put my iPad so that I can play and listen to you. There is no space near the piano.. I have a detachable keyboard so maybe I can remove it nd put the monitor on the piano where the book goes but not sure how this ill work either. Sound confused don’t I?? Anyway a work in progress.
@UpperHandsPiano8 ай бұрын
Hi! You have a couple choices. If you want to play the chord as a 7th, play the G7 (bottom to top) G - B - F leaving out the D. The 5th of the chord is always expendable. Or you can leave off the 7th (the f) and just paly a G triad (G - B- D). See which you like the sound of better. Try counting sometimes, then other times try playing just using your ear to help you play the melody. Diminished chords mean that there are only 3 half steps between each note (I presented Dim chords in my Upper Hands Piano BOOK 1 in Exercise #3 and Chord Calisthenics 5 at the back of the book in the Appendices). For a C# dim play (Bottom to top) C# - E - G. That' s just a triad (a 3-note chord). But if you see a Dim7 chord that will be 4 notes, with 3 half steps in between. For C#Dim7 you would play C# - E - G - Bb. If you get a case for your iPad you can put it on your keyboard with it folded upright. Hope all this helps! Good luck!
