No i didn’t, coming up soon though. We do really need this in N.S. So many lots coming up that need the fir taken out first then leave it. No it is not a thing…. As of now anyway! We have a mill in Cape Breton a lot closer than that and they really aren’t interested. Supply and demand sort of thing…
@jasoncrouse4357 күн бұрын
This is why I left Nova Scotia along time ago it can’t get its head out of its ass. St. John is only 4 hours away. They have pulp mills that Irving ships to Maine. So why can’t Nova Scotia hop across the border to NB. The maritimes could produce so much. The port is right there also. There is always alternatives. I have land down there that I’m tempted to clear cut the whole thing and spit on it after I’m done. Make no wonder the youth leaves so they can prosper elsewhere.

I resigned myself to treating balsam fir as a weed. That's how it is now in NS. I cut all of them down wherever I'm working on my woodlot and leave any healthy hardwood and a few mature spruce for seed trees if they can handle the wind.

It is definitely a tree that is now a thing of the past.
@jonathansmith303113 күн бұрын
@thelankylogger Good for Christmas trees and that's about it. My land has a lot of clay in it, so it holds a lot of water. This increases the likelihood of rot and blowdowns to a tree inherently prone to both to begin with.
@thelankylogger13 күн бұрын
@@jonathansmith3031 ours as well. When I started cutting our land in the early 90’s the fir was in better shape then the spruce in places. But as our climate changed our fir will not grow to be 60 to 70 years old like it used too. So it’s time to get the next generation ready for that.
@jonathansmith303113 күн бұрын
@@thelankylogger My lot was mostly clearcut 45 - 50 years ago right about when I was born. Any fir that grew from that point is dead, dying or full of red rings. It's very rare to get anything out of it worth putting on my mill. I've only had the land four years, and every time I walk it I see wasted potential had it been managed correctly. As you already know, it makes a huge difference. I definitely don't do it for the money though. Lol

I have a 322 acre lot that I call a glorified hobby and a tax write off. I try to sell my junk softwood for firewood blocked split and delivered, but there isn't much money in it and to move any amount I have to undercut everyone else. I don't sell anything to Freemans anymore because their prices are unfair. I have a sawmill but it's no easy to do it all as one guy. You ending maintaining equipment more than you use it. I probably spend $500-$1000 a year just on batteries. Lol. Anyway, good to see local content. Liked and subbed.

I’ve decided not to compete with the Facebook marketplace guys around here, so my clientele is the recreational burner. I sell 1/4 and 1/3 cords, cut and split smaller and deliver in a 5x8 little dump trailer. I can charge close to double because of the custom sizing👍
@amandadavis97262 ай бұрын
You explained the exact reason as to why I don’t sell in bulk, lol. I sell bundles and 1/4 cords only. I had no desire to stack wood when I started selling. It is all split small, and advertised as recreational firewood. People do buy to heat their homes with,…but they have to pay the premium for. To answer your question,…I honestly don’t believe that there is a perfect trailer. The perfect trailer is the trailer that you have available to get that particular load delivered. Like you mentioned,…it may require having multiple trailers on hand. Then you have to consider where the customer wants the wood stacked 😁. I don’t mind stacking a 1/4 cord, as it doesn’t take long to do. A cord, or multiple cords is a whole other deal, 😂!! Even if paid for it, I still don’t like it.
@thelankylogger2 ай бұрын
I think you are right, there is no perfect trailer. Never big enough. Lol. Bundled wood is definitely something I would like to eventually get into! Thanks
@amandadavis97262 ай бұрын
@ Yep, I agree. Having one trailer ends up being too big, or too small, lol. It would be nice to loose toss every load. But it’s when you have a multi cord delivery. I don’t know how your market is, but I think you’d enjoy bundles. I only advertise through a couple of facebook marketplace ads. I do delivery only, with a minimum purchase of three. That way I’m not driving all over town for a single $10 bundle, lol. Let us know if you start to venture off into that part of the market.

I don't sell firewood personally, but there's a few contractors in the area ( Western Cape Breton) that do. They're all running single axle dump trucks for blocked and split and delivering 8ft lengths with tandem axle pulp trucks. There's a few guys here that still deliver 1/2 cord loads with pickups because trailers are too hard to get into most yards.

I used to have a 3 ton top kick gmc pre emission with a 16 ft dump body with 2x6 side racks and I could have 3 cord full to top with only the back tear piled in an the rest loose or a could do the 1 cord loads or 2 cord loads it was cheap to run . I would go with a 16 ft 5 wheel dump trailer myself It hauls easier being fifth wheel an once you learn how to back it up it will go any where just my thoughts 💭.cheers

Glad to have found your channel, lots of good info for someone trying to manage a woodlot in NS. We used to do something similar but with a tractor and power trailer. Only real difference is we'd pile the wood off to the sides of the trail so could get the trailer between the piles (we were loading by hand). We switched to using a yarding winch a couple decades ago. Leaving the trees full length and with 100 ft cable we don't need as many trails, don't have to move as much brush, and can reach trees in places that would be difficult to drive into. I'll have to look for a set of those log tongs, they look a safer than carrying a pulp hook around.
