So you used the old steering rack and shaft? I’m about to do this swap and had been told you have to swap them to ones from a V8 car.
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 2 күн бұрын
Yes I used the V6 rack and steering shaft. Here's the deal, the V8 rack and shaft are different from the V6 rack and shaft so if you're going to use a factory k member, you'll have to get a V8 rack and shaft as well. But they make aftermarket k-members for Ls V8 that use the V6 rack and shaft. So if you're going with an aftermarket k-member, you can keep your V6 rack and shaft, just make sure you order the right k member.

yes it did. and yes you're right, most 4x4 4l80's don't have the tone ring for the output speed sensor. I was going to say the exact same thing you did at the end. I'm not a fan of AMC (at all) but I can sure appreciate a car for what it is. Ya, those old square bodies had those 2 position carbs from factory, on and off! You just can't beat the sound of a SBC screaming for all she's worth. To this day, that sound gives me a ..... happy in the pants, shall we call it? My last square body was a 79 3/4 ton truck with about an 86 body on it. Rebuilt 350 sb out of a bus, and we put a cam in it from a camaro. Heads were off a 400 sb, and had been blueprinted, ported and polished. Everything under the body was new, but the body was rotten. It still looked amazing, but clearly getting rough. In fact, if you floored it around a corner, the tailgate would fall off LOL! I was up in the city one night, went to pick up a used snowblower (and something else) and was on my way home. Sitting at the lights next to a new Dodge pickup. I gave it a little extra gas off the line, since I hate sitting next to a dirty Dodge. I looked back to see where he was, and he was giving it trying to show me up...... so I FLOORED it! I BLEW HIM AWAY, with my body panels flappin' in the wind and everything. Fricken Dodge had no idea what happened! I laughed my arse off the entire drive home! Guy had a 50+ grand new truck, that he thought was hot S***, and got wasted by a rusted out 80's truck hauling a snowblower! I miss that truck every day :(

Nothing to them, so nothing that goes wrong that you couldn't fix on the side of the road with a few basic tools, mechanics wire and a hammer! GMT 800's are where it's at these days though. They're the modern day square bodies. That being said, if I can get my fingers on one, I'm definitely taking it. Hey, maybe it's time to revisit the turbo truck this winter eh?

I do much the same thing on my trucks but I do use fuel injection clamps for everything. Also I mount the cooler with the outlets up so the cooler stays full of ATF and reduces the speed through the core providing the maximum amount of cooling. A set of 90* fittings also cleans things up a little. Just me.
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 6 күн бұрын
Fuel injection clamps I wouldn't be opposed to, typically you can get them tighter than a worm screw clamp and they hold a bit better than a worm screw clamp. How does mounting the cooler with the outlets facing up reduce the speed of the fluid through the core? With the same volume of fluid being pumped in the same amount of time, mounting the core a different direction won't change the distance the fluid needs to travel, or the speed that it travels that distance.
@hardball107
@hardball107 6 күн бұрын
@@MohawkMotors With a really large cooler with tank and tube construction the flow from the trans might not be enough to fully use all the cores, it might only use the bottom half using only half the tubes or so. Mounting it so once it fills it will use all the tubes slowing the fluid flow through each because it would be using them all. You can see the effect by measuring the tube temps, the further away from the tank you are the cooler the tube is, the flow is the same but with that flow using all the tubes it's slower through each, given more time in the tube it produces cooler temps at the outlet. It's all about available GPM. Tough to explain but it works most times.
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 6 күн бұрын
I gotcha, I hadn't thought about that. Makes sense, would be curious to test idle vs. high rpm, like driving at highway speed. Higher rpm the pump would be moving substantially more fluid. This would also explain why the trans fluid usually drops a bit after a first test drive with some higher rpm, the increased fluid flow from high rpm fills more of the cooler that may not have filled at idle.
@lilpoindexter

you dont need the radiator cooler
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 6 күн бұрын
If there's any chance at all of being in stop and go traffic, or even just parked with the engine idling, you either need the primary cooler in the radiator, or you need a fan to move air over the auxiliary cooler. The way I have this system set up, if I bypassed the primary cooler in the radiator, I guarantee you the trans would burn up in stop and go traffic. Without air flowing over the auxiliary cooler it will get heat soaked and do pretty much nothing to cool the fluid in a very short amount of time.

Yeah if the overfill and point downhill trick didn't make it any better, next step is to pull the pan. If it's a high mileage engine it's very possible that it could be sludged up like this one was. The only other thing you could try is to drain the oil and poke something in through the drain hole, something like a metal coat hanger or piece of heavy gauge wire, and see if you can break up the sludge with the wire, then rinse it out with brake clean or gasoline or something.

Why does everyone tell me not to ls swap my 95 V6 3.4L ?? I want to do it so bad but haven't had one person tell me it's a good idea?
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 12 күн бұрын
People told me not to swap it either because "v8 cars are plentiful and cheap" so in their opinion it wasn't worth the effort and expense to swap a v6 car. However in my area to get an original V8 manual transmission car in the same condition and mileage as this one, would have cost me $9,000 to $11,000 depending on if I could get a good deal. I had less then $5,000 into this car by the time it was finished. I had more time available than money so it made sense to swap a V6 car. Depending on your skill level and what resources you have available, time, money, space, etc. you have to decide what's best for you. Ultimately, it's your car and your decision, if V8 swap is something you really want to do, don't let other people talk you out of it. 98% of the people that tell others they can't or shouldn't do something, are just projecting their own fears and inadequacies onto others so they don't feel worse about themselves when the people around them do awesome stuff.

Hey Jason great content and it’s helping me out a ton for my 78 k10 ls 6.0 swap! I’m in the area of the fuel system and had a question for you. I have both saddle tanks but my plan was to do a blazer tank. But after watching this i might just end up doing this for now. With this setup you’re working on, was this tank baffled and if not are you worried about running the pump dry? Do you mostly just do one tank for supply? With my setup I’m trying to get this running asap and maybe plan on doing the blazer tank later down the road. Thanks
@MohawkMotors
@MohawkMotors 12 күн бұрын
So using the factory tanks, only the 87 and later fuel injected trucks had baffles in the tank. If you're planning to use the truck for autocross or road course racing then I would absolutely recommend getting a baffled tank. For normal driving around, maybe a little drag racing here and there, even spirited driving on country roads, it's extremely unlikely you'll slosh fuel away from the pickup for long enough to ever have any issues. You'd have to be driving something like tail of the dragon with less than 1/4 tank of fuel before it ran the pump dry, even then I doubt it would. I've only ever done 1 tank for supply in my square body swaps, it reduces failure points (multiple pumps, multiple pickups, etc), it also reduces cost, and in everything I've done, there would really be no benefit to dual tanks. If you're doing something and you'll only have access to fuel every 500 or so miles, dual tanks makes sense, but in most parts of the US, you don't need to be hauling around 50+ gallons of fuel all the time, 20 ish gallons is enough to go 200+ miles which is plenty for cruising around and a little spirited driving.

Buy a crashed 06 or 07 classic truck with the engine you want that is the same drive as yours (2wd or 4wd) , either on marketplace or from insurance auction or wherever you can find it. The LQ9 would have had a 4l65 or 4l70 behind it from the factory so as long as it still have the original flexplate it will match your 4l60. If you're keeping the engine stock, the stock torque converter will be fine. If you're planning changes to the engine like a cam or power adder of some kind you'll need a converter to match it.

If you don't know a whole lot about the differences between the v6 and v8 cars or you don't have all the parts together, or your just not super mechanically inclined it could take months
